“Lovely rural stay not far from the urban bustle.”

Visiting from the U.S., I wasn't quite sure what to expect -- after all, privately-owned hotels haven't had the greatest of reputations in the states over the past few decades. It did, however, have good proximity to London as well as roughly equal driving to Dover and Wincanton (both on my itinerary).

I couldn't have been more pleased by what I found. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating, and are very happy to address concerns and any questions. My room in the inn proper was quite clean and comfortable and offered one of the best sleeps I've had on holiday in years. Sure, the television has only basic license fair, but who goes on vacation just to watch TV?

Breakfast was delicious and more than adequate for an active day up to a late lunch. The bar itself offers a small but interesting selection of local Surrey draughts at prices not much higher than one expects to pay in the U.S.

The village of Peaslake is quite lovely and quiet -- perfect for a relaxing stay, but also within half an hour of Guildford and an hour driving to London (though I personally recommend taking the extra half-hour and £10 to take the train from Guildford to Waterloo unless you're not actually planning to park anywhere while you're in the city).

Overall, a fantastic stay, and I look forward to visiting again on my next trip to southern England.

“A great hideaway in the middle of Surrey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

5th trip back to this no fuss inn. Good food, accommodation is simple, and comfortable, it is like being in a time warp in the 60's. Great place to stay with dogs, no one seems to mind. Parking can be a bit tricky unless you get there early.
It is quite hard to find, a maze of roads and lanes, and the Sat Nav doesnt work too well in the sleepy hollows of this part of Surrey.

Room Tip: Garden rooms a must if travelling with dogs, the back door of each room opens out on to a large gard...

“Experience not the same as the glossy brochure”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

The beds were comfortable, the staff were friendly, the breakfast was plentiful and delicious but that was where any similarity to the experience depicted in the website ended. On arrival we were given our keys to 'a garden room' which is a nice way of saying 'a damp, dated, motel style room out the back with a bathroom that is falling apart'.

The website says free wifi in all bedrooms which is simply untrue. The wifi signal could be detected in some areas of the garden but not in our 'garden room'.

We left disappointed because The Hurtwood Inn promised a lot and delivered little.

Room Tip: Ask for a room inside the hotel, if not available, stay elsewhere.

“Very peaceful, relaxing setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

I stayed here for three nights while attending a meeting in Guildford. My room was in the main building. It was clean and very quiet. I do hope that during the next renovation they remove the carpet from the bathroom and put in a conventional shower, but other than that I can think of no complaints.

The hotel had a very nice large and comfortable lounge area that was great for sitting in and relaxing during the evening. The breakfast was very nice and served quickly each morning.

What was most fun was the atmosphere of the area itself. The hotel is situated in a small, rural village obtainable by very narrow country roads. Across the street is a country store and a small bike shop, surrounded by several nice homes.

I found myself wishing that I could stay longer. If I am in the area again I would definitely consider staying here.

“Time Warp”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

My colleague and I ended up in one of the attached challets to the hotel. Although the exterior location is very hobit land (lord of the rings) the interior is much more 1950 george and mildread. Food is expensive and not that great. Rooms in the summer still have the linger of damp. Duvets are not provided only a old brown blanket, matterss was over soft (old) leading to back ache. Bathroom in challets is useable, but not somewhere you would want to linger or unwind in a deep bath due to mold. Whole place looked like it could do with a good paint. Furnishing were newish, however stains on chair seats ment not wanting to sit on them with anyting nice in case stain came off on clothing. If you into the back end of nowhere with no luxary and no frills then this is ideal, however for a romantic location advise taking a picknick and some back support for sleeping. 4am wake up call from delivery man each and everymorning as he drags his trolly right past the challet windows clanking his way to the back door. At breakfast expect a long wait, cold plates and not much.

Room Tip: Take a sleeping bag for warmth
