“Clean, Friendly, Great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2011

We decided to go to Betws-y-Coed without any hotel booking and to simply go from place to place and ask to see available rooms. We looked at numerous rooms in several hotels at 2 or 3 times the cost (after discounts offered!) of the £62/night we paid here.

It was a very pleasant find. While other rooms we saw smelled musty, looked old and worn and made us grimace, the room we got here was clean, tastefuly furnished (thought was put into color coordination) and although being small, which is to be expected in most such B&B places, did not feel cramped. It only had a shower compared to the larger rooms we had seen, which had baths, but we were fine with that.

The owner was very friendly and welcoming which is always a nice feeling for a guest. The next morning we were pleasantly surprised by the nice selection of fresh fruit, juice, yoghurt and hot menu items available for breakfast - all inclusive, in a bright dining room overlooking the main road and park beyond.

For a UK B&B this turned out to be very good value for money and a pleasant experience I can recommend, hence my high ratings.

Room Tip: Room 6 is steetside but acceptable noise level - we slept fine.

“Nice enough stay...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

Decided to go away for a last minute bank holiday break, and this was the only place we found vacant. I was slightly sceptical as to why it wasnt fully booked unlike the other b&bs in the area.. nevertheless, i booked it and am glad i did.
This is a nice place to stay, very clean and caters for all basic requirements i.e tea/coffee facility, towels, TV, ensuite etc. There is no parking at Plas Derwen, so we parked on a road by the church (a few minutes walk away), although there are a couple of other car parks (pay and dispaly) around 4-5 mins walk away.
The owner Pam was very friendly/talkative and helped us with directions to find Plas Derwen even though we arrived very late (around 9pm). Pam also makes a lovely breakfast, we had scrambled eggs which were really nice! Dave was professional but not very friendly.. :( We didn’t see them around much during our stay. I did request an ironing board one morning, it was brought up to the room, but it felt like I had asked too much!
Our room was nicely decorated, not fussy. It got a bit cold in the evening, but there is an oil-filled radiator you can use, which worked well. I have read many excellent reviews about the restaurant, and although i had full intention to dine at Plas Derwen, i never got the chance to! Bed was comfy and the bathroom was better than some other B&B's i have stayed at.
In case you havent been to Betws-y-coed before, most restaurants close around 9.30 - 10pm. Since we got there quite late on the first night, we had to get some fast food from Llanwrst (just over mile away) where there are a few take-aways open til midnight (chinese, indian, italian, fish'n'chips).
The main purpose of our trip was to visit Mount Snowdon, we took the mountain railway up, but decided to walk back down (took just under 2.5 hours but you dont have to be mega-fit to do this- as im not!! ) but worth it for the spectacular views! There are many walk/trails for cyclists and keen ramblers around betws-y-coed too, one of which leads to Swallow Falls which is beautiful. You can start this trail a few mins away from Plas Derwen (just ask the owners).
Betws-y-coed is a beautiful little villiage to which i would return and for a last minute find, I was happy/ satisfied with Plas Derwen but would only stay here again if some of the others were unavailable again!

“Unbelievable special afternoon tea!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2011

My husband and I were visiting Bala in North Wales for a well earned break and on the way back home we called in to this town to have a look around having previously visited a couple of years back. We decided to have a cream tea at Plas Derwen.

My oh my we have never had a tea like it. At least four tiers on the cake stand, with smoked salmon sandwiches at the bottom layer leading up to at least 5 small home made cakes each, the presentation was fantastic, dotted with fresh strawberries and blueberries and it was all delicious, served with earl grey tea. The owner was very attentive and friendly, the surroundings were very stylish and my husband and I really enjoyed a wet afternoon here, thanks to the ambience of the Plas Derwen. Full marks, keep up the good work!
