“Fine but a little disappointing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2009

I stayed at the King’s Head for 3 nights (Sat / Sun / Mon) in September 2009. I liked it, but it wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for. It's clearly kept with care and love, but my room was a little more basic than I'd hoped and the pub was not appealing to me.

Location: Excellent!! Right in the center of Abergavenny, close to restaurants, shops, etc. It’s on the main street of town, which is pretty narrow. If you’re sensitive to noise, I’d advise avoiding the front rooms. (A group of noisy drunks woke me and everybody else at 3am Sunday.) You can park on the street on weekends & overnight in front of the hotel, but if you’re planning to stay past 9am (I think) on a weekday, you need to move the car to a car park a block or two away.

Rooms: I upgraded to a room with a double bed for 75 pounds. Pluses: clean and fresh; comfy bed; good bedside reading lights; nice tray of tea-making supplies; free wifi (I think I had to ask for a password). Minuses: small (see pictures); TV very small and didn’t get the Welsh-language channel S4C (surprising and disappointing to me, since their website is quite bilingual); exceptionally tiny shower stall (really, really tiny, with no place to put your shampoo and soap).

Food: Breakfast was cooked to order and tasty, with all the standard sausage and eggs, etc. It was served in the hotel’s restaurant. I didn’t eat dinner there, so I can’t comment. FYI the restaurant was closed on Sunday night, as were almost all the other spots in town; I finally found dinner at the Abergavenny Coliseum, a Weatherspoons pub not far from the hotel.

Public areas: This was the biggest disappointment to me, in that unlike other reviewers, I didn’t get any sense of friendly vibe from the pub, which you walk through on the way to the stairs to the rooms. Quite the contrary. I had the sense every time I passed through that literally everybody in the (smallish) room knew everybody else, and that it would have been really awkward for me (solo woman) to drop in for a pint. Some pubs I'm fine going to alone; this one, not. FYI for the mobility impaired: I didn’t see an elevator up to the guest rooms (it would be surprising if there was one, in such an old building), and the stairs are not completely level and even, though they are tightly carpeted.

Arrived late and received a very warm welcome from the manager. Lovely restaurant with excellent choice on menu, with friendly atmosphere also.
The room was far above the standard i expected, en-suite was very clean and tea and coffee facilities in the room.
Disco in the bar, again with a lovely friendly atmosphere.
5 out of 5!!

“Great place to stay in Abergavenny”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2009

Only stayed for 1 night but could happily have stayed longer. The room was very clean and comfortable (room 6) at the rear of the hotel/pub.
We stayed on a Friday night so there was live music in the bar from 9pm. Really enjoyed the singing, great atmosphere.
Im a veggie (and doen't like eggs) so Im usually disappointed with cooked breakfast but not this time. I had grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, beans and hash-browns. There was also a choice of cereal and fruit juices, tea or coffee. My husband had the proper full english breakfast and was really impressed because he had "proper sausages".
We stayed at the Angel in Abergavenny last year but preferred the Kings Head. Its more comfortable, better value for money and the staff are friendlier.
If you are visiting Abergavenny you wont find a better place to stay. Will definately stay here again.

“lovely place to stop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2009

Stopped at the Kings head begining of March, we stopped off on the way to a family wedding at Bristol.
Have stopped in Abergavenny before but this hotel was not open then. Had looked on the trip advisor site and the Kings head had good reviews and they were spot on.
The hotels location is central and has recently opened and is lovely and clean and modern. The shower was powerful and didnt run cold.and thick fluffy towels were provided, the bed was so comfortable with big soft pillows, even the kettle was a quick boil so no having to switch the kettle on 20 mins before you could make your drink.
Had a great evening meal in the venue 59 next to the King head, staff were very polite and friendly and fhe food was excellent.
There was a good selection for breakfast with a great cooked breakfast.
We will definatly use the Kingshead again. The couple who own and run this estalishment have put so much thought into home comforts and are so nice they deserve all the good reports that have been written.

“Couldn't have made a better choice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2009

We're a young couple and wanted to spend the weekend between Christmas and New Year in Abergavenny to visit the town and do some hill walking. After spending hours on the internet looking for a decent hotel/B&B in our price range (around £65 a night, I know, a bit low for a room in Britain these days...), I finally booked a double in the King's Head. We arrived early, around 2pm, and were shown to our lovely pretty small double room with a shower. But as the only room with a bath was still available we upgraded to room 1 (front of the hotel, view of the street), which we absolutely loved. Room 1 is a large, elegant room with a nice bathroom, two huge sash windows, a leather sofa, desk, entrance area, so we didn't mind the extra tenner and happily paid £75 a night, value for money for such a nice room. In cross street you are meters away from the pedestrian shopping street, perfect location. Even closer to town than the Angel Hotel, which is much more expensive. We had a nice meal in the restaurant of the hotel and the owners were extremely friendly, making sure we had everything we needed and knew a lot about where to walk in the area. We found it very thoughtful of them to offer a choice of either breakfast or packed lunch, very convenient for long walks. The pub of the hotel, although small, had a lively atmosphere and good beers. The hotel did not have a car park but we always found a space in the street (allowed to stay free non stop without moving the car from Sat 5pm to Mon 9am, otherwise, car parks available). We loved our weekend in Abergavenny and would definitely recommend the King's Head to anyone who wants a very clean comfortable affordable hotel right in the centre of town.

  • Liked — Large size of room 1 and closeness to town
  • Disliked — nothing!
