“Don't waste your money, this place is a complete dump!!”

I stayed here with my daughter a few weeks ago. I asked for a twin room but was told there wasn't one but I could have 2 doubles at the special rate of £96.00. When we arrived the house smelt strongly of curry which didn't bother me too much. We were shown to our rooms and unbelievably my room was a twin room!!! The rooms were filthy. The towels virtually bald and frayed at the edges. The toilet was black and didn't flush properly. The main boiler for the house was in my en suite. There was a bedside lamp but no socket to plug it in. The floor hadn't been hoovered for weeks. There was hair everywhere and even a dead wasp on the bathroom floor. My daughter's room which was meant to be a double was the size of a broom cupboard. Needless to say as soon as we were up in the morning we left, not bothering with breakfast. What a rip off!!!!

“General fine but smells a bit off putting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2010

Was looking for cheap b&b in Guildford this does fit the bill. Though the acomadation is generally clean but smell strongly of curry so don't stay there if this would bother you. The food was fine but basic not big on choices. It is a ok place to stay but there are better places to stay in Guildford for simliar money.

“Far from a good experience.......”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2009

My parents attended a wedding recently in Guildford, this B&B is closeby to the reception venue and seemed to be an ideal choice. The rate they paid was £65.00 a night which is quite steep for a B&B in Guildford but they were happy to pay for it due to the proximity of the B&B to the reception.

When they called to booked the room they made a reservation for a double room but upon arrival were given a twin room. This isn't a huge deal except they were given Room 6 in the building which is located in the roof void. My mum is 5'4" at the most and she had problems walking around the room with the low ceilings.

When they arrived at the hotel they basically dropped their luggage off and headed straight to the wedding. Naturally they got back late in the night, first thing they noticed when they got back to the room was there wasn't any toilet paper in the bathroom!! Surely this is a basic necessity in a B&B or hotel, usually you'll replace the spare toilet paper as there should always be a spare in the bathroom, alas no.

When my Mum went to bed she accidentally pulled the sheet covering the mattress up as she thought it was the sheet between her and the quilt. Once again usually in a hotel there will be a sheet between you and a quilt!!! When she looked under the sheet the stains on the mattress pad were pretty grim, she really didn't want to sleep in the bed but had no choice at that time of night..... On top of all of this the beds were rock hard and neither got a good nights sleep.

When they woke up in the morning they went into the bathroom to use the shower but found the towels were rock hard from many many uses. At this point they wanted to check out pretty much immediately and went down at 9.05am. They asked if there was a possibility of getting a cup of tea but were told the kitchen closed at 9.00am.... You would think after charging someone £65.00 a night they may be more flexible than to flatly refuse someone a cup of tea 5 mins after the kitchen closed. Sounds a bit Basil Fawltyish!

At check out my Dad mentioned to the lady in charge that the room had no toilet paper, all she said was 'Sorry about that'. Not much use late at night when you need to use the toilet!!

From what my parents said we would have to agree with the assertion of 'infolondon's review below that 'The lady who runs the B&B has obviously lost her passion for running the place'. She really couldn't care less.

All in all for the price a very poor experience. They would certainly recommend you look at other options in Guildford before staying here, especially due to the ridiculous room rate.

“OK. But nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2008

I wanted cheap clean accommodation for a 1 night stay. This place seemed to serve the bill. Ok, at over £50 per room per night it wasn't that cheap, but still cheaper than most other Guildford options. Location is ok. About 10-15 minutes walk from rail station. Pub which serves food is a few minutes walk away. The lady who runs the B&B has obviously lost her passion for running the place. She seemed quite fed up and certainly the welcome could have been better. The room itself was small and as I was partly in the roof had to constantly watch to avoid hitting my head on the sloping wall/ceiling. The full English breakfast was a fair size and filling but nothing special.
All in all, I wouldn't rush back here, but if you need a place to stay within walking distance of the town centre, its certainly worth considering this place.

“Not all that it seems...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2008

First I feel I need to explain the title of this review. The website presentation is great but is very cleverly worded and put together and gives the impression of country cottage style atmosphere (flowers around the door etc) with a modern approach to facilities (light and airy dining room etc)
However, make no mistake, this is a working B+B primarily for workers or those wishing to get up and about early. We were told that breakfast would be served until 8.30 as the kitchen closes at 9.
When, on the 2nd morning, we arrived for breakfast at 8.35 we were greeted with "Oh my God, I forgot about you. I've just washed up". Not a great feeling to say the least.
Also, we weren't actually staying at the address on the website. Stoke House has accommodation situated in 3 different houses so we had to leave our room at 117 in order to get breakfast. Luckily it wasn't raining!
The breakfast - contrary to the web details the only cereal on offer was cornflakes, we weren't given the option of white or brown toast, they only had strawberry jam, and the fruit juice (orange only) was not chilled.
The dining room is now laid out as one big communal table which offers no privacy and feels more like a youth hostel.
Let me just be clear here. I have no problem with staying in places that offer this level of service. My gripe is that this B+B does not present itself as such.
The only positives I can think of was that the manageress was friendly (despite the breakfast greeting), it was cheap (£98 for a twin en-suite for 2 nights), and it was handy for Guildford (10 min walk to town).
I guess you get what you pay for but I think I'm done with experimenting with trying to find quality B+B's. I think I'll pay the extra and book into a Travelodge or Holiday Inn Express. Faceless and corporate but at least you know what you'll be getting.
Oh, one last thing - it was nice to have an en-suite but the shower didn't work. I wouldn't stay here again but you have to make up your own mind.
Hopefully this review has been helpful to you. Have a great time wherever you decide to stay.
