I feel a bit guilty having to leave Pentre Court a less than positive review as the owners were such lovely people, but I want to be honest.
We got this place out of the Lonely Planet Wales guide - it was under the mid-range section so thought it would be acceptable for a couple of nights. It was almost as if the Lonely Planet reviewer had gone to a different B&B because it didn't accurately describe this one!
When we arrived there was no one in and we stood around for about half an hour wandering what on earth to do. Another couple were also waiting. Eventually, we found another guest in the back garden who didn't know where the owners were but managed to find a family member upstairs (who must have been hoping we went away as we rang the doorbell a lot!). She was nice enough but didn't have a clue who was in what room or what key went with which. Luckily, another family member turned up after about 15 minutes who did have more of a clue and she showed us to our room but didn't show us round the place, ie, where the breakfast room is, where the communal areas are, garden etc). But she did ask what time we wanted breakfast and what we would like.
The house is a gorgeous Georgian property with all its original features, which if done up, could be so lovely. But in its current state is tired, shabby and for a B&B, far too cluttered and untidy. It's fair enough to be like that behind closed doors but not in the areas where guests are! It looked like the owners had been there for years and accumlated lots of antiques and bric-a-brac, as we all do in our family homes, and had started the B&B as an after thought without really doing it propely. It was like staying at an eccentric relative's house!
Our room was nice enough, but just a bit tired with an ancient bed and ancient bathroom. But at least the shower worked and was hot. We didn't sleep that great because the bed was so creaky every time one of us turned over, and the road noise and noisy babbling brook took a bit of getting used too! But it was clean and tidy.
At breakfast we finally met the owner, Judith, who is a lovely lady and breakfast was nice. She chatted about places to go which was helpful.
That day we tired ourselves out so that we would sleep better the second night, which we did, which was great. And our bed had been made and room hoovered which was nice.
At breakfast we just went down at the same time as we hadn't seen the owners and weren't asked what time we wanted it or what we wanted. The same breakfast was given to us again, which was good, but it would have been nice to have had a choice for our money.
So all in all, for £64 per night, I would say this is not a great place to pick. But that price in the Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the cheapest, which is why we picked it. But if we were to go back to the area, I would spend more money and stay somewhere nicer.
They did have a swimming pool in the garden though which was heated and would have been lovely in the sun.
I do feel bad having to leave a 'bad' review, but I would want to know before I booked somewhere, so I hope this helps people.
