I stayed one (Saturday) night at this hotel at the weekend. When I checked in I was advised that, since this was the weekend, there were parties in the hotel. If there were any disturbances I should call reception (on the phone at the end of the corridor or on my mobile - there are no phones in the rooms) and they would send security up immediately.
I didn't know whether to appreciate the receptionist's honesty or to tremble at the the thought of a disturbed night. As it happens, I was in a room on the 5th floor as far away from the lift as possible and had an undisturbed night and a good sleep.
This morning over breakfast I talked to a friend who had been there two nights. She told me that there had been a fight on her floor and in the car park on Friday night and that the police had been called. I guess that is why I was warned by the receptionist about the possibility of disturbances. I am grateful for her honesty.
I sat chatting over a hot chocolate with another friend from 11pm to midnight. As we chatted I noticed gangs of blokes and scantily dressed women heading out into the night - because this hotel is close to the city centre and the rooms are low-priced, it attracts characters who like to go clubbing and getting drunk on the weekend. I thought I might have a disturbed night, but was spared, possible because I was in a remote part of the hotel.
Having said that, the room, although basic, was clean, neatly laid out, and had a comfortable, if rather hard, bed. The toilet was in a room the size of a large wardrobe, the basin was actually in the room, as was the shower cabinet. (I think the designer must have been trained in designing mobile homes.) The towels (one per person) were good quality, but the pillows were very thin (I like two pillows and would have been uncomfortable if I hadn't been able to use both the pillows provided).
The heating came from a fan unit over the door. The room was far too hot when I got into it and I had to turn the unit off. The room remained warm enough, despite the night's being frosty.
Breakfast, for which I paid a modest 3.75GBP, consisted of a choice of cornflakes, crispies or muesli, bread for toasting, french sticks, a fat-free spread (no butter), jams and marmalade, cheese, apples, bananas, and hot beverages from a machine. Adequate, considering the low price.
The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Otherwise there is no service, which is what one would expect from a budget hotel of this kind - so this is not a criticism.
Parking is a problem. The hotel's car park (4.00GBP for any period from 1 hour to 24 hours) is small and was full by the time I arrived. I took a chance and parked on the residential street on one side of the hotel - residents only from 11pm to 7am, but there were plenty of unoccupied spaces, so no resident was deprived of parking last night. Thankfully I was not ticketed, but I wouldn't recommend my solution to others. Apparently the hotel directs overflow parking to a nearby IBIS hotel.
I used this hotel because it was reasonably priced and well located for a gathering that I took part in over the weekend. I'm not sure I would choose to stay here under other circumstances, not because this is a bad hotel of its kind - it's not - but because I generally prefer something a bit more up-market.
This review would have been a great deal more critical had I been disturbed by partying and drunken guests!
