“Great Potential, however needs the hotel inspectors help ..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2010

Location good but the first room we were given was freezing - it transpired the plumbing had failed recently and been repaired. They obviously didn't think to check before putting guests in the room. To their credit they were very happy to move us to a different (and better) room with no problems or extra cost.

Both rooms were clean and tidy but suffered from peeling paint on the ceilings etc, small things that can make a large imression. On departure day we were advised that the advertised cooked breakfast was unavailable. On departure no partial refund was offered for this until it was requested as we'd been obliged to have breakfast away from the hotel. This was only begrugingly offered after i complained to a very unobliging and unproffesional receptionist.

This hotel has huge potential but is really in need of a visit from the hotel inspector as it could really be a gem but falls some way short at the moment. For an historic building a stones throw from the cathedral to have no customers in the bar and just one couple in it's restaurant on a saturday night told it's own story.

“Historic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

Lots of history behind this hotel. Thats the best part besides the friendly staff. Other than that I can't say much for it. The shower in the bathroom leaked the entire time we were there. Wasn't the cleanest and not for the light hearted. I think it is changing owners and hopefully they will make the necessary improvements. Good location. The wall were very thin and you could hear what was going on in the next room.

“Great building, poor hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

We stayed in their flagship King Charles I room and were really impressed by the room and it's furnishings. The building is a romantic historical building in a great location. The staff are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately you will pay far far too much to stay in a hotel with poor facilities and a terrible cleaning habits.

The dead fly in our bath was still there on the third night, as was the rather large dead moth on the windowsill. The breakfast was ok but nothing speacial and for the price was less than we expected.

“A Mixed Bag”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

We stayed for 1 night in room 14 which was at the top of the main building. We arrived at 1.40pm, not intending to check in but to park the car, as we had already contacted the hotel regarding this. We were told straight away that we couldn’t check in as there was still 20mins to go! But parked the car no problem this is a really good bonus. We returned to the Kings at 5ish and were able to check in. I was quite enchanted with the winding uneven stairs, up to our room. Our room was fine, up in the roof with beams and a sloping ceiling. There was a huge bathroom with a large bath on legs. There was a roof window directly over the bed but this did not have a blind. Generally I would say that the hotel lacks detail. We had breakfast which was good, but in a room that just felt grubby and not really with old world charm. We had checked out the web site which makes the hotel look fantastic and were planning to eat there at night, but they had no real ale on. We were generally disappointed with the Kings Arms.

We also saw the Tipex!

“Avoid - completely mediocre”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2010

There is absolutely nothing to recommend this place: really basic breakfast, room felt old with a frayed carpet and patches on the ceiling, there were odd little signs around the room about what you can/can't do which made you feel like you were in a suspicious juvenile detention centre rather than a welcoming hotel, service was ok from some but really grudging from others and the place was grossly overpriced. The location is fine though, thankfully allowing you a quick escape so you can spend as little time in the hotel as possible.

Also hilarious was that they have a comments book but had attempted to tipex out a negative comment, though you could still read it. They can't even get that right, and anyway should be looking to learn from the negative comments rather than pretend they're not there.

I can't believe they have a sign at reception encouraging you to write a review on tripadvisor! They must be seriously disillusioned.
