I was looking for somewhere convenient on the outskirts of Cardiff for a business trip, so did not require anywhere particularly marvellous. Be prepared for the sign on a busy dual carriageway when approaching the location and then a country lane to the hotel itself. Very pretty in the daytime, but a bit daunting at night and in the rain.
I found St Mellons to be a pleasant surprise, with an impressive location and appearance from the outside, a very comfortable room with good amenities in the main hotel on the ground floor. The en-suite was clean and of a good standard.
The staff were friendly although they seemed a little disorganised. In the evening, the receptionist seemed to be covering the front desk, clearing tables, working behind the bar and serving food. There were not too many guests, but this would have a big impact on customer service if it was busier.
The lounge area was quiet and comfortable and with free WIFI. A criticism would be that the WIFI cannot be accessed in the rooms. The health club facilities looked to be of a good standard with a decent sized pool but I didnt have the time to make use of them; would recommend taking your swimsuit to make use of it.
Breakfast in the morning was a self serve arrangement, with the food being of a good standard and well cooked. Portions would be as generous as you feel necessary. There was a generous continental offering along with the usual Full English items, but I did not see if there were any other alternatives if you fancied something different.
Good value for what I paid and no complaints
