Not scruffy, but heading that way, needs a makeover. Reception OK once she'd stopped chatting to her friend on phone. Room was expensive, and on the small size for a double, but it did have a sea view. On not of caution though is that Aberystwyth car parking is a joke, so best not travel by car (the hotel looks to have only 3 parking spaces).

This falls into my preferred catagory of somewhat old fashioned hotels.
It is worth booking for the views from the front facing bedrooms - lovely and so relaxing with the sounds of the sea - really not a lot of noise at night the weekend we were there. If you had the wrong room however I can guess things would be different. Our friends had rear facing rooms, no views and some noise from machinery. Also they almost had a bad accident as their room had steps in it - there are different levels all over the place. The standard rooms were in some cases also very small. they obviously cater for coach parties which could swamp things a bit. Our upgraded room had what I had coverted most - two exceptionally comfortable chairs with a little table in the bay window with views of the sea, promenade and pier.. I spend ages just staring out - and the sash window did open although not very far - enough to blow things off the table! The bed was comfy with nice bed linen and and had proper bedside reading lights. The tartan carpet was unusual, but the room was fitted with a proper wardrobe , drawers and a suitcase stand all things I regard as essential. The classy hot drinks tray was the smartest I have ever seen in any hotel with two drip sections plus proper crockery and sachets of fresh milk! plus two highball glasses. there were two ! irons and an ironing board, and more cushions than I care to count. The throws on the bottom of the beds were very heavy and not necessary in June. No room safe. The bathroom was mostly taken over by a jacuzzi bath - the pretty coloured lighting in it was the most effective thing about it - not a lot of pressure in the right place from the jacuzzi although it did foam up my bath gell. Unfortunately the bath towel was so small I struggled to get dry afterwards. The shower above the bath was less than impressive. Again there was a complete lack of thinking through where guests actually put things - no hooks for towels/robes and none for coats despite there being an ideal spot to put these. Wose of all the room door was so hard to push open you needed a heavy handed husband to provide the resistance needed. Worryingly the fire door nearest our room did not close completely due to warpage. There was a decent sized television but the remote control proved to be very temermental. The noise pollution was generally good not too much between rooms - there was a wedding on but I can honestly say I didnt hear it. Being on the second floor at the front probably helped. Maintenance I thought was poor - it took two hours of chasing when we arrived to get a light fixed because someone had pulled off the bathroom light pull switch - and there was no natural light in there to see what you were doing! Not fun after a four hour drive.. Also a horrible ring mark on the bedside table which should have been removed.
Meals - dinner was ok - nothing exceptional - portions were a very good size. One poor waiter kept dropping the cutlery on the floor! Breakfast was a serve yourself affair - a good choice of hot and cold apart from only one type of fruit available and no plain yoghurt - just lots of flavoured ones. Tea and coffee were both rather "pale". It offered cranberry always a bonus point in our family - sadly no nuts to go on the cereal.
There is a spacious ball room, lounge and bar seating areas and a smart reception. I cant really single out any staff as exceptional although they were polite. The rear car park is a lottery - arrive early enough and you will probably find a place - we didnt move our car for the whole weekend as I was afraid there would be no space when we returned. luckily you can walk around most of the Aberywtwyth as the hotel is very centrally situated half way between the cliff raiway and pier.

Room tip: upgrade to a seaview - - second floor would be my choice - top floor has very small windows.

We have just spent two nights at this lovely hotel and were very pleasantly surprised. Our room was clean, modern and with the bonus of a sea view. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast plentiful and well cooked. So if you want to drift off to sleep in a comfortable bed, listening to the sound of the sea, choose this hotel.

Stayed for four nights. A classic seaside hotel on the prom. Nice reception area. However, the reception staff throughout our stay didn't seem to be particularly welcoming, enthusiastic, or over helpful – generally lacklustre. This hotel in my opinion, is typical of most family owned hotels. Lots of character, but let down in some areas.

Car parking can be a real pain, as the hotel has very limited spaces available. Luckily a pay park half way up the hill, behind the hotel had a problem with the ticket machine, so was free while we were there. But without that, it could have been even more inconvenient.

The hotel has some nice seating/lounge/bar areas. The free wifi was not fast but very usable. A nice surprise for a hotel of this age/type was to find a reasonably spacious modern lift.

While we were booked-in with a special interest group, we chose a premium sea view option. On entering the room, we found an odd four poster bed, that overwhelms the room. It had just the bare uprights and horizontal rails but no curtaining - not sure what the point was – guess it ticks someones box! What was particularly annoying was the fact that the TV was not aligned with the centre of the bed, meaning that one of us had one of the bedposts interrupting the view of the TV screen. Which was a shame, as it was a good TV with full range of freeview channels.

The bed itself, was surprisingly comfortable, with good quality linen, pillows and duvet (Far superior to Premier Inn). It was nice to find plenty of drawers, but sadly, no wardrobe. Just a hanging space, with four hangers in front of a mirror. There were two very comfortable leather armchairs and a small table in the bay window. A prime spot to enjoy great views of the prom and sea.

A good sized bathroom, but due to a ridiculous corner jacuzzi bath, most of the valuable space was wasted. Very poorly lit and with only one very small shelf. So nowhere to put your wash bag etc. If wanting to wash hair using shower, it was almost impossible to reach the shower controls, as it was on the far side of the jacuzzi monstrosity.

Breakfast was inconsistent, good on some days, pretty average on others. Nothing terrible (except the sausages - truly awful). One morning, they were completely overrun by a coach party and decided to use the smaller dinning room, rather than the ballroom where breakfast was usually served, so we were reduced to what felt like a two shift system. Thus having to return half an hour later than our initial attempt at breakfast. Just as well we weren’t in a hurry!

Special mention to the housekeeping staff who were a friendly bunch. Trying to keep this very tired old hotel clean must be a nightmare, particularly in rooms with those hard to reach-over jacuzzi’s

We had a group dinner on one night. The food was wonderful and the service was amazing. This was all the more impressive, when we heard that they were also catering for a large group in another function room.

Overall, a very relaxing stay, but somewhat let down by the issues outlined above.

Room tip: Sea view well worth paying extra for

Stayed here for two nights on a business trip - the room was incredible; stunning sea view, right on the front. Surprisingly quiet location, with a very comfortable, spacious and beautifully furnished room. Hotel has a lift (most others locally don't). An excellent buffet breakfast was available. Would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: worth getting a sea view room at the front!
