I and various members of my family and I have stayed at The Old Fourpenny on many an occasion. A couple of times this has been over Christmas and being able to stay Christmas Even/Christmas Day is very useful as one of my family lives around the corner but can't manage to accomodate all of the rest of us. The Old Fourpenny then becomes our overflow!
The motel style rooms, which are at the back opposite the car parking, are the rooms I have stayed in. They are always clean, big enough, with ensuite facilities, drink making capability and are very warm with heating that really pumps out (it has been thick with snow in Warwick on two occasions I have stayed).
The owners/staff have always been very welcoming although we havent needed to bother them much except for at breakfast. The breakfast service has always been delicious and served with cheer and politeness. I have had breakfast there on Christmas Day twice and its to a great standard and wonderful service as usual, even though you might expect the service to be less on that day. There is a full english breakfast and variations seem totally acceptable, if you want to leave off the black pudding and chose different eggs or just have bacon etc, and there are cereals and toast (the offering may include more than that but those are the staples I have always had). When I have stayed in the motel style rooms, it has always been quiet enough even though the Old Fourpenny Shop has a lively pub in it, which is located at the front. As you can imagine, the first time we stayed we wondered if Christmas Eve would be awfully loud but it wasn't! Also there is free parking in the courtyard where the motel-style rooms are, which in a town like Warwick where most houses have street parking, it's a brilliant thing. However If you don't have one or don't want to bring a car then the train station is a 10-15min walk down the road and of course the town centre is just about 5 mins up the road and town centre entrance to Warwick Castle is about the same.
I would recommend staying at the Fourpenny for the reasons above and also because of the cost as it is very cheap for town centre accomodation, in my opinion. Also, remember I have stayed at Christmas when I am sure many hotels would be at premium but I am sure the Old Fourpenny's tariff has been basically the same as the rest of the year.
Well done to the owners and staff, who keep putting on a good service for us year in year out!
