“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I booked this hotel last minute with the booking.com. I then looked at the reviews and was quite dubious. It appears that the majority of the negative reviews were about the annexe.
When we arrived the staff were helpful, however I did ring and request a room in the main hotel but was given keys for the annexe. Luckily the lady I spoke to remembered the conversation and changed the room without question. We were asked if we required room service, however knew of some restaurants therefore declined. The grand staircase adds to the olde worlde feel with the grandfather clock and elegant paintings... Our room overlooked the gardens which was a pleasant surprise. The bed was clean, neatly made and comfy. The television was a decent size which was on the wall. The bathroom was a fair size. It was clean, and although the hotel boasts a shower there was a bath as well. The sink became blocked and, although we were told that there was no weekend maintenance was able to move to a different room, again without question.
The breakfast was plenty with choice of cereals, pastries and cooked breakfast. There was a menu form whch you could choose from boiled egg to a full english. Pots of tea/coffee and juices. One thing I did notice is that the room had a menu for room service but nothing that told you about the hotel, area or information about breakfast times...
Overall the hotel is rather nice. It does have its good points as well as not so good. I do believe that the annexe spoils it very much. A dirty white flat roofed monstrosity joined onto a Tudor building... The area isn't favourable, however once in the carpark it's like another world! The town is about 3 miles away. Fairly easy to get to but the ring road can be confusing. By booking online we actually got the room half price.

“Overall a nice stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I stayed here for 1 night as part of a coach trip to Birmingham.
I don't know what the rate was so can't comment on the value for money but overall I found it okay. My room was clean with nice lighting, the bed was very comfy and it looked quite recently decorated - I slept very well and the room was lovely and warm. The bathroom was more dated, tiles a bit grubby and something strange growing on the ceiling but shower was nice and hot and overall it was nice and clean.
Breakfast was served for our group in a separate room the next morning which was freezing cold and a bit chaotic since it wasn't self-service but cooked to order. I found this out when a breakfast arrived in front of me and I hadn't had the chance to explain I was vegetarian (so they did prepare me a veggie breakfast instead). The fried breakfast was very small and looked really un-appetising for some reason but the toast, tea and juice was good. I think these arrangements were more down to the coach company than the hotel. The staff worked very hard and seemed to be at the receiving end of complaints with nobody managerial seeming to show their face or organise things.
The bar area is large and comfy and very charming. Imagine this is good if you're staying on your own - looks like a good place to have a drink and do some work in the evening if you need to.
Would probably stay again, perhaps if I was on business in that area but not for a personal holiday.

“Very poor standard for the price charged”

Stayed here, and was in the rooms in the adjoining wing, very 1970 concrete built, old style 1980 bedroom, very standard , breakfast ok but not worth paying £10.50. Place could do with remodelling also car park lets it down. Friendly staff though.

“Great for weddings, maybe not so great for romantic stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I have read many mixed reviews on here about this place, so thought id share my recent experience.

I went to a wedding here over Christmas and stayed over in a room.

As others have said, this is a charming hotel, very olde worldy, with oak everywhere. Massive foyer with oak paneling, huge old oak staircase with antiques everywhere. Our room was just up the stairs in the old building. It looked like it had recently been refurbished, with new carpet, wall paper and paint. The bed was huge and comfortable. Had a flat screen samsung lcd telly - 32inch sort of size. The bathroom was huge, bath with shower above it. Water was hot. Windows had no double glassing and were the original ones. Room had a radiator which was nice and warm. Couple of chairs, a desk and a very creaky wardrobe which looked like it was about to fall down.

All in all I was quite impressed with the room. It was a good size and in good condition. In fact all the bridesmaids and even the bride for the wedding we were attending used our room to get ready. At one point there were about 15 people in the room incl. the photographer and there were still plenty of room to take nice photographs.

The old building does have a 70`s or 60`s styled extension on the side of it like a lot of such hotels do. Personally I thought it looked okay, it was white and looked fairly trendy compared to a lot of crappy concrete extensions you see typically.

