“just okay - there are better choices in Guildford”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I stayed 1 night in the Mandolay after having tested a couple of other hotels in Guildford. Rate was 110 GBP including breakfast.

The hotel is one of the bigger properties in Guildford. Public areas have been refurbished and look up to date and well decorated. The hotel has a rather large bar/lounge area and a decent sized restaurant where breakfast is served. It does not feature any recreation areas though (gym or such). Parking can be tricky as limited space is available (don't know if it's free of charge).

Most of the rooms are not refurbished and vary a lot in size. Overall look'n'feel of the rooms is below average of what you get in Guildford. There is hardly any decoration and the furniture certainly got some wear and tear. Considering 110 GBP is an above average rate for Guildford - rooms certainly are disappointing. Cleanliness is okay. There is free wi-fi in the room, complimentary bottled water and free coffee and tea making facilities.
Weakest point about this hotel are bathrooms. They can hardly be called clean and desperately need an update. The sink is way too low and very small, you only get a tiny little mirror and close to no amenities. They look more like a clinic or hostel bathroom than what you would find in a decent business hotel. Certainly not an atmosphere where you wanna enjoy a bubble bath and relax. There are however more than enough towels available.

Breakfast is okay: it's a buffet with a limited choice of cold and hot options. No cooked breakfast is available.

All in all - I would not necessarily recommend this hotel: there are loads of lovely smaller options available in Guildford for the same price or less. Yet if for any reason you have to stay here: it is an okay experience that does the job.

“Ok, but some issues, good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

First signs were not good at the Mandolay, some very confused check in folk until a manager found our booking. We had booked an executive room, but this turned out to be exactly the same as our friends room. The 'executive' desk was basically a side table, not enough to put a laptop on! Not worth the extra money.

Rooms were newly renovated and very nice, some character, worth going up in the eves. Lots of stairs to get up though! No other issues with the room.

We were late back, and there were some issues getting back in the hotel as reception wasn't manned and the door was locked!

Did not eat, but the bar was shockingly overpriced. The parking we used would not be suitable for a larger car either, but was free.

“Rude and Penny grabbing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

I am a frequent business visitor to this area and disburse about 10k USD annually on this hotel, because of the convenient position in relation to my UK office. This is no longer going to happen. I am fed up of the poor service in particular the breakfast service. I found service staff to be untrained in common courtesy, and really penny pinching making a scene about whether they should serve a latte at breakfast or not. Really embarrassing for my guest.

Room Tip: avoid the high floors as they do not always have service staff to deal with the luggage.

“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Stayed here on a Sunday evening at a very good rate - hotel was very quiet. Staff friendly. Room was clean and comfortable, good TV but bathroom rather dated. Good free parking. Conference centre was good, food as expected (average).

Only negative feedback - my room was at the back overlooking the rear garden and car park, it had big French windows (nice), but there were no net curtains, so if the heavy main curtains were open, everyone could look into my room ...

Room Tip: If you are worried about security, don't get a ground floor room at the back!

“Money spent on public areas, not rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Mandolay is one of not many central hotels in Guildford so I have used a couple of times before getting a rental flat for my commutes from Scotland.

First impressions are very good - they have spent a great deal of money and effort on the entrance, the bar and restaurant areas. Well done on a great looking contemporary fit out. My only real negative is the attention spent on the rooms I've had - very uncomfortable beds, and then a reasonably disappointing breakfast. However, all it took was a poor choice of breakfast sausage to make me give that comment - a slight improvement in breakfast ingredients might change my opinion entirely.

A good choice hotel though in a beautiful town.
