“Ok stay, good and bad points”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here in January, as we drove up to the hotel we were quite impressed by the front it looks like a lovely old country house, the rear and entrance of the hotel is very different! the reception area is decked in a nautical theme but looks as if it has been put together cheaply with up and down confusing stair cases and sailcloth, the carpets were stained and looked like they had not been cleaned for a while, the receptionist was very polite and helpful and check in was quick, we had been allocated "cabin" 230 and cabin just about sums it up, the double room was the size of a postage stamp, the room was fairly clean although some of the wallpaper peeling off in places, the view out of the window was of a strange building at the back of the hotel that looked like a gym/conference centre, there was a bedside unit on one side of the bed and the bathroom door on the other, no storage space whatsoever and the mirror was just propped against the wall, the safe was on the floor underneath a hanging rail as no space for a wardrobe, the tv was a nice flatscreen but a pain in the butt to work with the remote, certain channels had no sound and a lot of black and white fuzzy screens in between each channel. The bathroom was clean but noticed black mould and a few stray hairs in the tiny shower cubicle and you get supplied with a tiny bar of handsoap and a small bottle of shower gel, no shampoo etc so if you have forgotten anything there is a price list in the room and you can ring reception for it. We went down for dinner and were given the choice of bar or restaurant - you can eat the bar menu in the restaurant if you wish so we did this, we were the only guests dining that night, the food and service were very nice and could not be faulted, drinks are quite expensive here though.
Got a reasonable nights sleep but the walls are paper thin and had other guests slamming doors every two bloody minutes or could hear the other guests moving around in the room below and talking. We didnt have breakfast so can't comment on that, overall we did enjoy our stay, the staff are all polite and helpful and we were lucky enough to have got a cheap deal for our stay, I would have been rather disappointed if we had paid full price though as have stayed in other De Vere hotels which have been much nicer

“Dont let other reviews put you off”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Myself and my partner stayed at Barnksome Place for one night on Saturday 21/1/12. I had stayed at DeVere Venues before so knew what to expect but was slightly worried once I read a few reviews and saw the rather grim photos on this website.
We paid an excellent offer price of just £29 for the room for one night. Yes the strange ships stairways added onto the back of the old building are a bit odd but I didnt find it offputting.
The girl on reception was very helpful. Pointed out all the facilities and offered to get someone to help with my luggage. The car park is not right outside reception but its less that one minutes walk up a path.
We stayed on the first floor in "cabin" 120. This has a lovely view out the front of the house with a nice big window. The room was lovely and warm. Clean and with everything you could want (tea and coffee, flat screen TV, free wifi, room service menu, ironing board and hairdryer). I have added photos on here of our room as the only pictures showing up to now are the rather grotty ones that had made me a bit worried about booking this hotel!
For those not familiar with De Vere venues they are used as conference venues and corporate team building places during the week. This venue is also used for weddings.
We didnt eat in the restaurant as we went out but we did drink in the bar and I didnt find it overly expensive for a hotel (£7 for two pints of Becks lager).
The only negative is that the rooms are not very sound proofed as when we were going to sleep the people in the next room were having a few drinks and chatting and it felt like they were in the room with me! Also some of the doors could do with some WD40 as they creaked like mad!
All in all for £29 I thought it was superb and would definitely visit again. This is the 3rd DeVere venue I've stayed at and they are all different but quality of rooms always very good. Complimentary toiletries and fluffy white towels.

“Lovely setting, well the front anyway”

I recently stayed here on the night of my sisters wedding, which took place here and went very smoothly and was very well organised by the staff at the hotel. That side of things was excellently done. The hotel is almost surreal. The drive to the hotel up the lovely wooded road (areas of which need resurfacing), past various styles of older property then revealed is the wonderful old building set in lovely grounds when the trees open up. Then you see the reception, which indeed has a nautical feel which is at odds with the front and the rear of the building is best not talked about, it is almost like the embarrassing relative you try to keep out of everyone's view, but of you read the history of the hotel you will understand why it is here. Our room was fine, tastefully decorated and quite modern. Not massive, but adequate and we had our 4 YO son on a camp bed on the floor. We were above the old main entrance which the photographer likes to use for that "looking down at the wedding guests photo". Bathroom was dated but serviceable. Foodwise, wedding food was very good, breakfast was a buffet which again was very good, hot and regularly stocked up. We didn't have a main meal here but other people in the wedding party did and were very happy. Overall, the staff are attentive and polite and food we had was good. If we didn't less that a mile up the road I would have no problems staying here again

“Nice surroundings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We stayed for one night here. The hotel is made to look like a ship. The interior is quite outdated but ok. The reception staff is friendly and helpful. We didnt eat in the restaurant but had food in the room. The menu was like a bar menu and we didn't get what we wanted from the menu and the quality was not that impressive and not that cheap either. Overall it was ok.

“Ahoy from De Vere!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

The hotel has an interesting interior featuring a naval theme. It can seem quite obscure when it is unexplained. The lobby area is a maze of staircases and sail cloth and can seem a little bizarre in comparison to the exterior. The staff explained that the village of Haselmere has strong connections in naval history; hence the decor throughout, which put into context, makes the stay feel charming!

The rooms (cabins), however, are modern, clean and warm. We stayed in the older part of the hotel overlooking the front of the hotel - very pretty view of the green. Newer parts of the hotels do not have the same charm.

There is a great lounge with a large open fire and sofas to relax in on an evening. As we were staying in December, there are lots of festive decorations and a large Christmas tree. Drinks can be ordered via tray service and can be charged to the room.

The staff were consistently helpful and friendly and informative.

The price of the room varied on different websites so it is worth shopping around. There was a large party of us staying at the hotel each with the same room (incl. breakfast) - the price that we each paid varied by 50% which is frustrating when we all had the same service.

Room Tip: The rooms in the older part of the building are very nice. Make sure you shop around for pricing!
