We spent Christmas 2011 on a Mercure three night package at the White Hart beginning on Christmas Eve.
We really weren't sure it was a good idea but generally the staff went out of their way to try to make everyone welcome and give the whole thing a festive air. There were mummers during dinner on Christmas Eve, a Salvation Army band after for carols and mulled wine and mince pies for those who went to Midnight Mass at the cathedral, a spectacular event whether you believe or not.
Christmas Day brought lunch, tea and cake, a buffet supper and a quiz, and Boxing Day a ploughman's lunch followed by a trip to the panto and rounded off with a posh dinner and entertainment from a table magician who was very good.
Breakfasts were english or continental, and good if a little disorganised if you came down late as we always do.
There seems a lot of emphasis on the food in this review but there seemed a lot of food! By and large it was good, but the veg was overdone more often than not.
We really did enjoy it more than we thought we would. Unless you ask otherwise, you sit on tables of eight or ten so always have a group to talk to and we found that once middle aged people start firing party poppers across the table the ice is broken!
The hotel was good on little touches like a poinsettia in the room and a little box of chocs for each of us.
All in all a good experience at a hotel right in the centre of Salisbury town.
