“A bit different- in a great location”

We stayed one night on a little city break. Ideally located with access from the station. we only used the room- which we got a good rate on- but it's so well located you may as well eat out. Restaurants and shops just a few minutes walk.
hotel is very recently refurbished in art Deco style- with many original features, we had a massive room, great bathroom, good temperature, big comfy bed, sky TV- and filter coffee- what more do you want?

“Excellent Short Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed over a weekend booking two rooms and travelling with three generations. The main thing to say was that we had a superb time and were delighted with the hotel.

The hotel is very centrally located, adjoining Leeds' main railway station and providing convenient access to shops and restaurants. Other reviewers have commented adversely about noise but I can't say this was a big issue for us.

Our rooms were spacious and well appointed although we did have a Suite and a Superior double. We would have liked to stay on the Q Club floor but the hotel has a no children policy up there. I sort of understand that but it may be worth the hotel considering applying some discretion occasionally. The rooms were well prepared and kept clean throughout (I know the manager reads these - we were on the 7th floor!) and had all the usual amenities including widescreen TV, safe and, helpfully, a fridge.

I thought the staff were the hotel's strongest suit, I wish I could mention names but a great welcome at check in, very friendly to our son, and a quick and efficient process. We arrived not long after lunch but were given rooms immediately. Our car was also quickly and safely parked for us. We had booked the shopping package so enjoyed a glass of champagne in the bar (twice courtesy of my kind parents) and again, the bar staff were excellent. Friendly and attentive, they refused to let us stand and wait for our drinks but insisted they bring them over to our table, that's just nice. We only ate breakfast in the hotel but again the staff were superb. It's the small touches that make it, I've eaten breakfast in more hotels than I care to consider, but when someone comes over and asks your child if they'd prefer to have a hot chocolate, that's what makes it different.

The hotel has celebrated its Art Deco heritage and has not attempted to create an homage to glass and steel. If ultra modern is your thing, then perhaps the Queens is not for you (although I'm sure they'd like to try and convince you). For us, we loved the styling and appreciated the hat-tip to a by-gone age.

Thanks to all and we look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Higher floors will have less city noise

Dear Ian E

Thank you for taking the time to post such a concise and balanced review of the hotel. I am pleased that you enjoyed its central location which is as you say perfect for access to the train station, shops and restaurants.

I am sorry that you were unable to stay in QClub, it’s not that there’s a no children’s policy more that we cannot offer interconnecting rooms on that floor and there are no suites large enough to accommodate a family.

I was very pleased to read that you enjoyed all aspects of your stay and we would very much like to welcome you back as our guest soon.

Warm regards

“Overated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed here overnight after a recent business conference and had heard rave reviews about how posh the hotel was. The entrance was quite grand with a revolving door and valet staff - okay slight exaggeration, one member of valet staff who looked very miserable. Check in was swift and I was impressed with the baggage service...until I got to my room later in the day and found my luggage was upside down and had evidently been thrown into my room rather than placed neatly. Having said this, my room was very clean and spacious and my only complaint would be the noise of the 1940's style lifts outside my room. As my room was also at the front of the hotel I was woken early in the morning by the city traffic. I ate two lunches and one evening meal in the hotel which were okay but definitley not upto the standard I was expecting from such a highly rated hotel. The evening meal could have just scraped it but the lunches could easily have come from any old work canteen. The bar was nicely decorated but prices were well inflated - 2 pints or beer cost over £9.
In all, I would stay here again if someone else was paying. If not I'd save my money and book in somewhere cheaper with just as good a reputation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the lifts and not at the front of the hotel.

Dear Pluto 175

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of The Queens, I was pleased to read that you were happy with many aspects of your stay including check in, your room. I am sorry that the lift noise affected your stay, I can assure you that we do everything we possibly can to ensure our guests enjoy a good nights sleep, however as we enjoy a city centre location it can on rare occasions affect our guests and can only apologise. I can confirm that a great deal of research has been undertaken to ensure that our prices are on a par with those in similar establishments in the city and I am sorry if you felt that you did not receive value for money.

I do hope that your one off occasion has not tainted your view of our hotel and look forward to welcoming you back as our guest.

Yours sincerely

“Great Customer Service but poor food in the basement restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed in the Queens Hotel for 1 night with my partner. Upon arrival, the reception staff were very welcoming and we had been advised that our room had been updated!! When arriving at our room I could not see what the upgrade was as it was the Superior Double Room that I had booked anyway!! Also, if you get an upgrade I would have expected a room with a lovely view rather than a view of back streets and buildings!! Also, we were put in a room that was directly above a function taking place and the music was very loud and irritating, fortunately, it didnt last all nite!! The bathroom which was quite small was also lacking a bathrobe as only one was provided. The room was freezing on arrival and it appeared that the heating system was broken. Although the room was of a high standard (Room 301) and very clean, I noticed some things that seriously needed attention to detail. For example, the gold coloured voils at both windows needed changing as the bottoms of both were frayed and had holes in. The paintwork needed touching up too, not just in the room but also the stairways needed totally redecorating in some parts.

We stopped off at the Queens Bar to grab a bite to eat. I can recommend the paninis especially the cajun chicken, bacon and pesto as it was delicious although I thought a little on the pricey side!!

On the evening we had a table booked in the basement restaurant which we were both looking forward to. I must say I was extremely disappointed with the food as I think I have had better in my local Italian restuarant for happy hour!!! I ordered the caramelised onion and goats cheese tartlet, which resembled and also tasted like something you would buy from Asda that comes in a party selection pack!!! It was steaming inside and still cooking as if it had been in the microwave. My main course was the beer battered fish and chips. Much to my disappointment I can say that the best bit of the dish was the mushy peas and tartar sauce, as the fish was too crispy, the batter verging on the burnt side and the chips looked like and tasted like mccain chips that had just come directly out the fryer!!! Needless to say, I left a whole plate of chips!!! I attempted dessert, only because I was still under my allowance. I ordered the bakewell tart and ice cream. This came out steaming as if it had been warmed up in the microwave and tasted partially cooked. The only redeeming thing about the restaurant was the staff who were very polite and friendly!!!

When returning to the hotel after our night out, we went to the Queens Bar for some cocktails. The waiter was extremely nice and we sat at the bar chatting with him for a while. When we got back to our room we were pleased to find the heating had been fixed and it was lovely and warm. In the morning, we went down for breakfast which was delicious. There was a good choice of fresh fruit, juices and cereals as well as a fried breakfast. Once again the service was fantastic. I paid £160 for the night which included breakfast and evening meal. To be honest I don't think it was worth even £100.

“Fantastic service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012 via mobile

I have arranged an Awards Presentation evening for business reasons for the last three years.
I have chosen the Queens for all three Awards Ceremonies.
Firstly because they were competitively priced and secondly and thirdly, because the service and experience was fantastic as it was on the following occasions.
Year four ceremony is planned for March and looks like being just as good as the last three...
I would recommend The Queens as a hotel to stay in for personal enjoyment and for business use as well.
