“Average rooms. Bad location. Extremely rude owner. Avoid”
We decided to stay at the Cricket Field House Hotel, as it was rated no.1 on Trip Advisor. I honestly don't know why...
We didn't realise the hotel was located so far away from the centre and had we known, we wouldn't have booked to stay here. I don't mind a walk but the hotel is just off a busy road and you have to walk via an industrial estate to get to the city centre, so it wasn't very pretty.
The room was nice enough but below average for a 4* hotel. We were a little disappointed by the dated decor, but it was fine. We were there to enjoy Salisbury rather than stay in the room all day.
What really put a dampener on our stay was what happened at breakfast time the next morning. When we arrived, the proprietor told us that breakfast is served between 8am-9:30am. Not really being morning people (and given that it was Sunday!) we turned up at 9:30am... big mistake.
The proprietor came into the breakfast room and told us we were too late in a really surly manner. I said: 'but I thought breakfast was served til 9:30?' and she said: 'yes, it's served til 9:30, and it's 9:30 now and we're finished'. We didn't quite know what to say. She was so so rude. OK, maybe we shouldn't have turned up bang on 9:30 but we genuinely thought the latest you could order breakfast. And to talk to your customers like that?!
She reluctantly said: 'oh, we could maybe do you some toast, is that OK?', but the atmosphere in the room by this point was very uncomfortable. My boyfriend didn't want to stay and so answered: 'not really', and went to leave the room. She said: 'We can probably do you some eggs,' but my boyfriend doesn't like eggs... We actually wanted to leave at this point and we probably should have, but then she reluctantly relented and agreed to do us a full English, but not without lecturing us on two further occasions about how she'd been serving breakfast for 30 years and how it always finishes at 9:30am and they are the rules etc etc... I said to my boyfriend: 'this is like being at school'.
Despite the breakfast being very nice when it did arrive, and despite really great service from the gentleman who served it, our encounter with the proprietor ruined our stay, and that's why we've given this hotel 2 stars.
If it wasn't for the breakfast incident, we would have given this hotel a 3 because it is pretty average and badly located. But following the bad service, I think this hotel is lucky to receive a 2 from us. There's absolutely no need to talk to customers that way and I would not recommend anyone to stay here as a result of our experience.
