Another trip to Cardiff on business, and another four night stay at the Hilton in the town centre. There were a couple of minor problems on this trip, but in general this stay was a good experience.
On arrival the concierge helped get my bags out of the car, and reception soon had my preferred room type allocated (high floor, away from the lift). Room 502 had plenty of space and a great view out to the castle and Civic Centre. A few minutes after getting to the room my bags were delivered as requested.
A problem with the toilet flush mechanism was pretty obvious in the bathroom, as water was constantly trickling down the pan. Even after a flush this would keep happening. A call to maintenance had this fixed by the time I returned later that night, but why did housekeeping not notice when preparing the room - getting it right always beats putting it right, even if they do fix it quickly and efficiently.
One in-room meal during my stay was good, with my usual "add this, no that" requests met in full. The food was delivered hot and within 20 minutes of my order being placed, exactly as promised by the person taking my order.
Breakfast was taken each day and the range of options, both hot and cold, was good as expected. One disappointment was the lack of "Frosties" in the cereal section, they used to leave some boxes out in the kids section, but they had none out on this occasion.
One problem on the Thursday morning was the delivery of my hire car. I always use the valet parking at this hotel, as this is actually £1 cheaper per night than taking the car yourself to the nearby NCP car park. On arriving at reception for 9am, the time I had requested my car, there were several people hanging around and the valet park staff running about. Several guests were complaining that they had been waiting for over 20 minutes for their car. One chap was told they had no record of his Porsche being left with them, but they did find it eventually (he was a lot calmer than I may have been in those circumstances). The valet staff apologised and explained that they were several staff members down due to illness, but my car was delivered by 9:15, only slightly late and the staff were obviously running as fast as they could to catch up. All other days my car was waiting for me at the requested time.
On my last morning I decided to use the bath for the first time during this visit - I normally shower. The bathrooms at the Cardiff Hilton have large separate walk in showers which are great. There is a separate shower head as part of the tap assembly for use with the bath, but when I picked this up to rinse the shampoo out of my hair, the head came away from the hose, as the fitting was obviously broken, not just unscrewed. I reported this to reception at checkout, but again why was this not picked up by housekeeping prior to my arrival? All of the bath and shower products were replenished daily, but face flannels were a bit erratic - two on the first day, one only on the second, none on the 3rd, and back to two on the final day? My request for additional towels was met each day, as was my request for additional feather pillows on arrival.
All in all, a mostly good stay once again. The location of this hotel is great if you want to use the city centre facilities or need access for business purposes. I did not get the chance to use the hotel leisure facilities on this visit, but my experiences in the past have been good. I would say that the leisure facilities at the St David’s Hotel and spa in Cardiff Bay are better than here, but you are then some distance from the town centre – so take your choice of what works best for you.
My thanks to all of the staff who helped during this stay - I'll be back.
Room Tip: Ask for a high floor room with a view of the castle.
