Did a lot of searching on the web for just the right hotel for us to stay at. It had been about 5 yrs since last visit to the UK & 12 since last visit to Salisbury. All the research I had done on the hotels of Salisbury showed the Grasmere House to be one of the better ones. Boy was I wrong.
The hotel looked like a typical old English home, which it was at one time minus the addition later on. The grounds both front and back were well kept and had nice views. On either sides of the building however, was old grills, plastic tubs etc, that you normally wouldn't notice unless you are in the dining room. Then you see the back of the house (beautiful) and the side of the house (horrible) + the staff goes out on the side to have a cigarette which can be a bit unappealing while eating.
Now you enter the house from a charming front entrance and hear a constant beeping sound, which I later found out was the door alarm. Everytime I came to the lobby I heard the alarm beeping. The carpet throughout hotel, hallways, & rooms was very worn. Chipped paint or very worn off paint was found throughout hotel. One hallway door corner had just been painted and the three days we were there you could smell paint. A bit of a puzzle was why didn't they paint the whole door (removed to a proper place to vent) is was not a main door, just a hall pass thru.
Continuing on, the hotel bed room was large, good size bathroom, pretty view from the window out back of the property. The furniture was very worn, chipped, and mismatched which I would have excepted if it was antique, but it was not. Bathroom was clean, but no counter space had to put tolietres on ledge of window. Towels were very worn and thin, NO washclothes at all in the whole hotel, just large hand towels (interesting). Bed was ok, but would sink in the middle a little. Sheets and blankets were also very worn and bedspread (which weighed a ton) smelled and was worn.
The free breakfast was ok, everything hot was processed even eggs. Coffee, tea, juices, cold cereal, toast and fruit were all fresh and good. Dinner on the other hand was very good, no complaints.
Service was also very good, from check in to the resteraunt. The bar however was operated by the front desk check in staff, which ment if they were busy you would have to wait awhile to get a drink. The bar was also the size of a large walk-in closet. I think the word is quaint for that.
Overall we paid £55 per night (about $79.00) per night per room. They had Wifi in the lounge, but if you wanted it in your room it was at an additional charge of £5 per day ($7.50).
Aside from pretty view, nice staff, great dinner, I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Salisbury for the first time. On my walks through the town saw far better hotels, but at a slightly higher price. Also, when asking the staff were to go for food everything they said was either a 5 to 15 mins. walk from the hotel. Well, maybe so if you were in your 20's and had jogging shoes. Most places were at that distance if you drove only.
Beautiful architecture throughout the town and most side streets.
