“Great home base for the Cotswolds, stroll into Stratford-Upon-Avon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2007

There are so few places where one stays while traveling that truly feel like home. Places one doesn't want to leave and, when one does, can't wait to return to. From the minute we first saw the tasteful, hand-painted sign and turned into the Chestnut-lined drive we knew we had arrived at just such a place. Traveling through the tunnel of trees the grand house emerges at the end of the orchard alongside.

The location couldn't be more convenient to Stratford-Upon-Avon, this literally being the first farmhouse accommodation outside of town on the way to the Cotswolds. The house feels very welcoming and one can see oneself "at home" instantly with a baby grand and sofas in the lounge, well appointed large rooms with large beds to accommodate all easily. (We are both tall and appreciated this a great deal.)

After our first visit (in 1984) we have returned to XOH (Cross o' th' Hill) many times year after year in different seasons and have stayed in the various rooms. We have always found the proprietors to be warm, welcoming, pleasant and very helpful with suggestions regarding how to make the most of our visit to the area. Still if, as I did the first time I was there, all one did was stay around the house, rest, eat, read, paint, and stroll into town for a little Shakespeare... one couldn't ask for a more pleasant holiday.

With only 3 rooms (each with their own private bath or shower) the house never feels crowded even when full. The low-fat version of the “English Breakfast” should please both the British and visitors from other lands with its emphasis on fresh, local, low-fat and organic ingredients when possible. I am vegetarian and was always offered plenty of healthy food for breakfast. Last time we were there there were fresh fruit smoothies offered, too!

We have found Cross o' th' Hill Farm to be the perfect place, again and again, from which to explore Warwick, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and the beautiful gardens, houses, villages and other sites of the Cotswolds. Stay here and you won't be sorry.

“Good location, large comfy bed and a healthy (!) full English breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

We recently stayed 1 night (as a short stop over) at Cross O'th Hill Farm and had a very comfortable and pleasant stay there.

It is ideally located for a visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon - quiet and far away enough from traffic but only about 12 minutes walk across some fields into town, right beside the river Avon. (and a very pleasant walk too, in fine sunny weather.)

The main house is a lovely old restored famhouse - very large, with a mix of old period pieces and contemporary artworks. There is a lovely old grand piano in the lounge which guests may play and a croquet lawn for a game, if weather is good.

Our room was a large clean ensuite with a very comfortable superking-size bed and nice soft pillows. The decoration was mainly clean, simple lines (no chintz here!) with a large antique closet-like piece of furniture in the room as the main centrepiece (after the large bed). There were also tea/ coffee / biscuits facilities, a small flat-screen TV and 2 small dressing tables (one on each side of the bed). Our room window faced the croquet lawn and a balcony (which is probably accessable from one of the other rooms).

There was an ensuite bathroom with a roll-top bath and toilet (No shower in our bathroom but there was a shower-head.). Water-pressure was good and no problems with running out of hot water when taking a bath. Lots of towels, handwash and a bar of soap provided - but take your own bubblebath / showergel along if you think you prefer that to just a bar of soap. Again, the bathroom was tastefully decorated with clean, simple lines.

We had a good breakfast in the breakfast room, under a chandelier with opera in the background. There was coffee/tea, cereals, fruit, organic yoghurt, a homemade smoothie (we were given a banana and victoria smoothie), toast with preserves and honey...and a healthy full English breakfast (as advertised on their website). Yes, believe it or not, it WAS actually relatively healthy - we had grilled tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, grilled bacon (trimmed of all the fat and rind) and a poached egg on toast... and we could hardly see any grease on our plates!

Decima & her husband are very friendly and helpful hosts who are a credit to their B&B. (They helped recommend several nearby places to visit and dine, which we really enjoyed. )

“Wonderful - we are so glad we came to stay”

We were in two minds about coming to Stratford because of the floods but we are so glad we did.
We are both seasoned travellers but I can't remember the last time we were welcomed as warmly as we were at the Cross on the hill farm by Decima and her lovely husband. The room was lovely, elegant and homely. The communal breakfast eaten with all the other guests at the main table in the dining room was a pleasure too.
Absoultely fabulous is all I can say. Well done.

“Great B & B”

We booked two rooms here & found the experience excellent. Great rooms (only 3 available), super breakfast & very pleasant owners. The farm is very old, but has been tastefully renovated. Our room was huge & had an en-suite with bath. Our friends had an en-suite with walk in shower & a single room attached. The third room uses a bathroom across the hall. You can walk into Stratford from the farm (12 mins) but this was flooded because of the recent floods affecting the area. It was reasonably priced & we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

“The perfect boutique B&B”

A dream of a place! Just a 12-minute cross-field walk from the centre of Stratford, you're a world away from the tourists and chintzy hotels. This grand Victorian famrhouse is beautifully decorated; the grounds stunning (look out for the bunnies hopping about morning and evening). It really is incredibly tasteful and, it goes without saying, wonderfully clean. All this and a you get a delicious organic breakfast including a smoothie made from all of the fruits on the farm! It's incredibly reasonably priced too. The innkeepers of Stratford really should take note...
