“Good value for family break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

We booked the family room for a couple of nights away over the Christmas holiday. The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Brecon, close to the shops, restuarants and local market. First impression of the family room was the space, 2 rooms, decent size ensuite and decent storage. The decor was dated but with 2 young children I felt more relaxed about letting them explore and play than I have when I've taken them to more immaculate hotels in the past!! All importantly for a winter break the rooms were really well heated and there was an abundance of hot water. Breakfast was great, with a good selection for all the family (full English, continental, etc). The staff were welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. When you balance what you pay with what you get in terms of room, breakfast, location and service, the over-riding feeling I was left with was good value for money. We'd go back for a short break again.

Room Tip: If you want space and don't mind some traffic in the morning, go for the family room.

“Average visit unfortunately”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

We booked a meal for a group of friends at The George. We hadn't seen each other for a long time and were eager to catch up. Arriving at The George it was encouraging to see how busy it was, (I work in the hospitality business and love to see local pubs/restaurants doing well in this economic climate). After quickly arranging our drinks at the bar we were shown to our table in what I would guess is the restaurant. There was a large party of about 12 and a couple as well as our table set for 6.
First complaint of the night was that we weren't given menus, we had to find a waitress after about ten minutes to ask for them. After choosing our meals there was a slight wait for them to arrive, which was not an issue as we were there to chat, not have a rushed meal, however service is very slow should you be wanting a quick meal!
Food was good, I chose the salmon off the specials and was pleasantly surprised. The George is not fancy food, everything's pretty basic but perfectly fine. My biggest complaint about the entire evening was that there was no customer service! We were asked by whom I would guess was the manager if our meal was alright, but it had only just arrived so no problems would have been found in the 30 seconds of eating. After desserts was cleared we were not asked if we'd like any thing else, drinks or coffee which would have been appreciated, and when looking to pay there were no staff around at all. Minor complaints, but when a business these little details make a difference, and more money would have been spent.
Overall an average meal, but nothing to rave about. More attentive staff would have made the experience a lot more enjoyable, and further sales would have occurred. However, I was pleased to see how busy it was for a week night.

“Almost everything was Almost”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Great Location
Breakfast is fine
Rooms are nice
Service ok
The whole experince would have been improved if we had been made to feel important enough to serve promptly and communicate with. Felt more like strangers than guests
Only significant negative is carpeted bathroom - yuk
I am sure that this place would be fine if your on business

Room Tip: Room three is good

“Go there to eat- not to sleep”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Good food & a welcoming bar, but the hotel side of things was shocking.

The rooms were shabby, very dated and dirty. No parking, a lie in beyond 5 am was impossible due to deliveries outside your bedroom window. The ceiling ligh contained the dessicated bodies of hundreds of houseflies and the ancient shower was like a streak of p!ss.

Unfortunately this wasn't a one-off for me. I was staying on business and had to make a number of trips over the course of a year. This was one customer I couldn't wait to lose- so I wouldn't have to stay in their recommended hotel ever again.

Go to Brecon, but sleep in your car instead.

Room Tip: tried most rooms- didn't find a good one.

“Good location but a little tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

The hotel is in a good location, being in the middle of Brecon and obviously popular with hikers. The room was well equipped and the bed comfortable although it was all a little tired. The room was at the front of the hotel and unfortunately suffered from late night revellers in the street below. The restaurant was busy and the food was fine but not exceptional.
