“A lovely weekend but.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I booked a two night stay with taster menu via a living social deal as a treat for my husband's birthday. We had difficulty getting through - no phone answer and no answer to our emails so we contacted the Cardiff Tourist Information Office. We had just about given up hope and were considering other options when the restaurant/hotel phoned us to confirm our booking. Apparently problems with phone lines and no one works on a Sunday or Monday. On arrival we were unable to find an easy way in, simple signage would have improved things enormously, but eventually we found an intercom and the proprietor (?) showed us to our room, a lovely big room which at first sight looked great. Not a great welcome but OK. The room could have done with a deep clean and was fousty smelling but was perfectly comfortable and attractive. The meal was served at 7.30pm and consisted of 7 courses. Friendly service in the bar but very inexperienced staff and a serious lack of drinks advertised on the wine list. First course was leek and potato soup - completely white and watery with lumps of leeks floating around! Not a good start, however things improved and 3 more starters appeared with one main course - all very good and well cooked, but a taster menu?? Finale was two very mediocre desserts. Three very good courses would have been a much better option as 7 courses felt a bit like a marathon. Had to ask about breakfast time which was 9.30 to 10.30am, rather late for a start to our day out, especially as all guests arrived at 9.30am to find a locked dining room! A very tired looking chef/proprietor(?) arrived a few minutes later and started to take orders. Very mediocre cereals on offer but a good cooked breakfast was served quite quickly. Location of this hotel is fantastic - you can visit the outdoor museum of St Fagan's which is on the doorstep and we caught a bus into Cardiff on the Saturday, spending a fabulous day exploring and eating in the city. We felt that the whole experience was good but could have been so much better with not a huge amount of effort. If we had paid full price in the restaurant, we would have been very disappointed but there were elements of very good cooking. At no point were we asked to give any feedback on our experience apart from the waiter asking if we enjoyed our meal, which we did in parts. Lack of attention to detail and inexperience is stopping this restaurant with rooms from being fantastic.

Room Tip: A small number of rooms but we believe from talking to others that all rooms are well sized. No inf...

“Really enjoyed our stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

This guest house and restaurant has been very tastefully refurbished. The room we stayed in was lovely, very big with a very comfortable bed. We bought a Groupon deal which was extremely good value for money! Although the 7 course "taster" was way too much food for me. I would have been happy to have stayed for the same money and not had the 7 courses. The breakfast and meal on the 2nd night were fantastic, very well presented and excellent food. The waitress was very friendly and helpful.

The location is great, St Fagans museum is well worth a visit and it is easy to get to Cardiff city and Cardiff bay.

On the down side we missed breakfast on the first day because we couldn't find any information in the room on breakfast times so we guessed and went just after 9, it was 8 - 9.00 a.m. The following day it was 9.00 - 10.00 which suited us better.

“Fantastic”

We bought a groupon deal which was extremely good value for money. Our room was lovely and really big, from reading previous reviews I think we ended up with one of the best rooms at the front. The owners were extremely accommodating and found us a room at the last minute, my husband who is in the navy only had a few days off before he had to sail again so we were very grateful they could find us a room at such short notice. The dinner that was included was very nice and the breakfast the following morning was fantastic. We will certainly be going back and have recommend to our friends and family.

“The No One Inn”

The Old Post Office looked suspiciously quiet when we arrived. And after trying both doors and circling the building several times the place was clearly empty. After waiting half an hour, checking the date and check-in time (both correct) my boyfriend tried phoning them. He looked at me, stony faced and said that there was a message on their answer machine saying they were on holiday and the place was closed. My response to this was to burst out laughing.

Another half an hour was spent sitting in the car, checking their website to contact the company we booked it through. The quick email response from the company was that The Old Post Office had had 3 months to cancel our booking and offer a refund. So there was no excuse for this poor service.

Unfortunately, all the other B&Bs in the area were fully booked. This did put a damper on our evening (we were going to see ‘The Comedy of Errors’ at St Fagans, which was apt in the circumstances). Thankfully we are only a 40 minute drive away, or it would have been a lot more serious. Also, as I’ve just survived cancer it puts dramas like this into perspective.

We got our money back quickly from the booking company. However there has been no apology from The Old Post Office, which I think is terrible. I thought I would give them a few months to contact us before posting a negative review. Judging by all the other poor comments this is clearly a business in trouble. My advice is that if you really must stay at this place ring them to confirm the booking first.

“Not disappointed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Having read many negative reviews on the Old Post Office we went for our Groupon with trepidation, we needn't have worried. It's important to be objective and given the price we paid we were not disappointed, sometimes you have to be realistic and having eaten in Mitchelin starred restaurants I like to think I'm a pretty good judge.

The service was slightly slow but considering a staff member was sick this was understandable, Debbie did an excellent job and kept smiling throughout the evening.

We were offered a full Welsh breakfast and cereal's by the chef. Having had a 7 course meal the previous night and breakfast we din't need to eat again until the evening.

Thank you for an enjoyable evening, you don't deserve all this negativity.
