“Average at best...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

First impressions of the hotel are good with a smart reception area and trendy bar. But then things go downhill fast. My room was small; alternately hot or cold, but never right; the bathroom was pretty grim and everything felt a good few years past it's best. It was not an environment in which I would have wished to have spent more than one night (incidently, the noise from the hall and from people walking back to their rooms from the lift areas was terrible - probably the worst I have encountered - it needs some decent soundproofing desperately)!

Breakfast could have redeemed things (to a degree) but again it was average at best - just like the hotel really! Overall, I'm sure that there are far better places to stay in Newcastle for the money (the room I stayed in cost £104 - very poor value for money).....

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay with us.

I am really sorry that you had a less than favourable experience whilst you were staying with us. The hotel has recently gone through a redecoration and refurbishment programme and we have had some great feedback about the changes made, particularly about the reception, bar and bedrooms.

Please accept my apologies for the noise in the corridors. Unfortunately, like in many hotels, some guests are not considerate of other peoples rest and continue their conversations at a volume level which causes a disturbance to those resting. The night team at the hotel are very conscious of this and if they are informed of noise by guests or if they notice a group of people making excessive noise then they do ask them to be more considerate of others and this usually does the trick. Unfortunately if they are not aware of the noise then it can be missed.

I was really surprised that you did not enjoy your breakfast experience. We receive many positive comments (including several on Tripadvisor) about the quality of food and the service offered within the hotel. Please be assured that I will monitor this with a spell of spot checks to ensure that we are maintaining standards as expected.

Once again, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused and I do hope that you would consider staying at the County should you return to Newcastle in the future.

Kind regards

“Small room, no view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Small room (only just bale to class as a double) tiny bathroom. No view at all (frosted glass window that was painted open - looked out onto a brick wall 3 feet away so had to have all the lights on even at 9am) Cold room as the radiator was past its best. Only two overworked staff at breakfast - had to ask twice for orrange juice jug to be restocked, had to ask twice for coffee. Nice public facilities and there has evidently been a refurbmishment, but my room was depressing - I could have put up with a small room had it not been so cold with no view/natural daylight. All in all only just average as a result of the room and service at breakfast (to clarify the staff were good but they were seriously overworked) Good location just opposite the station, but there are many better hotels in Newcastle for the same price.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for taking time to provide me with feedback following your recent stay with us at the County Hotel.

I was very sorry to learn that you were dissatisfied with the bedroom that you were allocated.

As our hotel was built in the late 1800’s, room sizes differ throughout the hotel from the large and lofty to the small and compact. Unfortunately we do not have the uniformity of the new builds of today, but this adds to the charm and character of the building. It sounds as though you were allocated one of our inner facing rooms which look out onto a light well. We only have a handful of these rooms in the hotel and in all honesty, a lot of our guests prefer these rooms as they are very quiet. You will be pleased to note that we are currently in the process of redecorating these rooms to give a lighter and brighter feel. All of our rooms are graded on size and are priced accordingly from the lower priced single rooms which are usually the smaller rooms in the Hotel to the higher priced executive rooms and junior suite which offer lots of space, high ceilings and lots of original features

We do have a Guest Relations Manager available 24 hours a day – I am sure that if you had advised a Manager of your dissatisfaction at the time, they would have tried their best to resolve any issues there and then in order that you could enjoy the rest of your stay with us.

I am pleased that you found the breakfast service staff to be good. We try our hardest to ensure that there are sufficient members of the team around to cope with breakfast volumes, but there are occasions, particularly when there are large groups in the Hotel, when breakfast can be busier than expected should they all decide to come down at once, which I believe to be the case on this occasion. As you will note from previous reviews, this is rarely mentioned by other guests and the majority have had a very enjoyable experience.

Please accept my apologies fir the dissatisfaction that you faced and I do hope that you will choose to come back to the County should you return to Newcastle

Kind regards

“Weekend stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This hotel was a pleasant surprise to us. Situated very close to the Metro and the city centre. The standard of the hotel was good and room was nice. Service was good.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you very much for taking time to provide fellow travellers with feedback following your weekend stay with us at The County.

The team and I have worked very hard on the physical appearance of the hotel and the service which we offer our guests. I am very pleased that you found both the hotel and service to be good.

As you mentioned, the location of the hotel is ideal, being literally two minutes walk from the mainline rail and Metro platforms – as well as within walking distance to the shops and other city centre attractions including the world famous quayside, Baltic Arts Centre, Sage and Metro Radio Arena.

Thank you once again for your kind comments and we look forward to welcoming you back to the County in the very near future.

Kind regards

“Great 3 night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Pleasantly surprised how nice this hotel is - excellent staff and good food. We had a very large room at the back of the hotel but our friends were at the front and thought it was quite noisy. Perfectly placed for getting around. Will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for your feedback. We are really pleased that you were pleasantly surprised how nice the Hotel is. The team and I have worked very hard recently on the service and facilities offered and its good to receive feedback such as yours.

The location of the County is second to none being directly opposite the train station and in the centre of the city – this also brings with it city noise, however as you mention, our rear facing rooms are quieter than those to the front of the hotel.

Thank you once again for your kind comments and we look forward to welcoming you back in the very near future.

Kind regards

“An excellent evening”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

It has been a couple of years since I was last in the hotel and I returned last night for a dinner with 80 other guests. If you were looking at the book cover then the hotel lobby would be this and the very clean and welcoming entrance is not just a front. The staff were excellent and the food was perfect. Some large events you find the food does not live up to much but this was top notch.

If you are looking to book a wedding, dinner or event then I would recommend it.

I know the door staff will change but the gentleman on last night could do nothing but smile what a jolly chap he was.

Dear Reviewer

I was really pleased to learn that you noticed a big difference when you returned to the hotel recently.

The lobby area was completed in January 2011 and shows off the wonderful original open staircase and makes a stunning entrance to the opulent wood panelled Mozart Suite on the first floor. I was also very pleased to note that you found the staff to be excellent and the food to be very good.

We have recently revised our wedding package offerings and produced a new brochure giving ‘brides to be’ some ideas of how our function and event rooms can look on that special day. As well as weddings, family events such as birthday’s, anniversaries, private dinners and christenings are also very popular at the County. We have been specialising in events for over 100 years!

Thank you once again for your kind comments and I do hope that you will visit us again in the very near future.

Kind regards
