We have stayed at this hotel before and it never disappoints. It is centrally located, with free parking if you are a resident, a bonus. If you stay at the Premier Inn the car park is away from the building and there is a charge, so it is worth factoring the price of car parking before making your visit.
We usually request a room in the older part of the building as it has character. If you stay on the top floor the staircase is steep and there is no lift. Rooms at the front also have the charm of the church clock striking on the hour, although this ceases through the dark hours!
A number of reviews have stated that on a "deal" rate you do pay extra if you have a full breakfast or say choose 3 course meal. You can work this out for yourself or decline the full breakfast. The staff did not say this when asking if you would like a cooked breakfast, they assume you know.
The open fire was lit just outside the restaurant and it is lovely to get the high seats there and sip a brandy to thaw out after a walk around town. We also appreciate the pre-theatre dinner deal whereby you choose your meal in advance and if it includes a dessert you have the latter on returning from the theatre.
Our room was warm, spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was cold as there was no radiator in it and being tiled it adds to the chill factor particuarly during a cold spell. We left the bathroom door open and put the shower on for a few minutes before using. Room 313 is above the bar area and you do get the noise filtering into this room during the evening, but that is part of the experience being situated in the Tudor part of the complex.
We will return again later in the year.
