“So disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We used to live in Guildford and admired the hotel so when we visited for a family party we thought this would be the luxury place to stay. We paid a lot of money for a 3 night stay and our room was such a disappointment. It was a very poor experience; the staff were surly on our arrival, our room was a long and convoluted route from the front desk in a sort of modern-ish area behind the old hotel, with horrid old windows overlooking the side alley. The shower didn't work at all, the basin taps were not even connected to the basin, and the divan base of the bed was old and dirty. We paid an extra £5 (between us!?) for a cooked breakfast upgrade - this was a first - and had to argue with the waiter that we had booked it! He spent ages on the computer screen trying to find out if it was true! When we asked if we could be moved to another room we were told they were full and then put the phone down. We had planned to invite members of our family over to see 'the little piece of history in the town' that we'd booked but in the end were too embarassed to do so. It was all very tatty and run down. Perhaps there are some good rooms in the hotel, but we didn't get one!

Room Tip: I can't help with this as I didn't see any other rooms.

Thank you for choosing the Angel Hotel, I am sorry that your stay didn't meet with your expectations and that you found various issues throughout the duration of your stay.

Since your stay, the hotel has undergone a considerable update in customer service, cleanliness and maintenance. Many of the staff you would have met have moved on, and in their place, properly trained individuals with a passion for the hotel and service now work.

We do offer an upgrade to a 'Byron Full English Breakfast' from the standard continental offering, this is now priced at only a £2 surcharge.

It would be lovely to welcome you back for you to experience the changes we have made, including sample our fantastic menu in the new restaurant. Please feel free to make contact me with if this might be something you would consider.

Regards

“Excellent location and lovely food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Location is great, right on high st, managed to park in car park under shopping centre opposite hotel so only a few mins walk. Room was large and clean but could do with abit of an update but as we got the room on a great deal it wasn't a problem but wouldn't want to pay the full rate.
Had our evening meal in their newly opened restaurant where the food was very good, had a drink afterwards in the crypt wine bar which I really liked.
Overall would stay again if got a deal on the room and would recommend dining in their restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at back of hotel as quieter.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the hotel. Your comments are important as a tool to help us improve what we do.

We're so glad you enjoyed the new restaurant, and your after-dinner drink in the Wine Bar.

We are still in the process of renovating the rooms at the hotel, and hope to have them finished by the time you next visit. Please keep an eye on our website for special offers coming in the near future.

Kind Regards

“Not so peaceful as expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

Went in for a quiet morning coffee, which was excellent, but spoilt by a couple of women using the place as if it was their office. Constantly on the phone and speaking loudly. The staff did nothing to stop this and I only saw them buy one coffee. I feel that someone should have been brave enough to think of the majority of other guests.

Dear guest,

Thank you for choosing to have your coffee with us. With so many coffee shops in Guildford, we feel privileged to have been your chosen spot.

I have spoken to my team regarding what I deem to be acceptable levels of noise from guests and patrons so that hopefully this won't happen again in the future. I am aware of the people you are describing and nothing is more off-putting when you're trying to read a paper or have a quiet conversation.

Thank you for providing me with this feedback so that I may attempt to improve your experience next time.

Kind Regards

“Pants”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011 via mobile

My boyfriend and I had a suite for new years, how disappointed are we. There was no glass on the shower door, paint flaking off. Room was dusty and smelly, ( I have stayed in rank accommodation before, but fit for purpose.) we ordered food to be delivered to our room from their restaurant, only to be told they haven't recived an order and was I sure?? There was a small flap with a knob on it as if it was a small window, it was a hole in the wall that led to a plastic pipe??? Sort it out folks, I work with the public and would NEVER brush off my clients.

“Just fantastic, forget the rest!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Everything about this place oozes charm and style but all in a very understated way. It's apparently been around for over 600 years and although it has been modernised it still keeps it's old world charm. I'm seriously impressed, there are so many faceless corporate hotels springing up in Guildford- they might have all the mod con's but they just lack character and service.
The wife and I had a fantastic meal in the restaurant as well, again surrounded by old paintings and stylish hangings. I can't remember what I had in the end (the wine list is very good, to good :) ) but it was delicious. A nightcap in the crypt wine bar, also part of the hotel, was the perfect end to a really good day night.
We only stayed one night as we were visiting friends but I'd seriously recommend this lovely hotel.

Room Tip: The bar downstairs in the basement is just like being in a different world with a fantastic cocktail...
