“Disgusting in every aspect. Scabies ridden bedding.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Vastly overpriced and poor, shoddy furniture and bedding.
Got into the room and noticed holes in the walls, cigarette burns in the carpet and in the bathroom. Sat on a chair and at 8 stone, didn't expect it to collapse. The bed seemed fine and comfy but what I later learned is that it contained scabies mites. One very embarrassing trip to the doctor later confirms this. Noise levels from other residents were very loud. Seems it is party central. We left early as we got no sleep. Will never ever use this hotel again and would strongly recommend nobody else does either

“Carlton Hotel Newcastle”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

During our UK trip we were in Newcastle three times and stayed at three different hotels- the other two I rated as excellent. This hotel was a similar price at 81.60 pound for the night but was greatly inferior and well overpriced. The George next door is only 60pound and may be in far better condition. The hotel is situated in the Newcastle suburb of Jesmond and is 7minutes walk from the metro rail station. The room was tired and needs a lot of work, It was not secure as the old sliding window didn't lock and was close to a fire escape. There was no shower curtain and the receptionist didn't seem concerned when we pointed this out. The bed cover was ripped. In the bathroom the tap top was broken. The buffet breakfast however included in the price was nice.

“Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

At £40 for a single room, there has to be better for similar or less. The hotel?? Malmaison it is not. Barely adequate - would think that £20 would be about right. I wondered how many of the "couples" in the dining room were actually just on away days from their wives/ husbands. Tip1; if the other person in your affair brings you to this hotel; get a new lover. On the upside it was pretty clean in my visit and I've stayed in worse ( anyone who complains about this should try one night in the " euro hotel" in harrow. Now THAT is shocking.

“You're not paying for the Hilton”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

I'll admit I was worried. I was in Newcastle for the Great North Run, so needed to be able to sleep. Having read some of the reviews on here, I started to have second thoughts.

So the decor is a bit jaded, there were some cigarette burns in the carpet and some marks on the wall, but I wasn't going to perform surgery or eat off the carpet, so that didn't bother me. There is a bar along the length of the building, but that closed at about 11, so didn't keep me awake.

The bathroom was clean, the shower worked, and there was free wifi.

All I needed was somewhere close to the city centre where I could sleep. The Carlton met these criteria.
