“Just don't”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed recently on a trip to newcastle. Complete disgrace. Staff were rude with one guy in particular being extremely condescending and grumpy. Having worked out that we each owed 46 pound for the room we asked him if we could pay individually to which he said no and gave the impression that to even suggest so was a complete inconvenience. Upon trying to go to the advertised 'bean bag room' I was told in no uncertain terms from another staff member that I wasn't allowed go there for reasons undisclosed. The room was very poorly ventilated, the shower flooded the floor of the room and the beds weren't even made when we arrived. There was no prop for the shower head which meant we had to hold the shower head with one hand while cleaning with the other which made us feel more like we were in a prison than a hostel. Food and staff in the adjoining bar/'restaurant' were atrocious. The two bits of food I got were obviously just blasted in the microwave for a few seconds which begs the question why a panini took twenty minutes to be served. The music in the bar after dark was obnoxiously loud which forced us to shout at each to have a conversation.

Overall, avoid. I can understand a couple of the misgivings but the shower situation and the attitude of the staff were just unacceptable. Any communication with them was degrading as they made us feel like a complete nuisance to them which resulted in us completely avoiding their presence for the rest of the trip for fear of upsetting them. Book somewhere else, ANYWHERE else. This place is a kip and the staff are just horrible.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for also taking the time to write your review here on Trip Advisor.

I am sorry to hear that you, like Phil below, found a member of our Newcastle team unfriendly. Once again, this is very unusual as the person you are talking about is very friendly and very good at their job. Weekends can be a challenging time for the team in Newcastle but all customers should receive the same high levels of service from the team. Once again sorry if you found this not to be the case.

Your shower being broken is not acceptable and I sincerely apologise for this.

Thanks again,

William

“Rooms Fine Staff Not”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed in here weekend of Feburary 10th with a group of 8 lads. We all shared the one room which was a fine room had two bathrooms which was very handy and the facilities of the hostel were generally good and it was very clean.

A big negative for us was the attitude of the staff during the day. We had a number of dealings with them in reception (leaving bags in, checking in, paying for late check out ect) and not once did we have a positive dealing with the guy working there. On the final day the girl working there was extremely friendly but the two guys who were working on the Friday and the Saturday left us all feeling that we might not come back if we were to stay again as they were just not interested and whenever we were there it felt like we were disturbing them.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for taking the time to write your review here on Trip Advisor.

Overall, it sounds like you had an enjoyable stay in Euro Hostel Newcastle but you felt that one member of the team was not as hospitable as others. This is really surprising as the team member you refer to is consistently complimented on his levels of service and friendliness. If you have found him to be unfriendly then I am extremely sorry about this as all of our guests should receive the best possible service at all times.

I do stress again that it is highly unusual for somebody to complain about the team in Newcastle who do a great job in looking after people staying at Euro Hostel Newcastle.

Thanks again,

William

“first time good, second time bad”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

ok so as a group of 12 lads we needed somewhere that would take us and we decided on euro hostel in july 2011 and it was a really good enjoyable time, the was nothing negative to take from that trip except the food is as it has just been put in the microwave on order.

so again me and the lads decided to take a trip to newcastle again and automaticaly we all agreed on euro hostal so one of us booked it expept this is when the trouble began, a few days after we had booked it we had an email saying they had overbooked and we did not infact have a room to stay, we rang up and eventually spoke to someone with a clue and realised that email shoudn't have gone to our group, then days later we where told that we had to pay the bill in full straight away overwise we would not have a room, yes we all payed fair enough we thought. we then arrived on the day at the time stated to check in, we where left waiting to check in an hour after we where allowd to but then we thought ok we'll sit in the bar and relax from the long journey we had to get there. when we got our rooms there was a room of 8 on the 3rd floor and a room of 4 on the 2nd floor. now a room of 8 lads on a weekend away is bound to be noisy who ever you are. we soon realiased that we were sharing the 3rd floor with a massive group of exchange students many very young. while getting ready to go out we had the music playing on speakers not excessivly loud, we where told to turn it down which we did. later on we came back from being out and we were in the room chatting when security burst in almost knocking my mate over shouting and threatning us saying we would be thrown out. that night this happend 4 times. but on the 2nd floor and even the 3rd floor there were rooms playing music and being very lound into the early hours of the morning, nothing was said or done to them all the attention was pointed towards us. we spoke to the manager the next day who was not understanding and said they were too full to move us rooms and 1 more complaint we are out on the streets. the second night before we went out we were targated again by the security for no apparent reason

i haven't even mentiond the bloody pillow cases and the shower which filled the bathroom floor with water.

very unhappy with our second stay after having such good memories of our first stay so people if you choose euro hostal i hope you share the first experiance we had and not a repeat of the second stay.

and eat out of the hotel unless you want to use the panini as a door stop!!!!!!!!

Hi There,

Thanks for posting your review here on Trip Advisor.

I am sorry to hear that your second stay in Euro Hostel Newcastle was not as enjoyable as your first.

All efforts are made to keep people staying in a group close together. Of course this is not always possible as groups vary in size and need differing room types. Regardless of which floor people are staying on, it is the Euro Hostel team’s responsibility to ensure that everyone staying in the property has an enjoyable time whether that be a quiet weekend away, a study break or any other reason for staying in Newcastle.

I am sorry if you found the team to be too firm when endeavouring to keep noise to a minimum. As I am sure you can appreciate there is a balance to be struck when needing to be firm but also being fair and groups of lads are not always the most receptive to being told to be quiet and to respect other guests.

Thanks

William

“Good option in Newcastle”

This nice hostel in Newcastle is in a reasonable walking distance from the train station and I had no problem at all on finding my way to there. They have a pretty nice lounge, which works as a bar for people that are not in the hostel too. I felt secure there and the place is really tidy and clean. Prices are really reasonable and staff is there to help you 24h a day. Had a pretty enjoyable time there.

Hotel is very clean and the beds comfy with the hotel only being a 10 minute walk to the centre.Would recommend to anyone staying in newcastle if you want somewhere clean cheap and basically somewhere to get your head down. Reception staff werent the happiest . Overall i would return

Room Tip: go for a private dorm well worth the money
