“excellent hotel - few issues”

we stayed this weekend at the grey street hotel for two nights. Upon arrival, the receptionist, a young lad, was very friendly and approachable. The room was bigger than expected as from previous comments we assumed it would be smaller. However, i agree it was not boutique as it sells itself to be
It was very clean and had a number of good facilities including the separated bathroom on another level to the bedroom. Plus the bathroom was very large!!
However, the major issue with the hotel was the buzzing humming sound which was constant throughout the night, we believed it to be coming from the outside vents/generator. This was very annoying and disturbed our sleep. Additionally, even thought the bed was very large it was two single bed pushed together and at times felt like you was sinking in between.

Overall, value for money was excellent and the location was perfect. Would recommend this if buzzing does not annoy you ha!

“Quite Gem in City Center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

A 5-10 minute walk from the train station, a 5-10 minute walk to the bridges, a 5-10 minute walk to the castle, the big churches, the main shopping areas, and of course, the bars; yet so quite, we could almost hear a pin drop. Hotel staff was pleasant, toiletries and complementary tea and coffee were nice.

2 downsides: no wifi available, bathroom/shower was disgusting - there was clearly a leak and the entire floor and wood 'paneling' covering the bath was warped and moldy - not a way to start the day feeling clean...

“Great location for restaurants and shopping all within a ten minute walk.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Rooms were clean and warm. Could do with a fresh coat of paint on the walls and the shower is very tiny, the bathroom door handle was broken and would just come off and the curtains didn't fit the window, therefore a huge flood light shone into the room at about 1am.

Great location. Couldn't have picked better. For food, shops and night life.

We even ordered room service at 1am and it arrived promptly!

Would stay here again.

“Great service, tired rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I paid for this hotel through an online discount scheme. We stayed for 1 night in a deluxe room with a bottle of prosecco. The cost was supposed to be £215 but I only paid £69 with a £40 supplement for staying on a Saturday night. I would have felt cheated if I'd paid the full amount! The hotel doesn't have it's own parking but an NCP carpark is 2 minutes walk away. The check in was very quick and easy with a pleasant receptionist. We were in a room on the 3rd floor and the lift to get there was minute!! There are some original tiles from what was probably a very grand building in it's heyday on the Walls in the corridors. The room was clean, good facilities, massive comfortable bed, tv and DVD player. The decor however was quite tired. The bathroom was basic but the bath panel had clear signs of old water damage, shelf above the sink was also water damaged and scratched. The shower head was too high (it was fixed about 8-9 feet above the bath) not very powerful and the water was cold!!
The hotel was by far not the worst I've stayed in, it was clean, in a great location, prompt friendly service and a very comfortable bed but not worth the money.

“Great value for money for the central location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

From checking in to departure the hotel staff were first rate - particularly the lady at breakfast!

Spacious room and we heard absolutely no noise at all - and we were at the front of the hotel - the room had triple glazing.

Huge bed and very comfortable nights sleep!

Highly recommend as location is central and it is great for getting out into Newcastle for the night and so close to the shops and metro.

Would stay again for sure!

Room Tip: Room 24 is lovely!
