“vile”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

you are greeted by an over grown garden and down stairs curtain hanging of the window pole!!!on entering you need a gas mask because all you can smell is fag smoke...the fire doors are wedged open and the electrics leave much to be desired. our double room had cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and a hole in the wall, the taps on the sink turned round when you tried to turn them on and the toilet roll under the sink was there to catch the leakes. we had stayed over night in Aber with our daughter so we could sort her next terms accomodation for uni.and had booked two rooms hers was just as bad....ABER IS A WONDERFUL PLACE AND THE PEOPLE SO FRIENDLY. this place let themselves down, with some simple maintainence and cleaning it would have been at least comfortable, we didnt wash when we were there and i must admit didnt sleep well as the smell in the rooms was vile.we didnt expect the ritz for the price we paid but we did expect it to be clean.A cooker, pans and general rubbish littered the garden. the breakfast i have to say looked very good but i couldnt eat it incase the cooks food hygiene was as bad as the room cleanliness etc

“Wouldn't recommend it to anyone”

The first thing I noticed walking into the place was that it stank of stale cigarettes, despite numerous signs reminding you that it is a non-smoking place. The person answering the door was not particularly friendly, but i've had worse receptions. It looks like it hasn't been decorated in 30 or 40 years, which isn't necessarily an issue, but it may not have been cleaned in 20. A bit of air freshener at least would do wonders for the guests being greeted at the door!

Looking at the photos, we stayed in the same room as reviewer "oneneverlies" had done a year before, and nothing had changed. No bulbs in the lights above the bed (though I also found the bonus spare single bed a handy place to store my clothes - I didn't fancy putting them on either of the chairs!!). The light above the mirror didn't work either. Luckily we were right in the rafters so the smoke smell from the ground floor didn't waft up that far, though I wouldn't have liked to be on the first floor where it still smelt.

Starting with the tiny en-suite. The shower had lots of lovely black mould, luckily I was only there for one night and didn't have to use it. Wooden fittings in the bathroom were covered in toothpaste stains, and the loo seat is still wobbly. The floor is lifting in places, presumuably with damp getting underneath which isn't a huge problem but also isn't very nice. Smelt a bit musty, but not disgusting.

Beds: Bedding old and faded, it looked fairly clean but I wouldn't be too sure. The place had the hardest pillows i've ever slept on. The bed also creaked a lot, which was rather annoying. Not the best night's sleep i've ever had.

General comments about the room: The window latches were broken on most windows, one repeatedly swung open and there was a piece of string to pull it back, but no obvious way to secure it closed. Cups provided for drinks were clean, which seems to be better than others have experienced.

Price: Disappointed to note the "prices" on the noticeboard in the hallway announcing that rooms were between £26 and £30 per person per night, we were unfortunate enough to be charged a little more than this. The other half had booked online and paid with a credit card, I think if we were paying cash i'd have had some serious comments to make, but really just wanted to get out ASAP!

Breakfast: Average. Side plate wasn't clean though. The breakfast room also reeked of smoke (we were sat next to the curtains) which wasn't very nice, and there was bare plaster in patches on the walls.

The only obvious advantage is that you are given a key to the front door and they don't suggest any kind of curfew, so at least you can stay out quite late and avoid your room!

To sum up, absolutely do not stay there. It may seem like a cheap last minute place, but would really be worth paying another £20 for a nicer place. Would I recommend this hotel to a friend? No. Maybe to someone I didn't much like though ;-)

“"Send in the Grime Busters" B 4 U STAY.”

This is the worst place we have ever stayed in! The room was small wih out-dated furniture and had just been "shown" any kind of cleaning products! (FILTHY!). The airfresheners consisted of a used takeaway tub on top of the wardrobe which contained two yellow blocks that are used in mens urinals !!! The towels smelt musty (like used and dried on a radiator!), which was where we found them. Polystyrein tiles covered the ceiling (is that legal these days?). Lamps on wall just had the bayonnettes of light bulbs left in them, with the wires showing , which were plugged in and switched on! The shower looked like it had it own plant life growing in it! Coffee cups where disgustingly dirty, and the kettle switched itself on randomly! Breakfast was not much better than the room! We had booked in for two nights but had to vacate early. How we managed one night in there we don't know. Crecit/debit card payment was not accepted, only cash or cheques???? We paid for the one night and left but unfortunately had to return as we realised we had no reciept, nor were we offered one! This came written in pencil. (Do not think a copy was retained as it was written on a card with no carbon copy.) As leaving we were asked to tell why we were leaving early and explain what was wrong with the place! (should have gone to specsavers came to mind).. There was nothing right with the place! The one night there was the only thing that marred what was a wonderful weekend. We will be asking for a refund as it was not cheap, and If asked to pay what we thought it was worth we'd have beed hard pushed to give a fiver. Horrible place, horrible attitudes! Would not recommend this to anyone. We have photographic evidence, but unable at this time to load on to this review. Hopefully will be able to add at a later date!
