“Lots of character helpfull staff”

we got a good deal from a late booking web site and were very pleasantly suprised. Large victorian gothic pile in large grounds. Free wifi , good pool. Rooms do vary from modernish to period. The staff were great. This hotel appears to focus on weddings and business conferences and there were none on when we stayed so we practically had the place to ourselves which was great.

“Think again before staying here”

We stayed here as a treat for my birthday. We booked a bed and breakfast and evening meal package for one evening. We were sent to our room on the second floor. I was shocked on how dated and dismal the room looked. The carpet was very stained and the windows had so much bird mess on them. The furniture was old and rickety. We instantly returned to reception to complain and asked to be moved. The young girl asked us what we didnt like and we said everything and listed our reasons. She said that our room was one of the best. I thought she was joking. Apparently not. She showed us 4 more rooms and to be honest we had to pick one out of a bad bunch. We were told we would have to pay an upgrade fee of £25.00. What a joke. This we reluctantly agreed as the only other alternative was to go home. We would of still been charged as they had my card details. The room we chose was thick with dust. I dusted everywhere before we unpacked, even inside the wardrobe. The TV is ancient and sky was not working. The en-suite was a lot nicer than the room. On a plus point, the food was lovely and the dining room staff were friendly. The bar drinks are very expensive. The views were outstanding. On departure they tried to charge us again for our food, even though we were on bed, breakfast and evening meal. This experience spoilt my birthday celebration. We would not waste my money staying there again and I will certainly pass the word around to family and friends.

“The best time of our lives!!!”

We booked Wroxall Abbey as our Wedding venue just under 12 months ago, and were married on Good Friday (22nd April 2011). Quite simply, we had the best day of our lives, and this was in no small part to the 100% perfect service we received from the Hotel staff. Without exception, they were friendly, courteous and could not do enough to help us. Duty Manager Stuart was absolutely fantastic, and every request (although we did not have to make many as so much was done without us having to think of it!) was met with a smile and with "yes, no problem at all". From meeting Stuart at our wedding taster evening, he and the Wroxall Team have been absolutely brilliant, even entertaining us with an impromptu piano playing from Phil the Barman last thing before bed time! Everyone went the extra mile for us, and we are so very thankful.

Wedding Co-ordinator Dina has been an absolute treasure. Again, every request was dealt with promptly and to such a high standard, always smiling and friendly, and willing to accommodate all our requests, regardless of how quirky!

We had such an amazing experience - the venue, grounds and chapel are steeped in history and character, it really is a hidden gem. We have been fortunate enough to stay in some wonderful places, but Wroxall will always be the best.

Anyone considering Wroxall as either a wedding venue, or just for a nights' stay, should do so without further hesitation. It is simply wonderful.

“The Perfect Wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2011

After two years of amazing support, laughter and stress free wedding plans my Husband and I got married and had the perfect day.

we could have asked for the moon and received it. All the staff were amazing. The wedding planning team were so supportive and there for every question, emails and always on the end of the phone.

We went to visit the courthouse but did not like it. We were shown the mansion and thought this was out of our price range but they were so supportive and gave lots of advice on how to save money and tricks of the trade. We booked with nearly two years to go and did nothing for year. We were able to nip round and visit with family at a moments notice. What a truly amazing bunch of staff from the spa, front desk and waiters.

I went for my make up trial, spa trial and menu taster all on the same day staying over and having a fantastic pre-wedding visit. My Husband (who is a perfectionist) had every demand even to how he wanted the favours set out.

The food was superb and extremely delicious. My friends still talk about the meal and all the staff.

On the day of the wedding I was so nervous I could not eat, so they made me take a basket up to the room just in case I got peckish later. We had extra cups delivered because they thought we might need them. I even got a secret message to say my Husband to be was in the building and happy. Everything was perfect.

The following day we just took over. Nothing was a problem. My Grandad who is partially sighted, 84 yrs old and deaf was awake very early. My Mum found him in the grounds being escorted by a member of staff. He didn't want to wake anyone and she took the time to walk with him. Need I say anymore.

