“First class in every way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I cannot believe the negative reviews of this lovely and sophisticated B&B.

It is in a beautiful setting, feeling very rural, despite being just a couple of minutes from the heart of the town of Abergavenny.

It is a sympathetically restored building, but with stylish, contemporary decor and furniture. Each room has wonderful attention to detail.

The breakfasts are to die for - locally sourced, organic food, cooked to perfection.

And finally, Gail is a charming and genuine host. There is nothing 'false' or 'forced' about her. I am a good judge of character and she is obviously as honest as they come.

One has to wonder just why the negative reviewers spend so much time apparently looking for faults to report on? Perhaps they were bullied at school.

Room Tip: It's all good!

“Pleasant but needs a few things sorted”

From the outside, this place looks new and inviting. On the inside, everything is modern and clean not the typical feeling of being in someone's house / B&B. The rooms - we had two - were modern and clean but the finishing touches were scanty. Plenty of biscuits, tea bags, chocolates etc in the room but we had to ask for toilet roll and towels. After our room had been cleaned the cups were still dirty. One of the rooms was an en-suite which was clean, very spacious and nicely decorated but the second room had to share a bathroom with two other rooms - this room, the single, also had no wardrobe or drawers for your clothes! (Am led to believe that all rooms will be en-suite soon). There is no separate toilet so if someone takes ages in the shower......you're crossing your legs unless you're lucky enough to be part of the group with the en-suite and you can use their bathroom! Their is no carpet and being a typical modern house, laminate floors allow noise to echo. We could hear snoring and the shower being used from across the hall and the phone conversation of the person next door. The bedroom doors were noisy and heavy so we knew every time someone left their room. The lady of the house is trying really hard to make it a nice place to stay but appears to struggle to manage the whole house and the essential finishing touches are occasionally missing. If we went to Abergavenny again, we would consider staying here as we now know what to expect but you can't help feeling you've walked in to a friendly "Fawlty Towers" when you arrive......

“Fantastic, even our bikes were given a place to stay”

Second visit to Ty Llew on both occassions we were passing through on a motorbike trip.
Great rooms, very friendly and relaxed host, breakfast good, great value. Our two motorbikes were even given room in the locked garage.
Would have no hesitation in returning.

Comfortable rooms, great food, Superb views, unbeatable value and lovely hosts; If this isn't what a truly great B&B should be like then I don't know what is!

To quote one quite ridiculously defamatory review here "where do I start!". I called the landlady of the establishment after 9pm to ask if she had a room, absolutely no problem at all and having arrived even later at nearly 10pm, was welcomed by very jovial lady who showed me to a spotless and quite immaculately furnished room. Yes, the room was not en-suite, but this is something that I understand is due to be done later this year, and to be honest, such was the superb finish of the property that for once I really didn't mind.

I went down to breakfast the next morning to be met with a stunning view down the valley from the dining room. Again immaculately clean and laid out, I was greeted with a superb breakfast bar of the normal cereals complimented by a selection of fine teas, fresh coffee, juice, yoghurts and a wonderful bowl of fresh soft fruits (Melon, Blueberries, Strawberries, Kiwis etc). The proprietor then came in with an amazing cooked breakfast that was truly substantial in proportion, and so over and above the standard B&B fare. Good Bacon and Sausages, grilled cherry tomatoes, mushrooms in butter and rosemary, eggs, beans, hash browns, toast and crumpets. I didn't need to eat again till the evening!

Yes, the owner did engage me in polite and friendly conversation, something that another reviewer here has described as "false", but I truly do pity the poor cynic who feels that a rather upbeat and friendly disposition means that the person must be false.

The nature of my business means that I have to travel the country, staying in 2 to 3 hotels/B&Bs per week, every week, and I can honestly say that this so far above the average quality of a B&B in this country that I actually found it ridiculously good value. It is easy in this country to spend over £70 per night for rooms that are decorated to a much lower standard, be greeted by people who seem wholly unimpressed to be visited by you, and get served a breakfast that frankly makes McDonalds feel like a luxury so, without wanting to make this too much of a personal review (Curtis :-0 ) and respecting the fact that we all view things differently, how on earth someone could have stayed here and then leave a review of such derision makes me wonder if they stayed in the same place as me!

“SUPERB CLEAN B&B WITH A GREAT BREAKFAST”

A FANTASTIC B&B with great delious food more than I could eat. A business trip brought me to Abergavenny, a small town in South Wales. Not knowing this area I was pleased with the knowledge that the owner had of the area, they even drove me to my meeting and collected me later in the day. Although this was only a business trip I would definately come back to Abergavenny and to Ty Llew B&B. This would be my first choice of where to stay as they were so welcoming and couldn't do enough for me. I had a lovely room that was both comfortable and very very clean. The menu offered for breakfast was great and although I only wanted a small breakfast it was both tasty and very satisfying. I was given a packed lunch on my departure for my journey home. I would go back to Ty Llew in a heartbeat. Thank you for a great stay.