The venue was ideal size for a wedding, we made use of the London Restaurant which was converted into the breakfast room, the room on the RH side of the foyer which is the licensed ceramony room and a room out back in what looks like a converted barn or something for the evening reception.

The bars are very small and the bar staff did appear to be a mixture of inexperienced trainees and more experienced. One girl in particular didnt seem to know the difference between Stella and Becks and insisted on pouring me a Becks each time, although charging me the Stella price. Speaking of which the prices were not cheap but I guess were typical of this sort of venue. £3.50->£4 per drink was about typical. There was however an off-license over the road and so I noticed a few people purchased a bottle of some spirit or another from there to help supplement the hotels prices.

The area itself is apparently a very dodgy area, or so I was informed by several local Coventry people, so I wouldnt suggest wandering about. As it was, when we were outside having a cigarette we were hassled by a local begger asking for money.

The Hotel grounds themselves are nice, and the carpark out front was private and safe. My expensive car was un-harmed much to my relief.

Staff themselves were very friendly and helpful and coped very well with the wedding - rushing around after everyone. Food was served very promptly and was very tasty. I helped with a lot of the setup myself and found staff again were friendly during this fairly busy process before the main event.

The wedding had about 60 guests during the day and more in the evening. During the day the wedding litterally seemed to take over the hotel, so if you were not part of the wedding I would have found it a bit uncomfortable and noisey. However, in the evening, the reception was in the back room, well out of the way. The only times I came back to the foyer I did not find any wedding guests there, so for normal guests it would have been fine. As with any venue which has weddings noise can be an issue if you are the sort of person who likes to be in bed at 10pm, so I would definately check whether there is a wedding on here the night you stay if you are concerned. As I was part of the wedding party, I had more than several drinks and had no problem sleeping like a baby, even when I left the reception party early.

For:
-----

All in all, a lovely building with lots of character, ideal for weddings and business stays. Room rates seemed reasonable.

Rooms in old quarter are lovely so ensure you get one of them.

Against:
----------

Breakfast was very expensive for what you got. Full English was quite small and I think it was something like £16 each for it. Skip this and find a cafe somewhere else.

Noisy if a wedding. Quite a distance out of town if you wanted to do shopping etc. Area is a bit dodgy, so try and park in carpark in front of main entrance rather than around the back.

Room Tip: As to stay in the old building rather than the 70`s extension if you want a nicer room, but remember...

“So very noisy!! Never again!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

I booked this hotel for its location, and overall style! On arrival I thought 'fantastic'! The main lounge area was lovely very much the look I was hoping for!
I had booked with the hotel directly so I would get the room I wanted, I told them I wanted the best possible room as, I was meeting my boyfriend there for the weekend. He is based in England, in the Army and I live in Scotland so everything had to be perfect!
I was dissapointed by the decor of the room, it did not match the style of the rest of the hotel.
Very cheap looking, why do these chains take over beautiful hotels and try and do everything on the cheap???
The room was above the very busy main road, the noise was terrible! There is some kind of 1970's attempt at secondery glazing which does nothing to stop the noise of the traffic coming into the room. However this was nothing compared with the noise of the wedding recieption directly under our room on the Saturday night! OMG this was terrible!!! We both had to cover alot of miles the next morning to get home so we needed to get to sleep, ha no chance!!!!
It felt like as soon as the music stopped the traffic started up again, we got so little sleep then had to drive 6 hours home the next day!
You would of thought the pleasent lady at reception would of mentioned the wedding when I booked the room!!! A superior double, only one of two in the whole hotel with the worst road noise I have ever experanced in any hotel! Then topped of with a blaring wedding reception going on under us!! What a nightmare!!
I would say that the staff were all very pleasent, and this is not their fault. However when we complained the next morning the manager didn't even bother to come and see us he just gave us £20 off our bill. He would of been aware how loud the music was, but didn't even make the effort to apologize in person!
I would never stay here again, and feel sad that we wasted one of our few times together putting up with all the noise!

Room Tip: Stay away from the road side and the new bit of the hotel! Good luck!!
