We stayed at the Oakley Court Hotel as we were going to a restaurant nearby. Before you read this review, please note this isn’t just a case of ‘I’m a moaner’, this hotel was like nothing I have ever experienced before. We checked in to what on the surface was a nice big room. The grounds themselves are beautiful and we were looking forward to a relaxing stay. However, when we went into the room I instantly noticed a big stain on the top of the bed (see pictures). I lifted the duvet cover and there was a huge blood stain. The cleaner would have seen this when they changed the sheets but instead of throwing away the duvet they just put a different cover on it. This is obviously not what you would expect for a 4* hotel (I’ve stayed in cleaner hostels!). Housekeeping changed the duvet but did not apologise. We went to the spa (which is tiny so do not book this hotel for the spa only!) and had a walk around the grounds which was pleasant. We then went for dinner. When we returned I asked for a bottle of water. The receptionist was rude and said I would have to pay for this. I understand that they do supply you with a bottle in the mini bar but the fact they checked us into a room with heavily soiled sheets I could not believe this. I told her this and she just responded with ‘there is a tap over there’. I asked to speak to the manager who ushered us into a room (presumably because he didn’t want the other guests to hear pur complaints) and said he would upgrade our room as he could not give us a refund as we booked through hotels.com. We didn’t want to change rooms as it was late at night and we wanted to check out asap in the morning! He then offered us free room service and credited a bottle of champagne which we had to our account which was a nice gesture at least.
As we were offered the free room service we decided to have breakfast in the morning. The gentleman ran into our room with the tray and instead of waiting for me to make space he shoved it on to the table pushing all our belongings on the floor. There was also an open bottle of coke which stared to leak all over my leather boots. He didn’t even attempt to pick it up or stop it leaking and proceeded to talk about what he brought us for breakfast (which was poor, there wasn’t even plates to eat it off of). I asked him what on earth he was doing and replied with ‘it was heavy’ and ran out of our room! I could not believe the terrible service we had received and this topped it off completely. I rang the manager who then sent him back up to ‘fix’ my boots. He wanted to take them away so he could try and wash them himself! I refused as they were expensive and I did not want him using washing up liquid on them! The manager then told us she would credit part of the room back to our account but couldn’t do all of it as we booked through hotels.com (so different to what the night time manager told us). I asked if she would pay for my boots to be cleaned in which she responded ‘I was hoping that the money that we refunded for part of your room would cover this’. I could not believe that I had been charged to stay in such a awful hotel and then she was expecting me to use the ‘compensation money’ to pay for the boots which had been ruined by one of her staff (which did not even cover half of it). She also said (in reference to teh whole ordeal) ‘this doesn’t usually happen – I think you’ve just been very unlucky!’
The maid knocked on our door at 10.30 (check out is 12.00) to clean the room. Luckily we were leaving then as she made it quite clear that she wanted to clean the room there and then. The final insult was when we checked out. The receptionist from the night before asked for my card to put the refund back on. There was no apology at all. The manager was sat next to her and she only acknowledged me when I said could I send the receipt for the cleaning of my boots to them which she did say yes but again did not apologise.
The thing that I find most offensive and disappointing about our stay is the lack of empathy and apology we had from the hotel. The only manager that actually apologised was on the Friday night. Everyone else was frosty, lacked any kind of sincerity and did not care that we were extremely unhappy. We were treated as an inconvenience and were made to feel unreasonable for actually complaining.
I never write bad reviews on here as I believe that negative experiences are often one offs and not representative of the hotel generally. However our stay here really was terrible (and I’ve noticed I’m not the only one who has experienced a room with soiled sheets!).
