My Wife and I booked in for Boxing day night Allthough the reception staff were helpfull the room was potentially dangerous. I should add that I am a proffessional Building surveyor who deals with the compliance of public buildings and schools with health and safety law. so I know what I am talking about.
The first defect was both cups provided with the tea and coffee severely cracked and damaged and no teaspoon. Soon corrected by the hotel staff at reception.
econd defect was a badly dented and stained electric heater in the room it was also badly stained. However I turned it on and it worked so we left it on in the room to warm it up while we went to a relatives christmas party. We got back about 11:45 and the room was nice and warm so we turned the heater down and went to bed. I was kept awake by the heater clanging every 15 minutes so a bad nights sleep. Had a lie in and went to have a shower at about 9.00am the next morningonly for the worter to come jetting out of a badly ;leaking shower hose so we pulled the shower curtain over to direct the jet of water into the bath. Then the wife shouted out there was water all over the bathroom floor. I got out of the shower to find the bathrrom floor under about 1/2 inch of water. Checked it out and found the shower hose was also spraying out from the connectopr going into the bath mixer over the top of the bath against the wall and running onto the floor. Took some towels off the heated towel rail to stop us from slipping on the floor and notice a label saying the the towel rail needed to be earthed. this was right next to an earthing tag witch should have a green and yellow sleeved wire bolted to the tag and connected at the other end to a bare unpainted conductive surface. This is called cross bonding and allthough not required on new installations under current regulationshould have been used at the time this hotel was built. The age of the appliances appeared to have been at least 10 years ago when cross bonding was mandatory. Thankfully the electric towel rail was not switched on. if it had been and was faulty and my wife or I had touched it we could have been seriously injured or worse.
We packed and checked out at 9:50 and complained at reception with a recommendation the the room should be closed untill a through safety check had taken place. I also demended a refund. The receptionist said that the mamager was not on duty and would call me today. As we we loading luggage into the car she came out with their maintenace man who said he was a builder. He stated the had a letter saying the towel rails were safe. he should have said we have full periodic test certificates. Excuse me if I am not filled with confidence. He also said that defects some time occur. I think that damaged cups were cleaned and replaced in that state, the damaged heater was in that state before we took the room, the damaged shower hose was old and should have been noted when the bath was last cleaned. The potentially dangerous shower rail is what it is- a concern that leads me to be writing this review. Without carrying out through checks of the electrical installation using the services of an electrical engineer I cant be 100% certain this is a safe place to stay. I can be 100% certain that this is not a place I will stay at again. And no phone call from the hotel manager. The whole things smacks of a lack of customer care and a few people need to be given a rocket.
