Our daughter bought us a gift voucher for two nights at this hotel as a stress free break following mum's long illness and subsequent passing. Initial impressions of the exterior were very good. However the receptionist must have been having a bad day or a charisma by-pass. Her customer skills were non existant. I don't think she made eye contact once whilst we were checking in. She gave a vague indication of the location of our room, took my debit card details (without explanation) and that was that. Our room, in the old part of the building appeared OK on first entering, clean but spartan. The view from the window was of a cliff face and an unmade access road to the kitchens. The windows were single glazed, mouldy and pouring with condensation. The bathroom sink was crazed, the taps were filthy, the plug didn't work and the toilet flush was hanging off. The TV in the room was an analogue 17 inch from the nineties with 4 channels and poor reception. The wallpaper was hanging off in parts and there were water stains on the ceiling. Good points, the bed was huge and the towels were clean. Dinner: the food was reasonable but pricey. The receptionist said we would be advised to book dinner but there were only 3 other couples dining. It's not all bad. The waitress on duty (just one) was superb, a young dark haired girl who could have given the receptionist a masterclass in customer service (well done that girl, the hotel should be proud of you). The hotel advertises wi-fi access. It only works in the bar area not even in the lounge nevermind in your room. Breakfast was a triumph after this. Excellent food, attentive staff who couldn't do enough for us. If the rest of the hotel was up to this standard it would improve 100%. Some of the bar staff were very good, others I wouldn't pay in buttons. The bar lunch was tasty but relatively expensive for what it was. Overall impressions. Given its location this could be a brilliant hotel. However it needs money spent to bring it up to an acceptable standard. The management need to look seriously at their staff training especially front of house. First impressions set the tone for the stay. Would we stay again? NO.
PS To reiterate elbee58-12, the coffee really is awful.
Spend more money or have a big stick.
