We stayed in the Wren House a number of years ago and found it delightful. When we needed to find a venue for Christmas and New Year's we were surprised to find it available throughout the period and booked in anticipation of another Windsor getaway in historic surroundings, virtually surrounded with Olde World charm. Bit of a disappointment, really, as the hotel has now been taken over by new owners (South African) who apparently have little or no understanding of English Holiday traditions or the little niceties that make this time of year so special in England.
Whilst the guest room we stayed in (Executive Double) had been recently refurbished and was very nice, the public rooms were a major disappointment. The old bar has been replaced by a functional model, but unfortunately, the ambience from before has gone along with it. My wife said-"if you think about it, we could be on a cross channel ferry." The lounge adjacent to the bar has comfortable overstuffed furniture, but the effect is ruined by three melamine coffee tables that simply don't fit. This room and two others have majestic fireplaces, but we only saw one of them lit twice during our 10 day visit. In contrast, the Christmas decorations were lovely, but someone isn't putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
As we were staying throughout Christmas and New Year, we were surprised not to find at least a welcoming card from the management in the room. The traditional Christmas night buffet was far from traditional and far from festive. A mediocre selection of food--leftovers, I would guess, unattractively arranged with no hint of Christmas cheer in sight. We discussed this and some of the other issues with management and they were, in fact receptive to the constructive criticism we passed on.
On the positive side, the staff, from reception to porters to waiters and waitresses were all superb. Bright and friendly, they went out of their way to make our visit pleasant, but some looked a bit embarrassed when we mentioned the above. The Hotel (or the Theatre Royal) came up with an excellent addition to the package via reserved seats at the Pantomime on Boxing day. As far as we could tell, only my wife and I and another small group took advantage of this and, as the Hotel resembled the Marie Celeste during virtually all of our stay (Yes, even on Christmas and New Years Days) we wondered just how many residents had booked--one staff member told us there were over 40 empty rooms.
Don't get me wrong--this is not a bad hotel, but in keeping with its historic origins, particularly over a holiday period, it could be far better than it is. Overall we found the experience bland and were disappointed to find that the ambience we experienced years ago has been stripped away, apparently in favor of a venue for businessmen on short stays. I'd recommend management should do some revision on the British psyche--particularly over the Christmas holidays--these traditions are welcoming not only for Brits, but for the legions of toursts that visit Windsor--and yes, even for the casual businessman.
By the way, in case I'm accused of sounding too traditional--I'm not English--I'm a Yank, but I do appreciate the traditions and the ambience that make this island special.
