Betws y Coed is a beautiful location, and the buildings have such character, considering the touristy nature (walkers and climbers, in the main) of the village.
The Royal Oak hotel is a major player in the Betws y Coed tourism market - catering to the higher paying guests. The Stables Lodge is the Royal Oak's 'budget' offering, and it must be said, not at all bad.
The Rooms were huge, and maintained to a good standard. Along the same lines as the Premier Inn or Travelodge hotel chains. The showers were excellent, and the bedding was spotlessly clean.
The problems were twofold...
First: the food in the Stables bar. Really, don't bother. Have food in the Royal Oak instead. It's possible that the two restaurants share a kitchen, but while one has a chef, the other seems to have a small monkey making the food. Pretty dire.
Second: This IS outside the Hotel's remit, but still worth consideration - the belltower at the local church, right next to the Hotel. It chimes on the hour, every hour... right throughout the night! Fine if you're at the other end of the Hotel, but deeply frustrating if your window faces it and you're a relatively light sleeper.
Nevertheless, don't be put off. Stables Lodge is a budget offering, and a fine one at that (just don't eat in the bar, and take earplugs!).
