I stayed in the Queens Hotel for 1 night with my partner. Upon arrival, the reception staff were very welcoming and we had been advised that our room had been updated!! When arriving at our room I could not see what the upgrade was as it was the Superior Double Room that I had booked anyway!! Also, if you get an upgrade I would have expected a room with a lovely view rather than a view of back streets and buildings!! Also, we were put in a room that was directly above a function taking place and the music was very loud and irritating, fortunately, it didnt last all nite!! The bathroom which was quite small was also lacking a bathrobe as only one was provided. The room was freezing on arrival and it appeared that the heating system was broken. Although the room was of a high standard (Room 301) and very clean, I noticed some things that seriously needed attention to detail. For example, the gold coloured voils at both windows needed changing as the bottoms of both were frayed and had holes in. The paintwork needed touching up too, not just in the room but also the stairways needed totally redecorating in some parts.
We stopped off at the Queens Bar to grab a bite to eat. I can recommend the paninis especially the cajun chicken, bacon and pesto as it was delicious although I thought a little on the pricey side!!
On the evening we had a table booked in the basement restaurant which we were both looking forward to. I must say I was extremely disappointed with the food as I think I have had better in my local Italian restuarant for happy hour!!! I ordered the caramelised onion and goats cheese tartlet, which resembled and also tasted like something you would buy from Asda that comes in a party selection pack!!! It was steaming inside and still cooking as if it had been in the microwave. My main course was the beer battered fish and chips. Much to my disappointment I can say that the best bit of the dish was the mushy peas and tartar sauce, as the fish was too crispy, the batter verging on the burnt side and the chips looked like and tasted like mccain chips that had just come directly out the fryer!!! Needless to say, I left a whole plate of chips!!! I attempted dessert, only because I was still under my allowance. I ordered the bakewell tart and ice cream. This came out steaming as if it had been warmed up in the microwave and tasted partially cooked. The only redeeming thing about the restaurant was the staff who were very polite and friendly!!!
When returning to the hotel after our night out, we went to the Queens Bar for some cocktails. The waiter was extremely nice and we sat at the bar chatting with him for a while. When we got back to our room we were pleased to find the heating had been fixed and it was lovely and warm. In the morning, we went down for breakfast which was delicious. There was a good choice of fresh fruit, juices and cereals as well as a fried breakfast. Once again the service was fantastic. I paid £160 for the night which included breakfast and evening meal. To be honest I don't think it was worth even £100.
