“A Hostel not a Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2011

I stayed for 2 nights in June and the only good things I can say about this 'Hotel' is that it is a great location for Stratford and that the bed linen and towels were spotlessly clean. Unfortuatley they were the only things that were, everything needed a good scrub and in some areas there was a musty smell. My room and had not been vacuumed or dusted properly and on returning late afternoon of my first full day I had to ask for my towels to be changed and tea/coffee etc to be refilled. The service was basic, I only saw 2 members of staff and they did not seem to realise that breakfast should be warm , and that it is not nice to site down to breakfast with dirty plates from previous guests still on the tables( and were still there on my way out of the Hotel half an hour later.) I was very dissapointed as it was a real downer on my stay in Stratford .I will NOT be going back.

Hotel could be OK but neglected. Have stayed in smaller rooms though. Staff sit around on laptops all day speaking a foreign tongue. English breakfast was very small, poor quality and cold. Staff very noisy, with TV,s blaring until turned midnight. They are up early and talking/shouting to each other and a lot of noise coming from kitchen at 6.30 in morning and the smell of grease permeates the whole building. The place needs a good clean, as does the 6 month pregnant, totally disinterested waitress who served the breakfast on morning 1. We declined breakfast on day 2 ! Only good point is the location which is quiet (apart from the staff) but close to town/attractions etc. There is free parking in adjacent streets from 4 p.m. Sat to 10 a.m. Monday, if you can find a space.Paid £132 for 2 nights. I blame myself for breaking a cardinal rule of always booking the best I can afford. This place has put me off going "budget" in the future. Avoid.

“Overpriced, Grubby and poor.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

My partner and I stayed here on a Saturday night recently we went for the Marlyn (rebranded the 'Aurora' recently )because it was pretty much the only place with a room available at fairly short notice. It cost £80 for an ensuite room, which is what I would expect for a very good quality B&B, sadly however, this was not one of these. The room was ok but not that clean, the bathroom was a bit grimy and tatty in appearance and the 'double' bed was actually two singles put together.
The staff were polite enough, but didn't seem to really want to be there. The central heating seemed to be on all of the time, so we slept with the window open - I was woken up at around 2am by the staff loudly talking and smoking outside, and it took a while to get back to sleep.
The breakfast was poor, a sparse selection of cereal, some orange juice, a Scandinavian option (4 slices of cheap ham and cheese) and some cheap white toast. My partner's full English was late and rather mediocre - I've had better in my local greasy spoon cafe.
The arrival of the owner with fresh bagels and over enthusiastic attempts at conversation was not enough to improve our visit in any way.
The only high point of the place, was the location - slap bang in the middle of Stratford and minutes away from the centre. I found myself jealous of my partner's parents who were staying at the Travelodge down the road!
We would definitely not recommend this place

“Absolutely Awful!!!”

Arrived at the hotel on a Friday night. First impressions weren't too good. On arrival into reception, the first thing to greet us was not a pleasant owner but rather a overpowering musty smell. The entrance looked shabby and unwelcoming, we were left standing around waiting to be greeted. After calling out, a dishevelled looking young man appeared out of a back room. He then led us up a stained carpeted staircase to our room. We use room in a literal sense because technically it was. The room was to be honest, grubby, dirty, dated and those were the positive points. The bathroom door would not close and on closer inspection we found it never would as it had been fitted completely wrong. The door handles on the room and door bathroom were falling off. The sheets on the bed looked like they had not been changed from previous guests. The bathroom shower was disgusting and its appearance leaved a lot to be desired. I have been rained on harder than the water emitted from the shower. The carpets were grubby and stained in the bedroom and little things like 2 pots of milk for a week-end stay were unacceptable. Bearing in mind we stayed for two nights, our room was not cleaned or new towels provided. The cups in which we had a cup of tea Saturday morning were left dirty and not collected, hence we were unable to have a further drink during our stay. In all of our week-end stay we failed to observe another guest and unless we went looking we were also unable to locate our so called hosts. Price wise, this hotel is no where near competitor offerings and we would not even stay here again if it was half the price. Stay here at your peril!!!!!!!!!
