“Christmas Day Meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

As this is a fairly local hotel, we used to frequent this hotel a lot when it was privately owned some years ago, and indeed held our Wedding Reception there. We hadn't been for several years until we attended a friends and family Christmas Day meal.

This review only relates to our dining experience as we didn't stay over, but I'll try and cover other areas that maybe of help.

Firstly - we found it easy to park at the hotel. It only has a small parking area out front, but there is plenty of street parking nearby. We received a nice warm welcome on our arrival and were shown to the bar and restaurant area.

In terms of decor, and not to be too negative, I would class the hotel as comfortable and functional, rather than luxurious, but all areas were clean and tidy and the public areas we used are finished to a high standard.

Ok, so the main reason for writing was the meal itself. We've had a few Christmas Day meals in the past that have left a lot to be desired, but we could't fault anything here. As there was a lot of people dining at the same time (a 3pm sitting) groups were led to their tables with small intervals between - avoiding any rush and I guess helping serving staff and the kitchen avoid a big rush.

There was a decent choice for all courses on the menu and our orders were taken within a few minutes of being seated. There were 12 of us in total covering all generations and everybody found something they'd like. The orders were taken professionally and one or two special requests were noted. Everybody was served with each course in turn at the same time and any special requests had been dealt with. Sometimes on these occasions the food suffers, but all enjoyed every course and whilst I wouldn't class it any where near 'fine dining' it was very enjoyable and plentiful.

We weren't rushed after the meal and could all sit and chat without staff appearing as if they were in a rush to get you out so they could leave.

Overall - for a Christmas Day party, I would recommend without hesitation.

“Couldn't fault our stay at all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

Booked in advance and direct via Tesco Clubcard vouchers.

Email queries prior to visit were dealt with efficiently and effectively.

Booking did have to be altered at short notice (from two nights to one), again, communication and handling of the issue was very professional.

Friendly check in on arrival, receptionist explained all hotel features with a very courteous delivery.

We were allocated a suite on arrival (room 42) on the upper floor. One of the furthest rooms from reception which may not suit some, signs to the room were adequate.

Suite was lovely, comfortable bed, settee, flat screen TV, ample storage facilities with separate dressing room area, and spacious bathroom/shower area

Breakfast was delicious, full English available, together with self service cereal/toast/drinks area at the bar.

Location wise - on the edge of the city, we were in our own car so can't comment about public transport, although the hotel is located very close to a main road into the city

Would recommend and would stay again if we were in the Bradford area

Room Tip: Suites are very nice - especially room 42. Ask for a room situated in a quiter area, especially if t...

“Guidepost...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We booked online for a non-smoking double room without breakfast in the Guidepost, but on arrival were told that booking online was 'not reliable' for securing the type of room you actually want, which seemed a little bizarre to say the least. We then found our allocated room was situated in the smoking wing of the hotel and after wading through the dank smog of the corridor, were less than delighted with the tobacco scented pillow cases and sheets. A visit to reception resulted in another warning not to book online (as non of the information ever saves properly) and the marvellous idea that the cleaner could come and spray air-freshener 'for a long time' and 'at the bed'. We of course chose to decline this ridiculous, if not creative suggestion (top marks for thinking on your feet) and instead concentrated on removing the breakfast booking from our bungled reservation.

After a lovely dinner at Villagios restaurant on Halifax Road (which I can highly recommend), we returned to the Guidepost to find masses of smokers huddled in the main entrance of the hotel (did no-one tell them there is a smoking wing?) and a disco in full effect in the main function room. This would not have been a problem but for the fact that the 'Benson & Hedges' suite is situated directly on top of the main function room. To clarify, the noise wasn't your usual distant and muffled hum of the wedding disco you sometimes get in a hotel... it was listening to George Michaels greatest hits, word for word, laid on a bed that stunk of damp Woodbines. An initial call to reception proved useless but we were told that the disco would end at 1am. On the second call we were asked by the Bar and Restaurant manager if we received a booking confirmation for our room. Well... better late than never I thought, but alas she was referring to the 'small print' that states there might be functions held on weekend nights. Unfortunately, our booking confirmation email did not contain this information.

Had I known what an online booking for a non-smoking hotel room at the Guidepost would actually entailed I could have saved myself a lot of money by taking a sleeping bag along to the karaoke at the British Queen pub just round the corner.

Room Tip: Don't book online.
