“Good for functions - function rooms, service and food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I have been here twice now in two months for functions in different rooms and found the service and food to be good. (Not outstanding - but value for money) The owner was present on both occasions and oversees service and makes sure that any hiccups are dealt with promptly. I am comfortable with coming back on such occasions.

Have never seen so many 'terrible' reviews before on one site for the accommodation and I must admit that puts me off staying, so I have not drunk alcohol and driven home. Next time I will ask to see one of the rooms and judge for myself. There has been a refurb following the Hotel changing hands, which would be a shame if the 'mud sticks' from previous owners but I think there is an obvious top tip:

Ask to see the room before you commit to staying in it if at all possible.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you commit to staying in it if at all possible.

“Much Improved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We have stayed at the Allesley Hotel on several occasions over the last few years includeing when the on going refubishment has been taking place, our latest visit was in January this year and we have noticed a vast improvement over this time. The car park was reasonably tidy this time with no litter or bottles lying on the ground, Outside the hotel is only what i can describe as a picnic area with wooden tables etc. As you approach the hotel there are water features to greet you. The reception area is much improved, Gone is the old dirty carpet which has been replaced by marble flooring and a rather large chandelier by the door, dotted around are a few red and gold high back chairs and tables etc, and a display of asian clothing, it is obvious the owners are aiming at the asian wedding market. The receptionist was pleasant (as we have found on several occasions) and checking in was easy, However payment was requested before being given our key card, and there is a surcharge for using a credit card.
We were given a room on the fourth floor which we reached via the lift, we did notice that the rooms on this floor were still being refurbished. Our room was 415, which was clean and tidy with the usual tea and coffee etc but only a small amount of milk was left, I suggest you bring your own milk coffee etc as this was not replenished every day. The room was very warm and we had to turn the thermostat down.
There was a resonable double bed in our room which the matress was ok, with clean sheets.
There was a lot of furniture in the room which made the room feel a little cramped, a large flat screen tv was balanced on one of the cabinets which could easily be toppled over, however we did get all the free view digital channels this time instead of just three or four channels we had last year,
The bathroom was clean, clean towels were provided and one piece of wrapped soap, which was only replaced once during our six night stay, although there is liquid soap in the shower and a hand wash near the sink and two small containers of liquid soap provided.
The towels were changed most days but on a couple of occasions we were left with a two small towels instead of bath towels which were not that useful after having showers etc.
There was always plenty of hot water available all times of the day.
The room was serviced most days except the day we were only out for a short while, towels were changed and tea etc replenished, however the sheets were not changed at all during our stay.
We did notice that there was no welcome pack in the room and no DO NOT DISTURB notice to put on the door which can be a bit inconvenient.
We checked out at 10:30 am with no problem.
The hotel does seem to be run on a shoe string budget and is under staffed, I cannot comment on the food or bar as we only ever stay room only in any hotel,
While we can see a vast improvement here, the hotel still has a lot of work to do, especially on the housekeeping side of things. The staff have worked hard to improve the hotel.
We will be staying here again when we visit Coventry in the future but only at the right price, We combine our trips here for both business and pleasure.

“What a disgusting hole of a place!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We could not escape as it was heavy snow when we arrived and just managed to skid into the car park. Do not be mislead by the glitzy reception. Once you have paid you are doomed. The place is grim. The corridor decor should have warned me. We stayed in a dissapointing room with broken furniture. The 70'S bathroom suite was broken and dirty. On switching on the shower no water. The no doubt, very busy maintenance man came and with much YANKING managed to get it working but only cold water!!! Went to reception to complain and they frostily allowed us to use the next door bathroom, the toilet did not flush and when the shower was on it filled the bath. When I got out I had dark hairs hanging from my legs (not my own) arrgghhhh. Both rooms, although non smoking, reeked of cigarettes. The room thermostat flashed blue when you moved it. We were promised a three course meal for which we had paid for in advance. This was a lie! Crappy bar meal, 5 options to choose from, if you had a special dietry requirement, then prepare to go hungry. No starters available or pudding or chips. Flat drinks. The bar lady was nice but did everything.

We had to put a chair against the door as the lock did not work, We felt we needed to. The breakfast was the worst we have ever eaten, mostly raw, sausage meat was conspicuous by it's absence. I like previous people who have commented have stayed in all sorts and this takes the prize for worst ever. On leaving I informed reception and they did not even apologise just said thanks for letting them know. I despair. I was just glad the snow melted enough to let us escape. Just got home and had a very hot shower. Please do not waste your hard earned money go some where else.

Room Tip: Insist on a refurbished room. Apparently they exist, but no one we met had stayed in one

“Allesley Hotel”

We stayed at this hotel on 30th Dec 2011 as it was close to the church where we were to attend a wedding. It was a miserable experience as the hotel was mostly empty and one member of staff seemed to have to do everything. The first room we rejected as it was dirty and di not have the bath we had rquested. The second was cleaner and had the required bath but the wifi didn't work anywhere in the hotel and the breakfast was mostly uncooked (the mushroom and tomato were raw ) and the sausage was possibly the cheapest and lacking in flavour/texture I have ever tasted. In the end one can say it was relativeley cheap but I would never stay there again

“The bad reviews are all true”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

This place really is the pits. Once you get past the marble reception littered with none-working water features (and pay in advance) you get:

No cold water in sink
Dirty taps and toilet
Toilet lid that won't stay up
1 towel between 2 people
No room heating
A shower curtain that sticks to you
A killer lift
No room welcome pack
No number for reception on the phone
No-one on reception when you go down
Restaurant closed for evening meals - probably a lucky escape
Bar closed throughout stay
No hot water on day 2 - explain to staff - they shrug shoulders
Threadbare hospitality tray - not replenished on second day
Coffee made from riverwater
Room door that doesn't lock

I've stayed in hotels at both ends of the price/luxury market and can honesly state that this was the dirtiest, uncaring, broken down dump of a putrid, vile grimehole I've ever had the misfortune of breathing in. Do yourself a favour, break a window somewhere and get a cell for the night in the local nick - it'll be cleaner and the service will be friendlier too. I'd rather sleep in the car.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel
