“Thumbs Down for Breakfast Bag”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

We have stayed at this Innkeepers Lodge before, but now it has been taken over by Travelodge. The room was still very clean and comfortable. The only difference was that instead of going over to the Falcons Nest for continental breakfast, a breakfast bag is now delivered to the room each morning. This breakfast bag consists of a very small bowl of cereal with milk, a small croissant, a small muffin and a small portion of jam. Small is the operative word! The muffin and croissant were rather dry. We stayed for 4 nights and the breakfast was exactly the same each day. I was lucky in that each day I got a different flavour of jam! We noted that a number of breakfast bags were being collected unopened by the cleaners, so I don't think they are too popular.
With regard to a previous reference to the 24/7 garage and shop being opened, I have to say this was not a problem for us at all, and our room faced in that direction. In fact, it was handy for newspapers, etc.
We will definitely use this Innkeepers Lodge again, but I think we will pass on the breakfast bag!

“New meaning to 'Breakfast in Bed'”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

We were disappointed to be informed prior to booking a night recently at an Inn Keeper’s Lodge/Vintage Inn (Falcon’s Nest, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne) that they had dispensed with the normal good quality continental breakfast served in the dining room for a ……Breakfast Bag.

Alas our disappointment turned to utter disbelief when the small plastic package appeared at our bedroom door. The contents were: 1 btl concentrated orange juice (strangely dark in colour), 1 Rumblers cereal set with pathetic folding teaspoon and long-life UHT milk, 1 very small squashed doughy croissant, 1 chocolate muffin and a jam portion. There was no plate and with three people in our room and only one chair we were obliged to eat this in bed. The cereal – all 18.7g of it (a normal portion of Special K is about 30g or Weetabix 37.5g) wouldn’t satisfy a toddler let alone an adult. The tepid long-life grey coloured UHT milk tasted awful (like fully skimmed milk) and the croissant was almost inedible. As for the chocolate muffin, Brits don’t normally eat such things for breakfast, this is merely an American idea which should stay in the USA.

We expect this is probably a cost cutting exercise but one which will prove to be a guaranteed way to get rid of customers. We certainly won’t be returning unless the accommodation provides a proper breakfast as they did previously. It would be better to reduce the cost of accommodation and not provide food at all if it is going to be this pathetic. TOTAL FALSE ECONOMY in what is otherwise good accommodation. The photos speak for themselves!
