“Copthorne Hotel, Newcastle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Used the hotel for a one night stay to go to the Metro Radio Arena and it is only a 5 - 8 minute walk to get there so it's very handy. Unfortunately, our oppinion of the hotel was mixed. This was based mostly on the 'faded' and 'past it's best' condition of the room but to be fair to the hotel they indicated in a note from the Manager that they are due to refurbish the first floor this spring. The cost of one night (£110) was too expensive in comparison to the poor decore of the room. Pity as we had a room with a good view overlooking the River Tyne. Car Parking on site, breakfast and staff were very good but they were let down by the shabby bedroom decore and we won't considering returning to this hotel unless they refurb. Hotel ideally situated for access to the town centre or walks and attractions along the Tyne river eg. Baltic Centre.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the River Tyne have a good view and are further away from the road.

“Visiting friends in Newcastle”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

The room we were allocated 110 was supposed to be a twin. It smelt musty on arrival and had a settee bed as the second twin bed - Not to worry were were only there for the night and not planning to spend a large amount of time in the room - Have stayed in this hotel before - over ten years ago now and it was okay back then - looks as if the rooms could do with a total refurb! Old, tired and outdated comes to mind. Carpets and furniture careworn and not much TLC - Good points the day time reception staff. Bad points - interconnecting room when we had a drink sent up to our room and my partner and I were simply talking apparently the person in the adjoining room complained - So I spoke to the night manager and said I was probably making more noise making this phone call to you than we have since we arrived. Mentioned that we never requested an 'inter-connecting' room with just a two-ply door separating the quest in the next room - Good job none of us snore! ! He didn't see my point and hung up - LOL! Somebody else mentioned on here that he can be quite rude Either way - found the hotel not up to scratch and wanting. Although it's right on the river - There are better priced and better facilitated hotels in Newcastle. Will find a better one next time

Room Tip: Make sure they allocated a room without an inter-connecting door and the have two proper beds in em...

Picked this hotel because it was 5 minutes walk along the river to the Metro Radio Area. It's four star rating is well deserved. Helpful staff, clean, tidy, fab location, £5 per night for car parking was very reasonable. All together fabulous.

Room Tip: They all face the river, so go for any.

“Really good hotel, well worth the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Before I visited this hotel I was abit worried, as I had read many reviews on here, but I was gladly surprised to find out that it was actually a very nice hotel.

Something that had worried about me was the complaints about the noise from the metro. Although we weren't in the closest room to the metro line, we weren't that far away and the noise really wasn't noticeable. As I live in a city myself I can only think that these people that said it was unbearable must live in the remote countryside, its only like a lorry going past your house, something which I barely even noticed unless looking out the window watching it go past. Another thing you have to think about is that you definately wont get any closer to the quayside/city centre without getting noise from general city noise, so its swings and roundabouts really.

The view from the room is absolutely excellent, with all rooms having a full length window with views of the river. Although it wasnt particularly modern, after reading the reviews I was worried that we were going back to the 1970's. It actually wasnt bad at all, I mean how many people have been to a hotel without those awful carpets? But really, what does a carpet matter. The room was clean and spacious, comfortable bed, tv, fridge and kettle. The only thing I would say about the room is that there was only one socket on show, which was quite far away from the mirror. Not a big deal but as a female, with straightners, dryer and curlers it can be an issue. I ended up pulling the desk out a bit and unplugging a lamp to do my hair.

I have to agree with others that I did find that the room was a little cold at night, and the heating only really churned out cold air. But I am, as we say in yorkshire a very nesh person, and my partner didnt feel cold at all.

As for amenities, there was plenty of parking spaces, costing £5 for overnight parking which I thought was reasonable. The pool area is clean and a good size, the changing rooms were clean enough although the only point I would say is there are no private changing areas, which isnt a major thing but just a little thought. All corridors and the lobby were nice and clean and decorated nicely.

The staff are absolutely exceptional. Unfortunately I cant remember the ladies name at reception, with a short light brown bob, but she was particularly helpful. I always went to her if I had a query and she would go out of her way to find out information she didnt already know. She had inside knowledge on the local area and I was really very grateful for all her help.

The only other complaints I saw were in regards to the breakfast, which unfortunately I cant comment on as we didnt eat there. However, about a minutes walk down the road is a lloyds bar, where we got 2 full english breakfasts, a tea and orange juice for £8 so would definately recommend there.

Overall this hotel is a really nice hotel, it isnt perfect but the things that arent are quite trivial that I dont know why people bother to complain. We had a great time in Newcastle and didnt get chance to do all the things we wanted to in one weekend! Would definately revisit this hotel if we were to go back.

Room Tip: Rooms a little higher up, from 3rd floor onwards have a better view, but try to stay away from rooms...

“Great staff, nice location but it’s freezing cold!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Spent one night last week on business. My room was somewhat dated but was of good size and had an excellent view over the River Tyne.

The rooms were well equipped but equipment (the hair dryer and tea/coffee facilities) were merely functional. The bathroom was clean except for one or two places where grouting needed attention. However, the bed was very comfortable. I managed to use wi fi in my room with no difficulties (at a £5 charge).

The big disappointment for me was the room temperature. It was freezing. Once I contacted the room service, I was quickly provided with two oil filled radiators but it took many hours for the room to heat up. I ended up staying with my overcoat on!

The best thing about the hotel was their staff. They all were friendly and helpful. Emma at the reception is a real star – It was her exceptional service during my last visit that made me want to come back to Copthorne again. – Thank you Emma!

(I have rated the hotel very good but think it is just around the border line)

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms closer to the train lines.

Many thanks for your constructive feedback following your recent stay with us. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay overall. The bedroom comfort system is in the process, as we speak, of being completely upgraded throughout the hotel, with issues having been experienced in a number of bedrooms during the current cold snap. This is being conducted in conjunction with a number of areas of refurbishment, including new carpets and televisions. Your comments with regard to the high standard of guest service received were really appreciated, and are what we are all about as a hotel. I hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back again soon.
