Our party was rapidly de-coached and booked in. Being mostly mature travellers, many of us were given rooms on the ground floor - which means walking down a corridor past the leisure pool to start the rooms section. We found Room 104 quite acceptable, nothing exceptional but clean, bright and quite spacious. But having just begun to relax, after our journey, the Manager came and asked us if we would very kindly exchange rooms with another guest who suffered mobility problems and wanted a room nearer reception. We were flabagasted - to say the least! My wife was currently awaiting a hip revision and also suffered "mobility problems" too!
However, since the appeal was quite strongly made, we agreed to swop a short distance away to Room 126 on compassionate grounds. (we subsequently found this room was close to a door to the central courtyard which provided quick access to the dining room and reception.) But having done so (and the lady with problems and her carer having taken our nice room) we found out why they wanted to swap! The room smelt of stale smoke and other odours, was not as bright and clean and a little more of a "squeeze"! So we called the staff back and also insisted on a better room. We were then offered the four poster bed Room 208 on the 1st floor, up a short flight of stairs.
That room was also quite acceptable, although I personally did not find the bed and the harsh cover very comfortable. The hotel is not all that old - but obviously gets well used and has not had a makeover for some time. We can confirm the noisey floorboards - we had a herd of Germanic Elephants pacing our outside corridor - thanffully - not all night!!
Fortunately, we had a nice evening meal in the restaurant, nothing fancy but good edible food and plenty of nicely cooked vegetables and generous sweet. Breakfast next morning was also quite edible, but pre-cooked and left in large heated containors. I have had better. My wife didn't fancy the cooked breakfast and made do with the toast and preserves. We found the staff polite and helpful, and the whole place mostly clean. But I would not rate it above 2 stars. I have stayed in more welcoming and comfortable guest houses charging a little less for DB&B. OK for a short stay or overnight.
