Before I visited this hotel I was abit worried, as I had read many reviews on here, but I was gladly surprised to find out that it was actually a very nice hotel.
Something that had worried about me was the complaints about the noise from the metro. Although we weren't in the closest room to the metro line, we weren't that far away and the noise really wasn't noticeable. As I live in a city myself I can only think that these people that said it was unbearable must live in the remote countryside, its only like a lorry going past your house, something which I barely even noticed unless looking out the window watching it go past. Another thing you have to think about is that you definately wont get any closer to the quayside/city centre without getting noise from general city noise, so its swings and roundabouts really.
The view from the room is absolutely excellent, with all rooms having a full length window with views of the river. Although it wasnt particularly modern, after reading the reviews I was worried that we were going back to the 1970's. It actually wasnt bad at all, I mean how many people have been to a hotel without those awful carpets? But really, what does a carpet matter. The room was clean and spacious, comfortable bed, tv, fridge and kettle. The only thing I would say about the room is that there was only one socket on show, which was quite far away from the mirror. Not a big deal but as a female, with straightners, dryer and curlers it can be an issue. I ended up pulling the desk out a bit and unplugging a lamp to do my hair.
I have to agree with others that I did find that the room was a little cold at night, and the heating only really churned out cold air. But I am, as we say in yorkshire a very nesh person, and my partner didnt feel cold at all.
As for amenities, there was plenty of parking spaces, costing £5 for overnight parking which I thought was reasonable. The pool area is clean and a good size, the changing rooms were clean enough although the only point I would say is there are no private changing areas, which isnt a major thing but just a little thought. All corridors and the lobby were nice and clean and decorated nicely.
The staff are absolutely exceptional. Unfortunately I cant remember the ladies name at reception, with a short light brown bob, but she was particularly helpful. I always went to her if I had a query and she would go out of her way to find out information she didnt already know. She had inside knowledge on the local area and I was really very grateful for all her help.
The only other complaints I saw were in regards to the breakfast, which unfortunately I cant comment on as we didnt eat there. However, about a minutes walk down the road is a lloyds bar, where we got 2 full english breakfasts, a tea and orange juice for £8 so would definately recommend there.
Overall this hotel is a really nice hotel, it isnt perfect but the things that arent are quite trivial that I dont know why people bother to complain. We had a great time in Newcastle and didnt get chance to do all the things we wanted to in one weekend! Would definately revisit this hotel if we were to go back.
Room Tip: Rooms a little higher up, from 3rd floor onwards have a better view, but try to stay away from rooms...
