“Fab!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We booked a night’s stay in January for my sisters hen do. We stayed in the "Garden Rooms" (think that’s what they are called) and although a bit shabby from the outside, they were perfectly adequate inside. Very warm and clean. The food at dinner was amazing, as was the service. Drinks a little pricey though.

Breakfast was scrummy and although we had to wait for cooked items, it was worth it :0)
We spent the day in the spa area, treatments were divine, and lunch beautiful. The swimming pool area could do with a facelift, but the changing rooms were spotlessly clean.
I have given this a 5 star as all staff were so helpful, I especially loved the lucky black cat curled up near the roaring fire… well done all at St Mellons, I would definitely return.

“Good value for the business traveller”

I was looking for somewhere convenient on the outskirts of Cardiff for a business trip, so did not require anywhere particularly marvellous. Be prepared for the sign on a busy dual carriageway when approaching the location and then a country lane to the hotel itself. Very pretty in the daytime, but a bit daunting at night and in the rain.

I found St Mellons to be a pleasant surprise, with an impressive location and appearance from the outside, a very comfortable room with good amenities in the main hotel on the ground floor. The en-suite was clean and of a good standard.

The staff were friendly although they seemed a little disorganised. In the evening, the receptionist seemed to be covering the front desk, clearing tables, working behind the bar and serving food. There were not too many guests, but this would have a big impact on customer service if it was busier.

The lounge area was quiet and comfortable and with free WIFI. A criticism would be that the WIFI cannot be accessed in the rooms. The health club facilities looked to be of a good standard with a decent sized pool but I didnt have the time to make use of them; would recommend taking your swimsuit to make use of it.

Breakfast in the morning was a self serve arrangement, with the food being of a good standard and well cooked. Portions would be as generous as you feel necessary. There was a generous continental offering along with the usual Full English items, but I did not see if there were any other alternatives if you fancied something different.

Good value for what I paid and no complaints

Room Tip: The main hotel seems to be the better option than the garden rooms. Be at the front and away from th...

“Better than we expected”

We booked a weekend here because of the easy access to Cardiff but were a bit worried by some of the reviews. We had a ground floor room in the main building it was a good size and it and the en-suite were spotlessly clean if a little dated but in keeping with the style of the hotel. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant and a supper in the bar. Breakfast was the usual full English and cereals juice etc. Not exceptional but just fine, we couldn't manage lunch either day.
The only downside was the rather tired mattress.
The Cardiff East Park and Ride is a short drive away and takes you straight to the centre of Cardiff for just £3 ac car and includes all day parking.
The pool was lovely at 17 metres long enough for a decent swim. All the staff were friendly and hard working. So for about £45 a night we felt it was excellent value!

“No where near as bad as some of the reviews”

We went to the St Mellons hotel near Cardiff for a couple of nights for my wifes 50th Birthday. The hotel was pleasent and our room to be fair was quite nice, we were in the main building over looking the fountain. I have to say that the leisure facilities and bar area are very good. The only issue that we had was a poor nights sleep due to the radiator making rattling noises all night.

When we went down for breakfast I mentioned this to the receptionist who advised that she would get mainenance to check it out. Without going into detail my wife was extrealley upset and not having a good birthday and left in tears.( With the exeption of the radiaotor was not as a result of anything the hotel had done.

When we came back down stairs the receptionist offered to change our room for the bridal suite, but what was above and beyond that receptionist had gone to the trouble of buying my wife a birthday card and it was in the room for when we got back .

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building

“Poor experiance”

We booked a suite room for an overnight stay and was allocated a room in the "garden rooms"

The room was far from a suite and best described as a prefab large twin.

The decor was outdated and shabby and marly matched. The room was supposed to sleep four yet only had two single beds which were uncomfortable and small.

The breakfast was quite good and cooked to order but the service in the restaurant was poor as the waiter could barely speak English.

Had we paid the full price for the room we would have minded slot more. It would be better if the hotel stopped pretending to be something they are not.

In order to improve the hotel needs decorating to a consistent and tidy theme and prices to match.
