“Very reasonably priced comfortable hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We booked the £50 per night deal and had a clean and comfortable room. We stayed because we were seeing snow patrol at the lg arena. The rail station was only ten mins walk in the snow. The staff were very helpful and we had a quiet room on up the 6th floor. Although our friends stayed by air pilots and air hostesses and were kept awake with their chatter and early departure. I would recommend probably for week and there's loads to do in Birmingham. Will definitely go back when the next offer is on

Room Tip: Stay on weekend as weekends could be noisier

Thank you very much for your 5 star rating and review following your recent stay at the hotel. I am delighted to read that you took advantage of our weekend promotional rate and would encourage you to keep an eye on our website for future deals.

Please be assured that I will share your positive comments concerning the room cleanliness and helpful staff out with the teams. It always gives them a great boost to receive feedback on their service delivery.

Thank you also for your comments about the air crew. I have already discussed this with our Reception Manager to ensure we continue to allocate any early departures away from our leisure guests.

With regards to the proximity to the train station, I am assuming you mean Birmingham New Street but just to assure you that we are also very close to Snow Hill and Moor Street stations for when you return in the future.

Thank you once again
Kind regards

“Is it a hotel or office block?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Horrid reception area but other public areas nicely done. Nice to walk in for shops but would look closer to the City if wanting a place to crash after a night out. Breakfast good - reception staff could do with a refresher course in customer service and speed - painfully slow check out - 10 of us + 1 receptionist = delayed departure.

Thank you very much for taking the time to offer your feedback following your recent stay at the hotel. Like many other Birmingham city centre hotels we are located within an office area and are adjacent to the Children’s Hospital, however, we do hope that guests are pleasantly surprised once within the hotel.

Therefore, it is reassuring to read that you were pleased with the inside of the hotel, and thank you for your kind comments about breakfast. I have taken on your comments concerning the aesthetics of the reception area and will look with our team on how to improve it. With regards to the delayed check out, it is always difficult when there are 10 individuals checking out in a group together, however, I will speak to the relevant manager to see how we can speed this process up in the future.

Thank you for your feedback about our proximity to the shops, the Bullring and Mailbox are approximately 10 minute walk and Broad Street and the Arcadian not much further.

I hope that we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel in the future and encourage you to contact me direct through the hotel if you do so I can have the opportunity to meet with you and ensure you have a great experience not only in the hotel but in Birmingham City.

Kind regards

“Weekend in Birmingham”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Tickets for concert at Symphony Hall. Hotel would have been excellent if nearer the centre. 10 min walk to the Bull Ring, (ok if young and fit) but spent £45 on taxis getting around, would have liked to have been nearer to the centre, for Mailbox , Restaurants, and Canal area,No complaints at all about the Hotel or staff, Buffet breakfast was expensive at £10 a head extra. Room was very basic but good value for the discounted price we paid.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor but lifts were good.and staff ordered taxis from the reception.

Thank you very much for taking the time to offer a positive review of the Thistle Birmingham City following your recent stay.

I very much hope that you enjoyed your event at Symphony Hall and would be delighted to advise you on the easiest route around town when you next pay a visit.

We are indeed about 10 minutes (walk) from the Bull Ring and the Mailbox / canal area and I am somewhat surprised at the cost of taxis for you during your stay.

Please feel free to contact me direct should you return to Birmingham in the near future so I can make easier arrangements for you to get around town.

“Shame about the service!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

On checking in the room was much smaller than appeared on the internet. The double bed was very small, our request to change to a twin room was dealt with promptly, the room was an improvement however there was only one towel provided. The evening receptionist was most unhelpful, we requested a bucket of ice to be sent to the room but we where informed that she would give us the number to ring ourselfs even though she was hardly rushed off her feet. After several attempts at trying to contact room service we where finally told that there would be a service charge and would have to buy from the bar to get ice??!! Once stressed we thought this was ridiculous the manager then 'compromised' on giving 'free' ice however had to go to the bar to collect ourselves. I could understand if they were busy with customers but there where only two people in the whole bar/restaurant.
Another disappointment was the breakfast which was inedible; the porridge was under cooked, the full english was cold greasy given that this was supposed to be a freshly cooked breakfast. It was replace however the standard was still poor. The waiter was pleasent but we left still feeling hungry. Would not stay at this hotel again, not upto the standard of Thistles that we have stayed in in the past.

“Good location but nothing special.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Four of us booked in for New Years Eve as a special treat for my Daughter and her partner, at a cost of £115 each which covered the room, evening meal with a Murder mystery, disco and brunch.
On arrival we were allocated rooms on the 6th floor. They were very basic and "tired" so I asked for a room change and we were moved with no great fuss. However our room was already occupied when we let ourselves in, fortunately they were not in the room at the time. After getting another room on the 4th floor we found it it had been recently refurbished and was up to standard, as was my Daughters room. We also had a complimentary bottle of wine as an apology.
The Champagne and canapés were excellent and the evening was a success although the actors in the Murder mystery could have done with microphones as it was difficult to hear them with people talking around us. They ran out of Fizzy and gave us Champagne at the lower price, very generous.
Next morning we turned up for brunch at 10:30, as promised in an E Mail, to find that there was none and breakfast was over. After complaining the manager waived the NCP Car park charge which I was surprised to find was £22 for the overnight!!!
A good Hotel with a Central location worth the £38 per room currently on offer but certainly not the £115 per person we paid.

Room Tip: 4th floor rooms have been refurbished. Beware of car park charges which are high even with the 25% h...

Dear Philip

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel following your NYE stay.

I am somewhat reassured to see that our team managed to react to your requests on arrival and that the Duty Manager rectified the problems with a complimentary bottle of wine and a waiver of the external NCP charge. Most importantly I am delighted that you were comfortable in your room during your stay.

With regards to the Murder Mystery ,I have received many letters from our New Years guests who very much enjoyed the package and I will ensure your comments are reflected on by the company who provided the entertainment. We are currently planning our offering for NYE 2012 so please stay in touch so we can keep you up to date with our plans.

Thank you for your kind comments about our central city centre location and for your 3 stars. I hope next time we can get 5 from you.

Kind regards
