“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I booked this a a treat for my daughter and I. I wish I hadn't bothered. We stayed on the 14th January 2012. The room we were given initially was shabby and parts of it not very clean. There as coffee/tea stains down the wall. The headboard and armchairs were threadbare in parts. There were a number of stains on the grubby looking carpet. There were no Molton Brown products or homemade fudge. There were only a few items in the mini bar. I was advised the lack of stock was due to the fact that the hotel only came out of administration in October and they were having supplier problems due to previous unpaid bills. I was also advised that they were aware there was a need for refurbishment but the new owner was abroad and didn't really care!! I didn't really care either to be honest, the fact they acknowledged the problems made the situation worse. Talking of things getting worse...I ordered room service and the food was appalling. The wedges were so hard (and had freezer burn!) that they broke part of my tooth !!(which is now costing me £200 for a crown - thanks very much!!). I rang reception to complain about this and the state of the room. They moved us to a nicer room. I thought this was the end of my bad experience but I had to experience breakfast yet!! I ordered room service which came as agreed. Some of the fruit was off. The kiwi had mould on the skin and was shrivelled up and the pineapple was brown and off. I was disgusted. The Manager was very apologetic and very nice but it is not good enough for a so called '4 star boutique hotel' to treat customers in this way. What was meant to be a relaxing night away ended up in me spending more time talking to the manager than with my daughter, and more time moving rooms than relaxing in it!! I hope no one else has this experience there!!!!!!

Thank you for your comments.

Having spoken to you during your stay, I was concerned regarding the areas you had addressed with me and further to looking in to these areas we agreed upon the compensation for your disappointment.

As I discussed with you we are hoping for a refurbishment towards the latter part of the year and I do hope we will be able to welcome you back to the hotel then.

Kind regards

“Real boutique hotel in Leeds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

42 The Calls is the orinal boutique hotel in Leeds, and probably still the only real one. Good cuisine in theadjacent Brasserie Forty 4. The excellent cuisine at the original Pool Court at 42 The Calls is gone however. Apparently, chef Jeff Baker had left long ago (I was staying at 42 in 2005 or so, when Leeds was booming and the pool court was michelin starred). Also, the rooms look a bit tired. Still excellent service.

“Nice hotel but could do with some updating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stayed here a couple of nights over Christmas and overall had a pleasant experience. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the building had lots of character. The bed was very comfy and the room was quiet with a nice view of the river. However it lacked some finishing touches to make it a realy good hotel.
For example - We stayed in a junior suite which was extremely spacious, with a whole seperate living/dining room, however the decor in the second room was very dated and tired. I would have been embarassed to entertain guests there.
There was a note in the guest handbook saying not to drink too much of the tap water, but only one small bottle of mineral water was left in the room each day meaning we had to call down to reception to ask for more frequently - this was always delivered quickly and with a smile, however I would expect for a room with 2 people in it that they would just leave more water.
A little bit of money spent of re-doing some of the decor (especially the bar area) and a little bit more finesse would make this a really good hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

The staff and I are pleased that overall you had a pleasant experience during your stay over Christmas, however, I was obviously most concerned to read your comments regarding the décor, within the second room in your Junior Suite.

We are planning a total refurbishment later in 2012 which will of course include all the suites, in the meantime if you are planning a visit to Leeds, do contact me directly so I can personally oversee your reservation.

Kind regards

“Charming & full of character”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

--- FOR ---
. Good location
. Doggie friendly
. Room oozes character
. No cleanliness issues
. Great decor & furnishings

--- AGAINST ---
. No air-con, just radiator control

Very impressed, stayed just after New Year and didn't experience any noise issues (except the stormy Yorkshire weather!) They welcome dogs which is a must for us - even giving your pooch her own bowls and mineral water!

Location is great - a stones throw from the Market & Vicar Lane area with the bus station a few minutes away but felt secluded from the main drag in it's cobbled street.

No on-site car park but agreement with NCP less than a minutes drive away (if you don't get lost in Leeds one way systems!)

Deluxe Room (on top level) was very comfortable and the furnishings made it feel luxurious. The old mill conversion left it with plenty of character from the wooden beams and brick walls. We stayed during a very wet and very windy couple of days and the room stayed warm - too warm in some ways as we kept waking up because it was too hot - shame there isn't any air-con. We could open a window for instant cooling but the weather stopped us on this occasion.

Didn't try their famous breakfast but there are plenty of eateries in the immediate area - including a fresh fish restaurant.

Nice touches with the complimentary drinks and biscuits including a ground coffee cafetiere which was a nice touch. Unusually they don't supply any creamer so every time you fancy a drink you're supposed to call down for some milk. Also we didn't see any fudge as promised - despite asking, they said they were aware they didn't have any.

Overall we loved our short trip here and will definitely book here again without any hesitation. When you have a small dog with you your hotel trips are VERY limited but even without a family pet this hotel really stands out.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

It was lovely to read that you were very impressed with your stay and will definitely book again.

As we are a corn mill conversion, we are very lucky to have such beautiful features around the building and I am glad you were able to appreciate these along with the furnishings.

On your next visit if you would like I can turn off the radiators in your room and provide you with a fan.

Until then Happy New Year and I hope next time you will be able to join us for our “famous” breakfast.

Kind regards

“Comfortable and relaxed stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

We had room 311, a corner room overlooking the River Aire. It was very comfortable, with a big bed, desk, comfy chairs, fridge mini bar and kettle. The bathroom was small with a shower over the bath, but not quite enough shelving space to put stuff. Overall, it was excellent value at £100 including breakfast, which was a buffet plus cooked breakfast, served in the River Room. The hotel is well located, just a short walk from the shops and loads of restaurants. We parked our car in a nearby multi-storey, which was fine for us.

Thank you for your review.

It was great to read that you enjoyed the furnishings within room 311 and your breakfast.

As the majoity of our rooms are laid out differently, some bathrooms have slightly more shelf space than others. I have noted on your profile that you would like more shelf space in the bathroom and I would be more than happy to allocate you a room with this on your next stay.

Kind regards
