“Clean, cold, good location for town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2011
1
person found this review helpful

I read a few of the recent negative reviews and decided to give it a go. Stayed for 2 nights on business. Here are the highlights!

1. Room was very cold first night. Asked for an electric heater second night and got one (although I think the only one). As it happens after I stayed the radiator got warmer. However, overall the house is cold (including dining room) and I wouldn't recommend it in very cold weather.

2. Service was generally ok and the young man who dies the breakfasts etc is very friendly and polite.

3. Breakfast ok

4. Location for town - good - 5 mins walk.

5. Good private parking although dark if you arrive late

6. Decor was average to good and room was clean. Also plenty of tea/coffee etc in room.

7. TV with all main channels

8. Shower worked well

All in all ok apart from the cold!

“Rude, reluctant owners”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2010

Unfortunately, a similar experience to that of our reviewers. While we found the b&b itself "acceptable" (we just needed a place to lay the head), the owners are quite indifferent, swinging between rude and conciliatory.

When we arrived we were shown to a bedroom that had just been decorated recently. The room was lovely, immaculate job, new carpets, lovely colours etc ... everything. But it had been done *so* recently that the room stank of paint fumes, those given off by the new wood gloss. We had to sleep with the window open, freezing.

The next morning, when we asked politely if we could change rooms, the lady of the house was very rude and initially refused to help, saying they were full (contrary to a sign on their door). A while later she miraculously found a free room we could move to. When we returned at the end of the day, there was a bottle of wine left for us in the room, we suspect from the man of the house.

While it was a nice closing gesture, the facts remain that they shouldn't have let out a room so intoxicated with paint fumes, and there was clearly no need to be so rude to us when we asked to be moved.

“Disappointing B&B - there must be better in Brecon”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

We were visiting Brecon for only one night and were recommended this place by some friends. However, it appears that they had a completely different experience.

From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel unwelcome. We had to ring the doorbell several times before being let in. It then took ages for anyone to turn up and, when she did, she complained that we'd interrupted her cup of tea and then proceeded to moan at us about how she was always rushed off her feet. We weren't even showed to our room - we were just pointed out the back door out towards the car park and the annexe. Before I'd even seen the room, I wanted to leave - first impressions are so important and the woman on reception made a very bad one.

The room (number 15, for the record) was a decent size, but tired and a bit tatty. There's an ancient little 14" TV which just about showed me Match of the Day on BBC1. The bathroom was freezing and rather grotty - the cleaner had just about managed the surfaces, but the walls/ceiling appeared damp and had odd marks. The shower was weak and took ages to heat up. There was a spare bed and futon. Sleep was intermittent - the bed wasn't particularly comfortable. The room was cold all night - my girlfriend had to get up in the night to fill her hot-water bottle.

Breakfast the following morning was a little bit of a farce - it took them almost 30 minutes to take our order, and the breakfast, when it arrived, was a disappointment. Advertised as the "Full Welsh Breakfast", I got an egg, a single sorry slice of bacon, a rather nasty sausage and lots of baked beans (I had declined tomato/mushroom.) Furthermore, they didn't have veggie sausages for my girlfriend, despite us having warned them when we booked.

Overall, we were disappointed and will, in all probability, try somewhere else next time. We do not recommend this hotel.

“Good location, noisy bed, not all breakfast items available, tired decor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

We booked this B&B based on their website and the price.
The B&B appears to be a family run business.
We arrived 4:30 on a Thursday early October to a very disinterested welcome yet we appeared to be the only guests that night - maybe they wanted the night off.
The bedroom was a good size which is important when travelling with a lot of luggage.
The covers on the beds were very tired looking and dated and the double bed was very soft and noisy so probably just worn out. Bathroom was on the small side but reasonably modern.
Breakfast was served by a very friendly younger man and well cooked. Although yoghurt was listed on the menu as being available there was none which was very disappointing - surely as they knew we were arriving (having booked months in advance) they could have ensured that some was purchased ready in case as it usually carries a reasonable use by date.
Access to the town is easy with a 10 minute walk maximum.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are currently going through a process of upgrading rooms (4/5 this winter) but as I hope you can appreciate this does take time as some rooms are in greater need than others but I am sure we can look at doing something with this particular room.
Apologies for their being no yoghurt's available, although this was the only item not available this day.

“Pity about the owners...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

Something very odd about this place, but credit where credit is due. This is a straightforward B&B giving just what you expect for the price. It is clean and stuff works. OK, so the packed lunches are a bit cheap and mingey, but what would one expect for £3.95 (in fact, all the breakfast food is cheap, cash & carry fare). Basically everything is average as expected. Pity then that the owners have a nasty, lazy, chippy, unhelpful, mickey-taking attitude. Right from our tired 5-hour drive from work in London at almost 8pm on a Friday evening, through a mickey-taking waiter at breakfast, to a couldn't-care-less response to asking for drink at their bar, one felt that these are people who are taking the mickey unrelentlessly out of their paying guests (or us anyway). OK, so she is more horrible than him, but they both need to have a good look in the mirror. Maybe foreign tourists can laugh this off as being quaint or quirky, but we are British so we know what's going down here. We know it is downright rudeness. They know holidaymakers don't want a confrontation so they get away with it. If anyone wants details of our experience, please ask. Otherwise, be warned.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. In your post regarding the packed lunches we are unsure as to what you mean, our packed lunches comprises a freshly made sandwich of your choice with many options on white or brown bread, a piece of fruit, packet of crisps and a bar of chocolate (water bottles also available)

In reference to the breakfast food being "cheap, cash & carry fare" we can confirm that this is not the case with our bread coming from the local bakery, meat from the local butchers, beer local brewery etc

Regards
