“Quiet, cosy and friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

I stayed at the Old Rectory whilst on business in nearby Warwick and found it absolutely delightful. It is very much a B & B, with no evening meals available, but there is a comfortable lounge with a selection of books and an 'honesty bar'. How often do you find that?

The Old Rectory is run by Christine and Chris who are friendly, welcoming and cannot do enough to help.

I stayed in the Shakespear Suite, which has a massive and comfy 4 poster bed, tasteful period furniture and a large bathroom with spa bath and shower. The room was warm, spotlessly clean, had the usual tea & coffee facilities, free wi-fi, which worked well, and TV, although small and with only with the basic 5 channels.

The location is great in as much as it is seconds from the main road between Warwick and Stratford, but in the quiet, secluded and totally unspoilt hamlet of Sherbourne. I didn't notice any noise from the main road although, depending on the room, it could be an issue in summer with windows open.

The only down-side to the location is that Sherbourne has no pubs or restaurants, the nearest being in nearby Barford, where the Granville Arms does superb meals. This is an easy and safe 20 minutes walk in daylight but a bit tricky after dark.

Breakfast is continental only, unless you pay extra and book in advance, but you get a good selection of cerials, toast, fruit salads, yogurts, cheeses and cold meats. If you've eaten in the Granville the night before that's all you're likely to want!

The prices are perhaps a bit on the high side, given the limited facilities, but this is an expensive part of the country and, for someone travelling on expenses (but with a set budget) I certainly didn't feel cheated and have paid similar amounts in the area for a far lower standard of accommodation and service.

I can appreciate that the Old Rectory is not everyone's cup of tea, but I would certainly stay here again and would thoroughly recommend it for the lone business traveller who just wants a quiet and relaxing night's stay, provided they are willing to go out for their evening meal. It would also be great in the summer for couples who want to visit Warwick or Stratford and are happy to take a stroll out for a meal and drinks in the evening.

“not worth it for the money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

We chose this 'hotel' for our first anniversary. It's not a hotel, just a B&B. The suites are just rooms with four poster beds. Don't bother with the cooked breakfast, although nice enough 1 sausage, 2 bacon, 1 egg, 2 small mushrooms and half a raw tomato is not worth the extra £9.95 each. The service provided by Christine was lovely but didn't make up for the room and breakfast costs. The hotel is right by the main road which wasn't too noisy but not quite the secluded hotel we expected. We also got asked what time we were arriving, getting to breakfast etc so felt we had to turn up when expected which spoiled the romantic nature of the weekend a bit. Spa bath was nice but the hand held shower was a pain, couldn't wait to get home and have a real shower. Not the worse hotel experience, but definitely not the best, we wont be going back.

“Not as advertised, don't be conned !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2010

Beware this lodge although nice and quaint comes with a sting in the tail. The lodge is not advertised as a non smoker and there are prior warnings and no signs in the room to this effect.
My wife not finding an ashtray went to the bathroom opened a window and had a cigarette.
We were fined £50 by the owner in the morning on checking out.
The Shakespeare 'room' is advertised as a suite and a suite it is not, it is a bedroom room with a bathroom there is no seperate lounge. When i pay £110 for a nights rest (not including the £50 'fine'), i expect a nights rest, not creaking floorboards and hearing the next doors room occupants conversation.
Breakfast was nice. There is a Hilton Lodge nearby, I later checked this out ad it was far superior and a lot cheaper.

“Romantic Hideaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2009

Had a romantic weekend away with the wife, staying in the Shakespeare Suite. Cosy room dominated by the oak four-poster bed which was very comfy. Tea/coffee in room, small TV hung on wall.
Large ensuite with toilet, washbasin and bath with hand-held shower from mixer taps.
To call it a suite is going some, it's an ensuite bedroom!
The house is lovely some parts dating back to the 17th century, so pots of character with exposed beams everywhere.
Christine the proprietor is very welcoming freely passing on information when asked. For our evening meal she recommended the Granville Arms @ Barford, in a neighbouring village as there is no pub/restaurant in Sherbourne. This was an easy 20 mins walk on level pavements to a cosy eatery which served superb food, well recommended.
Breakfast on weekends is full english, continental on weekdays, served by Christine.
I think it's a bit much calling it a hotel - but it is a good B&B.
It is right next to the A 46 but we were not disturbed by road noise, however with no air-con in the bedroom, in the summer the windows will need to be open and so may become an issue.
