“Great price but not 4 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

We stayed at the hotel rom saturday 11th until monday 13th. When we arrived we paid the £15 per night to upgrade to an executive double as many people had reccommeded this on Tripadvisor. The room was on the 7th floor and although spacious was a little dated. The souble bed was two twins pushed together and did not quite meet. One was hard and the other too soft. Following an evening out we returned to the hotel at 11.30 - the room was cold. There was a plug in heater which we turned on but it got cold as soon as we turned it off. There was no heating in the bathroom and it was freezing. After a cold night we complained and whilst we were out during the day moved to a new room on the 6th Floor. What a difference. This room had been moderised and was warm. much better than our original room.

Breakfast was buffet style with plenty to chose from. Dinner on the first night was fine but not quite 4 star - dated menu and frozen chips. The staff were fine and helpful when asked .

Overall it was fine for what we needed with a good price of £96 for two nights B & B and one dinner.

If you are looking for somewhere nice to eat close by try The Garden Rooms across the road , good food and excellent serviced especially the guy from Carlow who was very helpful and the price was great with plenty of choice.

Room Tip: Pick a modernised room on the 6th floor

“Don't let the outside put you off !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Good Points.
: Staff very courteous and helpful.
: Room nice size and clean.
: Breakfast good.
: Free wifi
: Parking.£3.50 per day.
: Price £99 for 2 night bed & breakfast plus dinner for 1 night.
: Tea,coffee, hot choc and biscuit in room
: Iron and ironing board supplied.
: Location fine taxi to New Street £7

Bad Points
: We where on the 7th floor and the water pressure terrible worst shower ever. However our daughter was on the 5th floor and
the water pressure was fine.
: A little tired and dated.
: TV on the wall at the end of the bed not alot of space between bed and tv resulting in nearly hitting my head when getting up
during the night.
: Hairdryer rubbish,in fairness most in hotels are.
Would i stay again yes but i would ask for a lower floor.

Room Tip: As far as we can tell the lower floors have better water pressure.

“Poor so far”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012 via mobile

Arrival = locked car park and a ten min wait.

Keys impossible to use on doors and so far not good. Will we make it to day two?

“It's OK, but don't switch the bathroom light on during the night...”

Being originally from Birmingham, I've long been aware of the Strathallan Hotel and it's semi-iconic status within the city - because of its' position and 'circular' design - but on all of my return visits to the city of my birth, I've never stayed there. Until now.

Arriving on site and first impressions are not great as the exterior is in need of some tlc - when's an iconic shape not an iconic shape.... when it's dated perhaps? My other half - who's from Sweden and thus doesn't have my historical links with the place - certainly looked on with trepidation as we pulled up in the car.

But parking was easy (I'll come back to parking later) and the reception was a bright and warming place. The staff were proefssional rather than necessarily welcoming. Our (Standard Double) room was absolutely fine. Clean, looked like it had been recently updated, warm, flat screen TV, Wi-Fi signal receiving. So good start. The bathroom was very small though, with nowhere to even put one (let alone two) sponge-bag. We also had a moderately annoying dripping tap. One design fault here though... the bathroom door had an obscured glass panel which means if the bathroom is used during the night then light streams through the glass panel and floods the rest of the room. Bit dumb and totally avoidable.

Didn't eat in the Hotel but the restaurant "looked" fine and was certainly well attended - we ate at ASK two minutes walk away which we enjoyed very much.

Just a couple of further thoughts.

Our room was booked for two people well in advance, so why did the hotel only lay out one set of towels (hiding the other set at the back of the wardrobe)? And secondly, when the design of the hotel is partially formed by the fact that the rooms are above the hotel's own (circular) multi-storey car park I found it a little unecessary to be charged an extra £3.50 for parking. To be fair this charge was well publicised within the booking information in advance, but just a bit unecessary in my view.

“Pleasantly Surprised!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Wanted a room for a night near the Botanic Gardens where attending a Friday night function.
Concerned by a real mix of opinions in Tripadvisor reviews. Looked at other hotels nearby, but their reviews were consistently bad - so decided to give it a go!
Paid £15 extra for Executive room. Room was excellent - large and recently refurbed. It also benefitted from being on 6th floor so noise wasn't a problem. Partner not impressed by ironing board!
Receptionist didn't know where Botanic gardens were - major attraction less than mile from hotel! - and was generally unwelcoming. He also tried to charge £3.50 for car park which I didn't accept.
Receptionist the following morning was excellent and knowledgeable.
Breakfast was good - functional rather than personal, but more than adequate and staff good in this area.
Hotel looks dull from the outside, but our experience was very good.

Room Tip: Room facing outside likely to not get as hot as those facing inside (it's a circular building)