It is the perfect place to get married and is worth every penny. In fact, on reflection we would have paid more. I just want to go back……Thank you Wroxall

“Average masquerading as luxury”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2011

We went here on a 'Dance Break' and left very disappointed. The break was expensive at £500 per head and I understood that we were to stay in a luxury hotel. Sadly we only managed one night as my father was taken in to hospital and we had to leave early before the dancing had even begun.

We arrived a little late on Friday evening. The receptionist was eating, and whilst pleasant talked to us whilst chewing. We were sent outside to a marquee. It was dark, unsigned and we got lost. Got to the marquee eventually and, as no one greeted us, we sat down in an empty place. The food was poor and the wine was £3.50 Shiraz being sold for £20 a bottle. Frankly, at £500 per head, I would have expected perhaps a glass of wine with our meal.

Breakfast the following morning was buffet style and poor. A huge urn of the most unpleasant coffee I've tasted in a while set a tone that nothing was able to rise above.

Later that morning, we had to leave early and my wife went to explain at reception. We were told that the organiser 'Emma' would be informed. Amazingly, 'Emma' was apparently at Friday's dinner but made no announcements nor acted in any way as a host let alone an organiser. Everyone there was fending for themselves.

After explaining the circumstances for our departure we turned to leave. The receptionist's parting words were to hope that we'd have a 'Great weekend'. My father died on the Monday.

The service, food and treatment was NOT luxury and to claim that it was is just wrong. I had hoped that I might perhaps get a message from the 'organiser' to express some sympathy that we'd had to leave early and forfeit nearly £1,000; such an action might be considered good manners.

In response to the review posted, it is with disappointment that we, the hotel, have learnt of the guest’s complaints via this medium. Whilst we partly understood the reasons for the guest’s early departure, it is a surprise that the guest has not contacted us directly to discuss the other issues noted.
Prior to this review being posted, a letter had already been sent to the guest and at this point we were not aware of the extent of the tragic circumstances which caused their early departure. The letter gave options we could consider in terms of inviting them back to one of our other Dance Breaks to be held later in the year.
To give a brief overview of the event, the first evening starts with drinks at 7:00pm for dinner at 7:30pm. We held back dinner to 7:45pm in the hope that the guest would arrive, but then in the interests of the other guests and food quality, we had to continue. The host was on duty throughout the evening in the Marquee and in the Mansion looking after guests and arranging the whole event. The guests did not mention any problems that night, hence she was surprised to learn of the issues after their early departure. Nevertheless she did demonstrate not only good manners, but good grace and consideration, by following up with a personal letter when she heard of the guest’s departure.
The Friday is the informal introductory night of a full dance weekend through to Sunday with Anton du Beke & Erin Boag; ‘Stars of Strictly Come Dancing’ personally running the dance workshops with Photos, Autographs and Question and Answer Sessions as well as a Magnificent floor show with Champagne Reception and 5 Course Gala Dinner on the Saturday night. The price for all of this including two nights accommodation, Full English Breakfast, Lunch and morning and afternoon refreshments starts from £439 and all elements of pricing at Wroxall is competitive. Unfortunately due to the tragic personal circumstances we are now aware of, the guests had to leave just as the Dance Weekend was really starting. Missing out on the whole weekend and the included Champagne offered at the Gala Dinner. The comments and references to £500.00 and a glass of wine need to be seen in the full context of the event as illustrated above.
The comments are in marked contrast to other guests who had nothing but praise for the food, hospitality, service and whole weekend for example, “Firstly thanks again for the fabulous weekend!, and “1st of all thanx a million for another fabulous weekend sorry we missed you to say goodbye!” The other issues raised have been addressed and answered. Wroxall Abbey Estate is committed to excellent guest service and takes pride in its high level of guest satisfaction. We are keen to respond proactively to any adverse guest feedback and the hotel is in the process of contacting the guest again to discuss these issues and of course pass on our condolences to the family in what is a difficult time.
