“Don't try to get served in the hotel bar”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I stay in this hotel for about 6 weeks per year on business trips. The rooms are fine although some are dated which accounts for the rating of 3 points.

We tend to work quite late on these trips and regularly return to the hotel at 10-10.30pm. Therefore it is normally too late to go out to eat. So we regularly end up in the hotel bar lounge area, which is supposed to be an area where you are being waited on at your table and where you can order food until 11pm. Except that the waiting staff go out of their way to ignore you preferring to focus on cleaning and tidying up and preparing the restaurant for the breakfast service. We regularly have to wait 15+ minutes before somebody takes our order and even then we quite often have to actually flag somebody down or ask them to come over. Once we have managed to place an order the next problem is that the kitchen regularly runs out of items on the bar menu (a menu that changes infrequently)...the likelihood that the kitchen has run out of something increases the later you arrive and as this is a fairly generic menu I get the impression that running out = has been put away and will not get out tools or food items again to start cooking now.

As ever there are exceptions and one waitress stands out as being extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful but by and large people make it clear that they resent you for requiring service at that time of day. They are however happy to charge the service charge on everything.

I was most concerned to read your review regarding your experience in the Lounge Bar area of the hotel, particularly as you are a regular guest with us. I have since spoken with the departmental manager concerned and you should experience much improved levels of service on your next visit. Please do ask for me at Reception next time you are staying as I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you personally.
Thank you for your feedback and my sincere apologies for the dissatisfaction experienced on this occasion.
Kind Regards

“Very average customer experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

I have been to this Holiday Inn on many occasions. I have never stayed here. I just come during the day as its a useful location for me to meet colleagues, do various calls...

It's fine. it's a Holiday Inn so what do you expect.

Having said that - there is a little booth where they make coffees and all the waiters seem to hide in it. If I was a manager there, I would immediately see that most tables have to go to the waiters to actually get anything - drinks, food, the bill...

They also charge for wifi, which other Holiday Inn's don't charge for.
My wireless dongle only works on the tables near the exit.

Food is fine - I have a thing about sauces in sachets. But its fine

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your experience at the hotel. I really value your feedback as it will help me to improve the level of service we currently offer. We will shortly be undergoing a soft refurbishment of the Lounge/Bar service area and the Lounge Pantry (little booth) will be closing with all staff located "out in Front" and guest facing. Please do ask for me next time you visit the hotel as I would welcome the opportunity to meet you in person.
Kind Regards

“Over Priced drinks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

Stayed at this hotel for 1 night after an engagement/birthday party. Despite room being booked for a private function, the bar closed at 11pm. The main bar closed shortly afterwards and after several protests opened but only served one drink before closing again. Very poor service especially as we were residents. Drinks are very expensive and not all brand names.

Thank you for your recent review regarding your stay at the hotel and your attendance at an Engagement/Birthday party. I was concerned to learn of your comments and will be discussing them with my Management team. The Function bar would normally close at the end of the evening so I am surprised that it closed early at 11pm unless this was at the request of the organiser. I will certainly be following up with my team. The main hotel bar will close at 11pm if the hotel is quiet however drinks can be served 24 hours a day to residents so I apologise if this was not the case.
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your views with us which we do take very seriously. Your comments help us to improve our facilities and the service that we offer. I do hope you will stay with us next time you are in Guildford

“Excellent Friendly Staff”

The hotel staff at the Holiday Inn Guildford were absolutely Excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The food was value for money however the drinks prices would deter me from staying again!!

Thank you so much for your recent review. I was delighted to read your comments about the staff and the hotel. I was however concerned to read that the bar prices would prevent you from returning so please do get in touch. Our bar pricing is set centrally but I will be forwarding your comments for review.

I do hope we will see you return to the hotel next time you are in the Guildford area.

“Good value where it counts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

I stayed with the Holiday Inn at Guildford for a few weeks recently. On the whole the rooms were reasonably heated although the aircon was not consistent between rooms where some worked and others did not. Room availability can be patchy (even for a platinum PCR holder) and prices vary wildly depending on time of year and peaks. Check in and front of house staff are outstanding, the most notable of which being in the restaurant where some of the staff have the balance of customer service vs. intrusion just right. Speed of service ranged from really good to really bad (where time of eating and the number of big parties played a big part). Buffet food is excellent, if you like Indian, a la carte is pretty good and some of the dishes have a nice inventive twist. Post re-Fresh, the rooms were still a little tired. Rooms were noisy and most notably those with a party wall door. In almost every room I have stayed in (especially adjoining rooms with door) you can hear next door's TV and standards of maintenance range from really good to very poor (suspect a maintenance programme is underway and the variation is as a result of some rooms being fixed in turn). The pool is a real find, well maintained and all facilities spotless, the gym has weak air conditioning so if you exercise hard, expect to get hot! Bar was great, some of the best examples of the Holiday Inn "Can Do Promise" and customer service, clearly the general manager leads from the front! Bar snacks a little limited and the quality is so-so (not bad, but average and acceptable). Phone signal is poor and like most of IHG you can buy internet but this isn't really a substitute for the installation of the £1,000 of signal booster equipment which most of IHG's compettitor's are installing. Definitely recommend Guildford Holiday Inn, the people are excellent, the general manager is one of the best I have met, the rooms are a little tired and the food is pretty good.

Room Tip: Avoid room numbers in the 100-120 range (by the Gym) and those at the top end of the 200's as th...
