“A pity about the hangars”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I thought this was a great hotel and ticked all the right boxes. The receptionist was warm and helpful. The room was modern, spacious with ample storage space. It was nicely furnished and the bedding was superb. The free WiFi was much appreciated. The bathroom was excellent..
I did not have dinner there but breakfast was good and the cooked food was brought to the table to order.
Now the hangar problem. In the fine bedroom the hangars are of the Chinese puzzle type to prevent your stealing them. They are inconvenient to use. So much about the hotel gives the feel good factor that it spoils the effect when you open the wardrobe and have the feeling the management are shouting "thief" at you. In my opinion the Malmaison and its sister group the Du Vin should do better than this. I know there may be a few exceptions but I think the loss of a few hangars would be worthwhile to show respect for the customers.

Room Tip: 310 was quiet.

“Memorable stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Malmaison have style, no doubt about it. Great location, comfortable room, imaginative food and beverage offering. This is not your average hotel brand and it's the small quirky touches that set them apart. The service was good but not exceptional. Staff however were friendly, helpful and willing to engage with guests. Paid £79 room only on advance purchase, great value. Malmaison are different, original and great for recharging ones battery. Impressed, thank you!

“Overall a very enjoyable experience . . .”

We stayed on a busy Saturday, booking in was fine but you are left to find your own way to your room. The room itself was delightful, clean and fresh, heavy curtains kept out much of the night lights and noise from the busy streets below. An interesting view if you like intercity roof tops!

The bar and hotel in general is well presented and the staff helpful and attentive.

The restaurant was fine, good service but sadly they add the service charge and you have to say you don’t want to tip which personally I find very annoying ~ if I am going to tip then I want to decided on how much ! The food is reasonable and for a city centre location the prices are not too outrageous.

The location is in the heart of Leeds gay quarter so you have to be prepared for some interesting sights both in the hotel and the surrounding area.

There is no immediate parking but there is an NCP a stone’s throw away.

It is a hard hotel to sum up largely because its location lets it down.

“Perfectly comfortable but not quite perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Stayed at the Mal for one night in Jan 2012 whilst on business. Have no major reservations about going back.

Service from the reception staff, in the bar and in the restaurant was really, really good. Friendly, efficient and you get the impression that nothing is too much trouble.

Food was excellent. I had a rump steak and onion rings in the restaurant (I'm easily pleased) and it was cooked perfectly. Table service was fast but never pushy. Expect to pay around £20/25 for a main meal with a few drinks, not unreasonable given the quality of the food and size of the portions.

Rooms are spacious and well equipped. Free internet connection is always welcome as a business traveller, and there is an iron in your room to save the hassle of getting one sent up from the front desk. Shower has really good water pressure - an unusual observation but in my experience, it is often impossible to find a decent one at city centre hotels. Beds are large and extremely inviting.

Only two small gripes with my stay:

(1) Parking is a bit of a hassle. The hotel is a few hundred yards from a Q car park which does have a ticket entry system, better than your standard NCP car park for security. It cost my £5.50 for 24 hours parking. However as there is no where to stop outside the hotel, expect to trek from the hotel to your car with all your stuff potentially in the rain. That was my experience.

(2) My room was really warm and led to a restless night's sleep. I was on the 3rd floor and couldn't open the window to let any fresh air in. Turning the thermostat down in the room didn't seem to make any difference. I'd been up working late and would only have managed 6 hours if I'd slept right through, so this wasn't ideal. Next time I stay I will play with the thermostat earlier and call reception if I can't get the room temperature down to something more comfortable.

Room Tip: If you find your room is warm, check the thermostat is working before you go to bed.

“inner city luxury!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

our friend has taken over a city centre pub (the duck and drake-busy city pub with a band on most nights!) so we wanted a central hotel near all the fun and leeds shopping-especially kirkgate market-for the night and malmaison came up on a search-so we booked! amazing decor, clean, tidy, lovely bedding, discrete but helpful staff, i thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will book again on our next visit!!
