“just what we were after”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2011

stayed here on a girls weekend recently, we found the beds to be comfy and the staff helpful. we had good qulity tvs, nice refreshments and even a microwave in our 'louge' room. we had the top floor rooms which was more like having our own cosy appartment. the hotel seemed quiet although there were many other residents, so you wont get disterbed by other residents in the night. good value for money. all in all a good hotel, would stay again : )

“basic room, great just for sleeping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2011

This is an average hotel with basic facilities. There was no furniture in the room, except for the beds and 2 small shelves, one of which was taken up with the coffee tray. Meant all our stuff had to go on the floor. Addition of a chair to sit on would be great and table/desk as there is plenty of room for it. Ditto bathroom had no shelf. Staff very helpful with taxi numbers etc. Plenty of parking. Paid £75 each per night room only. Thought charging £4.95 extra for breakfast was a bit steep. Maybe due to it being a rugby weekend. If you want comfort go somewhere else. Very close to town centre and had free wi-fi.

“Great location, very clean and friendly, but very basic standard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2011

I just stayed in the Avala this weekend the 22nd May 2011 (Heineken Cup rugby weekend) so it was a very busy weekend in Cardiff. The Avala is in a superb location on Newport Rd, And area is very nice and quiet. Staff are very helpful and eager to provide information about the area. But there are 2 things I would take note of for people. The value for money for the price we paid (for the weekend that was in it) was very low value for money for 2 reasons. The rooms are very small and accomodation is fairly basic, they only switch your towels every 4 DAYS (which they dont tell you on arrival) which is very poor by regular standards given that you would typically expect changes to towels every day (and maybe bed linen every 3 days fair enough but not towels). Also, the breakfast is not included in the price. Which again is crazy. And not only that, but the breakfast is VERY BASIC - so i would warn anybody staying here, for the same price they charge you for breakfast (a fiver) you can get a Full English Brekkie down the road in town. So be warned. Great location, very clean and friendly, but basic.

“Not worth the money”

Me and my boyfriend came up to stay for the weekend for 2 nights with 2 of our friends. We were up on the 3rd floor and had lots of bags which we were not offered any help with. We had no view as it was the fire escape in our room which was awful as we could not even see out of the window as it was frosted or open it! it was a warm weekend and got very stuffy as we could not open any windows. Paint was peeling off the wall above the radiator, we had to kill a few bugs and spiders around the room, the towels were very rough and looked tatty, there was no chair at the dressing table which made it hard to get ready! No hairdryer. The shower was ok but not powetful atall. Heating goes off quite early and at night the room was freezing. The staff of the hotel were no where to be seen throughout our stay. The hotel was in a good location but thats about it!

“Never Again”

The room was clean, but painfully small.
It was a warm day so the room was very hot, but you could barely open the window as they decided it was a good idea to block window with headboard of bed!
The shower room had no door, so was practically in same room!!
The toilet was hidden in what looked like a cupboard.
The road its situated on is very busy so dont expect much sleep if you are a light sleeper.
They offered breakfast to us, croissants and cereal for just under a fiver??!!???
This hotel is fine if you dont mind travelling on buses, as there is nothing in this area to do.
The only upside was they had free wi fi!!!
