“No hot water in the shower”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Cavalier for one night recently as we had an early flight the next morning. On arrival the person on reception duty that night was friendly and gave us information on a local gas station, etc. etc.

The room was small, but functional for one night and the bathroom quite large for a UK bathroom, although one of the bedside lamps did not have a bulb in it.

We went into the bar for a quick drink. We asked if we could have some breakfast as we had to leave very early in the a.m. and it was arranged that we could go to the building next door (that doesn't seem to be on the website).

Not a bad night's sleep overall, but although we had hot water in the sink, we never did get hot water in the shower, so just had to make the best of it. We did call reception and he said to "let the water run for a while: - which we did, but no hot water ever appeared. When we checked out, we told him that the water never got hot, he said that he was sorry and would have someone check it out - he also said they had had a problem with room 16 before.

They were helpful, but overall we would not stay there again. The hotel across the road looked a lot nicer.

  • Liked — Fairly close to the airport.
  • Disliked — No hot water in the morning.

On arrival the atmosphere at the reception desk was luke warm. The rooms appeared to be fantastic on initial viewing, but were'nt that amazing when examined further. They were clean and adequate.

Breakfast is in another building, and no one told us this. At checkin, I asked "what time is breakfast", and was told the information was in my room. The time indeed was, but the fact we had to go outside wasn't.

It's an OK place that did the job, but I would look elsewhere next time.

“Not a good experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2008

I booked to stay at the Cavalier Hotel through a web based hotel search web site. Firstly on booking it said that I would pay at the end of the stay as many of these web sites state. When I arrived for a weeks stay while attending a Show at the NEC I was immediately told I would have to pay up front first thing in the morning. Now maybe because I had turned up with 2 stand buliders and that we were all in work gear I got the distinct impression they didn't believe I would pay. So off we went to the rooms. The rooms were ok....quite large with a good bathroom if not quite finished to a good standard. The rooms do have paper thin walls which means you have to hear everything!
When I arrived downstairs for breakfast I was told payment was due immediately. They wouldn't even let me have breakfast until I paid. So I did.
Breakfast! well, you firstly have to walk outside the hotel (in the rain) through the joining hotel, outside again and into the breakfast room. The food was ok but not brilliant and no menu.
I must say that travelling around the world on business I have stayed in some top hotels and some very poor hotels so I think I have a good idea of an ideal hotel. Customer service is none existent. If you get a friendly 'hello' your lucky.
There is pretty much no bar as it is situated basically in the entrance lobby-not staffed-and with a sign saying 'credit cards only'
Really if you have to stay in a Hotel in Birmingham there are hundreds to stay at. We went to the hotel opposite for drinks and a nice pub five minute walk away for food.
When we left I wasn't even given a 'hope you enjoyed your stay' or 'have a nice day. Having spent nearly £1000 in total there this place is strongly NOT recommended.
Next year this place will not be on my list

“Improve your customer service!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2007

I stayed here for one night, booked through my company. I can't argue that the room was very nice, comfortable bed, lovely view to the garden, nice bathroom etc.

However, the level of customer service from reception staff was quite poor. I had mistakenly left some papers on the reception desk (and I knew they were there because I had turned the room upside down looking for them, and remembered having them at the desk) so I went and asked if someone had seen them.

I got a blank look the first time, and a 'no, I haven't seen them'. The second time I asked, it was only when I said that they were really important that the guy on the desk asked if I would like him to check with his colleagues if they had seen them.

After that I heard nothing. It wasn't until I had eaten breakfast the following day that another member of staff mentioned they had found them as I was getting my key.

It seems like a small thing, but because I didn't have those papers first thing, I had to call my office and find out where I was going that day, check train times etc, because it was all contained in those lost papers. I can't see why someone couldn't have come and told me they had been found the previous evening!

I just felt that no one wanted to make the effort to assist me. Perhaps that is a training issue.

Apart from that, the hotel was quite noisy in the evening (slamming doors, noise from other rooms), and then at 4am a generator came on that was so loud a fellow visitor eventually got up and complained. It was subsequently switched off, but why on earth was it running at that time anyway?!!

All in all, not a horrendous experience, but they really need to look at their customer service.

“Excellent Service, Very Clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2007

My colleague and I were hard-pressed for accommodations in February (exhibition season in Birmingham with people flooding in from all over the world) and ended up at this tiny famly-owned hotel, down the road from a TGI Friday's. All members of the staff were very friendly and accommodating, and the newly refurbished rooms are very clean, though not that spacious. The bath was pretty huge for UK standards and our room, on the ground floor, opened up to the gardens. It's about 10 minutes by cab to the New Street station and The Bullring, but the hotel sits along a major thoroughfare and the traffic congestion was a problem to us on most mornings.
Perhaps due to its size the hotel leaves one with the impression of having stayed in a welcoming, private residence - after a day or two the staff are addressing you by name and remembering your breakfast preferences. It was a lovely stay and I'm kind of surprised that nobody's written about this place.
